I always enjoy these pair (and their collaborators). Once again an easy to listen to story. I raised an eyebrow at a couple of things that I thought were out of date but negligible to the overall story. Worth the listen just for the pure pleasure of the communicative approach - not taking anything away from the topic, which has surprises and many things to learn and relearn. Four stars only as I thought it was a little short.

Well communicated. Easy to follow. Thought provoking. An important work in anyone who is serious about life and our understanding about it. You don’t have to believe what is presented, but if you don’t at least consider it, you’re blind to your own understanding.

That the mind is involved in switching the ~cebos on or off I think is indisputable. Whether it be a religious-like experience, a result of drug intervention or otherwise, or self induced change, such as through a more positive lifestyle or meditation, the evidence is hard to deny. My concern is when folks start to over extend science that is difficult to grasp even by the greatest minds and apply it to explain placebo in scientific gobbledygook. It does not mean it isn’t a reason but more caution should be made not to over reach the science. Also a few cases does not equate to norm.
Putting aside my gripe about the pseudoscience-spiritual claims, there is quite a lot of good advice and tips discussed. (I will examine the pdf in more detail.) I could use a bit of the ‘placebo’ influence at times and surely explains events had in the past.

This book was recommended by a student. Memorable advice for both me and the students who enroll in my courses.

Another great performance by (one and a bit of the) van Tulleken team. As mentioned within, the UPF journey is not meant as one of blame or accusations against individuals, but is meant to inform to help us make choices. But it will always be tough when UPF remains more affordable (and addictive) than better healthy eating choices. Must read and consider. Well read, too. (One gripe: sometimes the sound of the banter and Q&A between the two brothers drops out.)

Persuasion or manipulation?

This is an interesting book and deserves a second listen. Notwithstanding, the claim something is persuasion or manipulation or - name your mind game - will depend on who is trying to convince who of what. The examples provided are liberal left leaning but no value or behaviour is universally or historically consistent. I therefore did a quick search on one of the methods to discover, as suspected, counter strategies. I can understand why some of the strategies could be seen as manipulative. Having said that, I enjoyed much of the book as it supported the effort I have been doing for 20 years in my courses to get students to think and reflect on how they have come to understand the world the way they do - regardless of their political or value leanings. Added to additional reading list.

Well read. Not dated at all. Shame those in power positions who need to read this likely won’t, and if they do will believe it does not apply to them. We all can do sth.

History needs context and correlation is not causation

The work provides a needed conversation starter to a lot of the opinionated and inconsistent claims thrown around on all sides of the social justice debate. However this book also falls into historical cherry picking and claims hinting on causation for correlations to outline the weaknesses of other claims. The clear takeaways would be economics is not a science, statistics can tell any story, and history is often represented out of context. Notwithstanding, the claims presented within are deserving of equal discussion as there is much that holds and challenges cultural (mostly US) opinions.

Timely work supporting a discussion I have been asking students to have for many years asking similar questions but not from a “feminist” perspective but from a “what kind of future society do you want?”
Very interesting topics discussed and will be a reference material for my course. I only hope the author can update the book given the rapid developments since the book was published. Worth the read as we need to be constructive with our futures and not let them be created for us by default.

I was not disappointed by the book. Time to consider future scenarios from the data to alter the possibilities.
