Historia
A reluctant ex-spy with demons of her own, Elinor finds herself facing down one of the most dangerous organized crime gangs in London, ultimately exposing corruption from Scotland Yard to the highest levels of government. The private, quiet “Miss White" as Elinor is known, lives in a village in rural Kent, England, and to her fellow villagers seems something of an enigma. Well she might, as Elinor occupies a "grace and favor" property, a rare privilege offered to faithful servants of the Crown for services to the nation.

Powerful, Poignant Story
Revisado: 06-05-23
What a well-told and moving story! I was engaged from start to finish. The characters were well defined and fascinating, really. Also the Audible version was beautifully narrated (hard to understand why a few reviewers have been critical). One of the best books I’ve read in a long time.

Entertaining, Educational, and Thoughtful
Revisado: 11-12-19
I loved this Audiobook and hope to find another book, equally good, along this vein. Mr. Sol presents 35 poems which were carefully assembled across a wide spectrum of themes and styles. The author then points out ways in which the selections use word choices, rhythms, and internal movement. Of course he analyzes what’s there, but he also uses the word ‘delight’ in explaining what he hears, and wishes for us to hear. This made the audiobook especially engaging. I liked his voice. The only reason I ranked performance as a “4” is that I found the female reader’s voice a bit less strong and clear than I would have liked. It’s so subjective, but there we have it. By the way, I found myself going back and listening to the poems again once I had heard the commentary. I suspect that this is what the author hoped. Enlightening and well as delightful. P.S. I just posted this review, and noticed it is listed with three stars. I can’t seem to correct this, but I give this book FIVE stars. I genuinely enjoyed.

Historia
In her late 20s, Cait Flanders found herself stuck in the consumerism cycle that grips so many of us: earn more, buy more, want more, rinse, repeat. Even after she worked her way out of nearly $30,000 of consumer debt, her old habits took hold again. When she realized that nothing she was doing or buying was making her happy - only keeping her from meeting her goals - she decided to set herself a challenge: she would not shop for an entire year. The Year of Less documents Cait's life for 12 months during which she bought only consumables.

Based on seven years of ground-breaking research and hundreds of interviews, I Thought It Was Just Me shines a long-overdue light on an important truth: Our imperfections are what connect us to each other and to our humanity. Our vulnerabilities are not weaknesses; they are powerful reminders to keep our hearts and minds open to the reality that we're all in this together.

More or Less a Repeat
Revisado: 03-24-18
I’ve only listened to two of Ms. Brown’s books, and they both seemed like breakthrough works, whereas this one seemed more like a rehash. Also, my preference is to hear the author ‘s own voice. The narrator of this book was fine—but I find the personal connection gets lost when someone else reads it. The written version of this book might be more valuable because I gather there are worksheets that accompanied the text. Not a huge deal for me, but I can’t recommend this particular audio book.

Historia
For decades we've been told that positive thinking is the key to a happy, rich life. "F*ck positivity," Mark Manson says. "Let's be honest, shit is f*cked, and we have to live with it." In his wildly popular Internet blog, Manson doesn't sugarcoat or equivocate. He tells it like it is - a dose of raw, refreshing, honest truth that is sorely lacking today. The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck is his antidote to the coddling, let's-all-feel-good mind-set that has infected modern society and spoiled a generation, rewarding them with gold medals just for showing up.

Not Particularly Insightful
Revisado: 01-18-18
The title promised (I thought, anyway) a deeper and more nuanced guide of living in the world without getting sucked into the mess. I listened on Audible and after about 90 minutes (sporadically listening) I had yet to hear anything with much depth. My two takeaways were that we individually aren’t all that “special”, and...ummm...I forget the other one. It’s not that the author is promoting anything wrong. It just wasn’t helpful. As I was deleting it off my device, I realized that I might have found Mr. Manson’s book more useful in my twenties when I was just waking up to reality, but it doesn’t hold much for someone who is already reflective. (At least the first hour and a half didn’t.)

Silly Evangelical/Religious
Revisado: 12-23-17
Sadly, I found almost nothing of value in this. I wanted to hang in there, hoping for the best, but in my mind if someone is going to put out a bunch of scripture and their own personal religious views, they ought to label that up front. I have the ability to look past some of this, but there never was anything of depth and value regarding a simple life. Maybe to live a religious life according to the author’s viewpoint, but few people are going to want to that.

Historia
Too many of us think we have to have it all together in order to live a meaningful life. Instead of feeling put together, we end up feeling inadequate, overwhelmed, and exhausted as we try to figure out how to do it all. Author, business owner, and mom to three Lara Casey has been there, too. In Cultivate, she offers this grace-filled advice: we can't do it all and do it well, but we can choose to cultivate what matters. Written as part encouragement anthem and part practical guide, Cultivate offers wisdom from God's Word alongside lessons Lara has learned in her own life—and in her garden.

A Bit of Empty Evangelicalism
Revisado: 12-15-17
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
If I had understood that this was a Bible-oriented piece of fluff, I would never paid good money for it. Once I realized her point-of-view, I still gave it about an hour of my time, thinking that there might be something interesting and valid. Finally, I understood that the growing irritation inside of me was doing the opposite of creating grace. Amazon recommended this to me as I searched for books on a minimalist life, decluttering, and mindfulness. This book promotes a genuinely damaging type of clutter, in my opinion. Grace, mindfulness, and intention cannot create any lasting improvement if you honestly think it has to come from outside.
What was most disappointing about Lara Casey’s story?
Grace can be elegant, mindful, and serene and promote well-being. This book seemed not to understand that.
What three words best describe Lara Casey’s performance?
Bland. Superficial. Evangelical.
What character would you cut from Cultivate?
This is a nonfiction piece.

Not Particularly Helpful; Certainly Not Motivating
Revisado: 12-13-17
This book reviews four different types of decluttering, and it came across as an outsiders view on everything. I found the book itself, and the narration, to be bland. I never sensed that narrator was engaged with what she was reading, but it also felt like the author her self was simply reporting. Some books inspire. This was not one of them.
