This book was well done and heartfelt. You can feel the pride in his story. I will admit I could have done without the politics, but other than that, I was pleasantly surprised.

I loved this memoir. Just loved it! Tom Selleck shared his story with class, dignity, humility, sincerity and honesty... with just a touch of humor (even if he doesn't think he's funny). His journey is sprinkled with wonderful anecdotes and peppered with little surprises along the way. "You never know" who's going to pop into the narrative. :)

This book starts just before the beginning of his long career in Hollywood and ends just after Magnum's (He doesn't like the P. I. part of the title) final episode. There is a lovely epilogue about his family and Blue Bloods, but there's virtually nothing about the years in between his two successful CBS juggernauts. (not even about Jesse Stone or his stint on Friends). If I had any regrets about this book, it would be about those missing years...but maybe that's for another memoir. :D

If you're looking for salacious details about celebrities, co-stars, spouses, girlfriends, etc., you won't find them in this book. Mr. Selleck is intensely private and the intimate details of his life are unapologetically his alone... and I thought this was extremely classy. Extremely.

What he does share are the things that make Tom Selleck the icon that he is. And that's ok with me.

"Well done, Tommy!"

Broken on the Back Row - Brady Bunch-style

Sandy starts the book with a caveat that if you're looking for juicy or salacious details, you won't find them in this book. She's right. What I did find was a woman who chased happiness until she found it - at the expense of her marriage and ministry.

While she was truly repentant and did go through the steps to restoration, I get the sense that she's still trying to chase after happiness. ("I finally get to make my own choices and feel free and am truly in love for the first time in my life!") The way this book is written, it sounds like the Christian version of the Brady Bunch. Two families melded together in perfect harmony with smiles and laughter...and more than one bathroom. It's very sugary and sweet. At times, it bordered on silliness.

Granted, this book is over 20 years old, but I think if she had given a bit more perspective as to why she was so unhappy in her life "before the fall" (without disparaging details, of course), the redemption story would have resonated more and been so much sweeter and much more poignant and impactful.

Well, the title of this book was the first thing to spark my interest. Then the summary...and then - the book took flight. This was such a different book from anything I'd listened to lately and it was a welcome, lighthearted change. This was my first time "reading" Angela Bell's writing and it certainly won't be my last! In fact, I hope this becomes a series because I think there are more "misadventures" to be had with this motley crew. :)

First, if you like adventures set in Victorian England with a flair for quirky characters, steampunk surprises and an "Around the World in 80 Days" vibe, you will enjoy this novel. The book starts out a tad "angsty", but stick with it. It doesn't stay that way for too long. The characters are interesting, funny, unique and endearing. There are some "flights of fancy" that may seem implausible, but those make the book fun for the listener (and reader).

What I didn't expect were the unapologetic and beautiful messages of redemption, forgiveness and surrender only found through Christ. I knew this book was Christian fiction, but I didn't expect to be truly blessed by listening to this book! (It wasn't preachy or high-handed or holier-than-thou and there were no "perfect" Christ-followers. It was a story about broken, hurting people who come to a place where God is all they have left to turn to after they've tried everything in their own power. It was about believing in the Truth-giver instead of in the lies we've been told or keep telling ourselves.)

This was also my first time listening to Beverley A. Crick as a narrator. It took me a minute to adjust to her style, but she was the absolute perfect person to lend her talents to Ms. Bell's writing. She was wonderful.

Unlike any other Rhys Bowen book I've read

First, I want to comment about Barrie Kreinik's narration - it absolutely MAKES this audio book. It was stellar. Her voice acting prowess combined with her knack for accents...she just did a phenomenal job and helped make this book even more memorable.

Now, for the record, I've listened to and enjoyed every one of Rhys Bowen's stand-alone novels and this surpassed them all...so far (I've yet to listen to The Rose Arbor). WOW! This globetrotting, WWII story took so many twists and turns and was never, ever dull or predictable. Parts of the story were hard to listen to - I even shouted at the book more than once - and parts were heart-wrenching and frustrating and sorrowful. When all seemed hopeless, the ending made all the heartbreak worth it!

My only complaint: IT NEEDED AN EPILOGUE! I got so invested in the characters and their stories. I wanted to know "what happened next."

