Simple & Fabulous!
Revisado: 01-20-25
I love research into how our brains work. Mel breaks the latest research down into simple, easily understandable terms. Relatable stories & life examples we’ve all experienced makes this a fast read. So many helpful tips no matter what stage of life you’re in. Wish I knew this years ago! It’s already changed how I speak to my grandchildren and I immediately see a faster turnaround in their behavior instead of just whining, “It’s not fair!” This is a book I will probably listen to at least once a year just to get the “Let Them” pep talk from Mel when I need it most. Humans of all ages would benefit from reading this instead of constantly scrolling social media. Move this one to the top of your “want to read” list.

I’m retired so I don’t set an alarm every day but I sure love to hit that snooze button 1 time. I often use that 10 minutes to stretch in bed or pestered by my 2 dogs to get up. I can see so many times to use the 5 second rule in my life. I can’t wait to give it a try. Thanks, Mel!

Historia
New York, 1960: For Benny Lament, music is his entire life. With his father’s deep ties to the mob, the Bronx piano man has learned that love and family can get you in trouble. So he keeps to himself, writing songs for other musicians, avoiding the spotlight…until the night his father brings him to see Esther Mine sing. Esther is a petite powerhouse with a gorgeous voice. And when Benny writes a hit song and performs it with her, their collaboration thrusts the duo onto the national stage…and stirs up old issues and new scrutiny that the mob--and Benny--would rather avoid.

Family is who you love, not necessarily blood lines.
Revisado: 01-09-25
I really enjoyed this story. 1960’s New York mob family, prejudice, the music industry, protests….what’s not to love? Who you choose to love and walk through life with is what truly matters.

I aged 10 years trying to get through this book!
Revisado: 11-02-24
This book was advertised as being a “stand alone” story. If I weren’t reading it for bookclub I never would have pushed myself to finish. I could not get into it or connect with these characters because I felt like I needed background on this fantasy world and the characters. I shouldn’t have to read 285 pages before I even begin to care or have any interest in the relationship between the main characters. I got through it but didn’t care then either. Ugh. What a waste of time.

Historia
Jane has high hopes her life is about to turn around. After years of living precariously, she, her painter husband, Lenny, and their two kids have landed a stint as house sitters in a friend’s luxurious home high in the hills above Los Angeles, a gig that coincides magically with Jane’s sabbatical. If she can just finish her latest novel, Nusu Nusu, the centuries-spanning epic Lenny refers to as her “mulatto War and Peace,” she’ll have tenure and some semblance of stability and success within her grasp. But things don’t work out quite as hoped.

Definitely NOT a comedy-dark or otherwise!
Revisado: 09-29-24
I kept waiting for a laugh. Then I merely hoped for a chuckle before the story ended. I have no idea why the synopsis describes “Colored Television” as a “dark comedy”. If it’s because many characters and most of the subject matter is about people of mixed races it seems pretty insulting to me. Not surprising that there are back stabbing people in Hollywood. I’m pretty sure they are in every profession and workplace around the globe. The only redeeming thing about this book is that the last chapter is well written and brings it to a close. I couldn’t wait for this book to end.
Read something else. There are many better books out there to enjoy in every genre.

Clove has gone to extremes to keep her past a secret. Thanks to her lies, she’s landed the life of her dreams, complete with a safe husband and two adoring children who will never know the terror that was routine in her own childhood. If her buried anxiety threatens to breach the surface, Clove (if that is really her name) focuses on finding the right supplement, the right gratitude meditation. But when she receives a letter from a women’s prison in California, her past comes screeching into the present, entangling her in a dangerous game with memory and the people she thought she had outrun.

A Tough One
Revisado: 09-20-24
Stories of domestic violence are hard for me to listen to. This one started slowly for me. Be aware this story could have multiple triggers for victims of abuse. A bit predictable as the story unfolds. Definitely not a light hearted read. I wanted to finish mostly to see if it finished as I thought it would, and it did. I’m sad that so many women often don’t have an option to safely leave these abusive relationships.

Historia
Lenny Marks is excellent at not having a life. She bikes home from work at exactly 4pm each day, buys the same groceries for the same meals every week, and owns thirty-six copies of The Hobbit (currently arranged by height). The closest thing she has to a friendship is playing Scrabble against an imaginary Monica Gellar while watching Friends reruns. And Lenny Marks is very, very good at not remembering what happened the day her mother and stepfather disappeared when she was still a child. The day a voice in the back of her mind started whispering, You did this.

Revisado: 09-08-24
What a fun adventure getting to know Lenny. I normally don’t like books that go back and forth in time but it works for this story. I enjoy quirky characters and how they learn to navigate the world. Overcoming abuse is always a triumph. I’d love to see a sequel written so that I can enjoy more time with Lenny. Highly recommend this one.

Historia
It’s a beautiful day in Newport, Rhode Island, when Phoebe Stone arrives at the grand Cornwall Inn wearing a green dress and gold heels, not a bag in sight, alone. She's immediately mistaken by everyone in the lobby for one of the wedding people, but she’s actually the only guest at the Cornwall who isn’t here for the big event. Phoebe is here because she’s dreamed of coming for years—she hoped to shuck oysters and take sunset sails with her husband, only now she’s here without him, at rock bottom, and determined to have one last decadent splurge on herself.
