Not terrible but amateurish

The first book is all 1 dimensional characters.

I'm halfway through the 2nd book and here's some examples of non-sense as spoiler free as possible

1) Dude says there's no law around here and there hasn't been for centuries, then takes lawman to a place with guards and laws that dude's been going to for his whole life

2) A person threatens lawman "take me to your base or else", but lawman was unconscious and shouldn't have any way to know how to get back to his base anyway.

Amateurish and unsatisfying

They keep telling you Lucy is brilliant but you never see it. Half her dialogue is "Sean didn't kill her." Other characters figure things out and she hysterically tries to shout them down. I got this as a buddy read with my mom, so I didn't read the other books. Not a good starting point. They don't try to introduce any characters. Nothing really pops if you didn't read the prior books.

Some example dialoged, (going off memory) "I'm hot and smart and pretty and I have big boobs and guys like big boobs". It sounded like it was written by a 4th grader. Redundant and simplistic.

More fun than I was expecting.

I wouldn't say the story is amazing but I love the world and characters. I'll be getting more in this series for sure.

I think 4 and 5 are a big step down from the first 3. It's still fun alpha bros in the post apocalypse fighting monsters but I didn't enjoy some of the stuff they set up.

A worthy follow up to the first. I'm reading them all back to back, so I forget what happens in book 1 vs book 2. Stakes are raised. Sets up for an excellent book 3.

Maybe too realistic

You don't get to know the main character. You know the adage "show don't tell"? This book is the opposite. The main character is passive and just goes to one character to the next to interview them. Possibly similar to real police work but a snooze nonetheless.

Starting to drag a bit

I feel like not enough happens to justify it's runtime. IV and V should've been combined into one tighter tale. Still fun but less fun than the 1-3.

The first 1.5 hours is just needless violence on a loop. After that you get a bit of story, but not much characterization. It feels like a series of not clever unrelated missions with unlikable characters.

Excellent way to juggle lots of plot threads

I love this series. Definitely feels like a culmination of a trilogy. Masterfully juggles so many versions of the same person. The climax seemed a bit too easy.

Super clever with lovable, realistic characters. A well defined magic system leads to situations of cleverness rather than capricious systems of magic that are endemic to the genre.