Well done, Mrs. Quinn-Harkin. Until the next time...

I have to say the change of narrators for Penelope and Izzy was a little jarring (but nothing like the narration mess that is "Loyally, Luke"), but it didn't detract from the story at all. There are some hero moments that had me cheering!

I will say Penelope's constant princess-y silliness could at bit childish and somewhat annoying, but since I've never been good at optimism, another reader might find her endearing. :D

I did think it wrapped up a little too neatly, but hey, that's why it's called a happy ending.

Pepper Basham wrote another wonderful book that's relatable in so many ways.

Ok, before I start my review I want to say that Christopher Ashman embodied Luke Edgewood beautifully. (He also did a great job with every OTHER character he narrated in this series. He's just fantastic!)

The narration was a giant distraction for me because I listened to all three books in a row. My issue with the narration for Loyally, Luke lies with the producers of this book. First, the main female character, Princess Eliana was voiced with an IRISH accent. Skymarians have a Scottish accent, so this was weird at best and a huge oversight on the part of the audiobook producers. (Every character this narrator voices was done with an Irish accent - even American characters....) Secondly, the voices for Penelope and Isobel were SO vastly different from the first two books and were basically all wrong. (The narrators should have switched characters. That might've helped.)

Again, Christopher Ashman was swoon-worthy as Luke. He has heart and humor and executes the character flawlessly -sometimes in a laugh-out-loud way. (In fact, he did a great job with Princess Eliana and the other character he voiced - like Brodie, Mathias, Anders, Pete, Gordon, Faye, Amara, etc.) If he'd narrated the entire book, it would have been less distracting and more enjoyable.,..

Now that my complaint is voiced, the actual plot and story were just so great. What a message of acceptance, redemption, second chances and new directions. It's a story that lets you know that God truly does honor the desires of your heart. This book is FUNNY and is full of heart and surprises and just joy and so much more. Pepper Basham truly knows how to create characters that seem so real and relatable and stories that have a spiritual message (without the preachy bits) told with a lightness that helps the Truth speak and sink in. (The Hallmarkian tropes were hysterical, too.)

This is the final book in the series and I loved them all. Oh how I will miss the Edgewoods!

My first epistolary novel - not my last

I honestly didn't realize the genre of this novel when I selected it. I chose "Authentically, Izzy" based on the author, Pepper Basham - she's a fantastic writer. A few chapters in, I realized most of the book was going to be a series of emails, letters and texts and truly, an audio version is the best way to enjoy this genre, IMO. It was thoroughly engaging!

The personal, inner conflict of the main character, Izzy was very relatable in many ways and the epistolary style was a unique way of seeing that struggle. I loved the plot - even if I did see the main conflict/climax coming - the resolution was not cookie-cutter or predictable. I really didn't want the story to be over (partly because I loved Brodie so much) and am glad to know we will have more interaction with them in the subsequent books. Each and every character experienced some personal growth and development beyond meet/cute/conflict/kiss. I loved this book.

I also appreciated how Pepper Basham wove her obvious love of all literature into the story. It's definitely not a casual interest and it makes the reader want to read a wider range of books as well. That's never a bad thing.

Narration: The female reader (Ferah Ahmet) did a good (not terrific, but good) job with the female characters (with the exception of Ellen Sutherland, who is supposed to be British. Ms. Ahmet portrayed her character as a Skymarian-Scottish.) but you could tell she was hiding an accent and struggled with pronunciations of basic American-English words. OH, and you don't actually say "Lawl" when reading "LOL..."

Now, Christopher Ashman is another story altogether. He's fantastic as the male narrator! He made me fall in love with Brodie Sutherland and laugh out loud at Luke Edgewood. He just made every character come to life. (I can't wait to hear him read "Loyally, Luke!")

Up next, "Positively, Penelope!"

This is a nice story that could easily be a tv movie. It did have some a light mystery that was fun to unfold, but other parts of the story were pretty predictable. (I could actually see certain Hallmark actors in my head as I listened to this...) Denise Hunter is a solid writer, though, and never disappoints if you're in the mood for a sweet romance.

The prequel to The British Are Coming series lays out the cast of characters for this royal romance. I am of the opinion that this could have been fleshed out a bit more and made into a more robust story. If you want a short, easy listen, this is a nice book for that.
