Good Abridged Version
Revisado: 09-24-18
I do not usually leave reviews of audiobooks, but since this book only has one vague rating, I felt compelled to write a more descriptive review.
First, do know that this is abridged. This should be clear based on its length, but sometimes we all tend to overlook these things. Having read the actual novel, I can say that this a faithful and fun adaptation that is divided into relatively short chapters. While I assume this series was meant for children, I still enjoyed the book; it's a good review of the story and its plot.
I tend to listen to audiobooks multiple times, and I enjoy listening to shorter and abridged versions of things because (1) I'm busy, and (2) I am more of a story/plot person than a character one. If you are similar, you should enjoy this reasonably priced audiobook.
Lastly, the performance is consistent and professional, but I am not a huge fan of the narrator's voice. This is a personal preference, so be sure to take advantage of the free sample to judge for yourself.
Happy Listening!

Great story!

I LOVED the narrator! The story gets a little slow towards the end, and the characters are a bit eccentric, but this was a wonderfully entertaining tale!

Historia
Joe Biden is fresh out of the Obama White House and feeling adrift when his favorite railroad conductor dies in a suspicious accident. To unravel the mystery, "Amtrak Joe" re-teams with the only man he's ever fully trusted - Obama. Together they'll plumb the darkest corners of Delaware, traveling from cheap motels to biker bars and beyond, as they uncover the sinister forces advancing America's opioid epidemic. Hope Never Dies is essentially the first published work of Obama/Biden fan fiction - and a cathartic listen for anyone distressed by the current state of affairs.

Hilarious!
Revisado: 08-06-18
I was a bit skeptical about this book, but it was well worth the credit. While the actual mystery is not that great, the dialogue between Obama and Biden is pee-your-pants funny and worth the price of admission. The performance by Barrett is also great. I look forward to book 2!

Historia
Renée Ballard works the night shift in Hollywood, beginning many investigations but finishing none as each morning she turns her cases over to day shift detectives. A once up-and-coming detective, she's been given this beat as punishment after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor. But one night she catches two cases she doesn't want to part with: the brutal beating of a prostitute left for dead in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting.

Abridged - Great Story!
Revisado: 02-15-18
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I know most people wonder why I would choose to listen to an "abridged" version of the book, but I have always been more of a "plot" person rather than a "character" one. I found this story to be engaging, with plenty of twists and turns along the way (some of which were most uncomfortable). I could not really tell it was abridged until the end (it wrapped up fairly quickly). Still, I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a good mystery that focuses more on plot than characters (although there is plenty of character development in this version).
Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?
Yes! The plot was always moving forward as the protagonist worked to solve not one, but four cases. There were several twists and turns, some of which I never saw coming. I definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys procedurals and mysteries - Connelly knows his stuff!
What does Katherine Moennig bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I read several reviews that criticized Moennig's narration, but I found it to be just fine. There is one scene in which two characters are speaking on the phone, and I was lost for a moment in that conversation. Other than that, her lack of using different voices for different characters was not a problem for me; I thoroughly enjoyed her performance. That said, narration is all about personal taste, so use the 5 minute sample as a way to test whether this narrator will work for you. Since I am male, and the main protagonist is female, Moennig's narration helped me better relate to the character than if I had simply read it myself.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I probably could, but a book like this is better enjoyed in several settings. This enables you to think about situations, conversations, and clues between listens; this will then help you to enjoy the book all the more. Bottom line, it would work either way.
Any additional comments?
I have read (not listened, but read) several Connelly novels in the past (all Bosch titles), and I have to say this really stacked up well with those readings; I am always impressed with how authentic or real Connelly's books feel (even though I have no experience in this world at all). Basically, I loved this new character and hope there are more books forthcoming.

The room was on the fourth floor, and the door was locked - with the key on the inside. The windows were closed and fastened - on the inside. The chimney was too narrow for a cat to get through. So how did the murderer escape? And whose were the two angry voices heard by the neighbours as they ran up the stairs? Nobody in Paris could find any answers to this mystery.Except Auguste Dupin, who could see further and think more clearly than other people.

Good Adaptation
Revisado: 09-11-17
Although others have stated this item was listed as "unabridged," I did not have this issue; I was looking for an abridged version. Having read the original story and one other adaptation, I felt this abridged version was fairly faithful to Poe's story. The main characteristic that was changed was the language; the language was simplified and modernized, which I welcomed in an audiobook.
As long as you know that you are purchasing an abridged version of the story delivered in simplified language, you should enjoy this classic story.
