Everything about the description of this book made me want to read it.

But then, within the first 5 minutes of listening, a female character is described by her attractive bosom and the cold heart that lies beneath it. That was all I needed to know to quit my listen. There are plenty of better, derivative works out there in this genre, so I can safely skip the antique misogynistic scifi. Thanks but no thanks. Will be getting the credit back.

TBOA felt formulaic. Character driven, which I like, takes place somewhere it's not currently safe to travel to, intelligent but fallible narrator. Not sure why it bothered me but the whole beekeeping profession seemed like an artifact to use as a thread to tie the book together. Could have been anything. The watchmaker of Aleppo. The chimneysweep of Aleppo. I didn't learn much about bees (and isn't that one of the reasons we read books, to eat the fruit of the author's research down a technical or cultural rabbithole?). The pacing was regimented. There was a personal conflict, it was resolved. Eh. Felt like a robot wrote it. Missed the human touch.

However, I enjoyed the narration very much. The last book I enjoyed listening to this much was the Book Thief a few years ago. I"ll be checking out more by this narrator!

Felt like Simak's Way Station for comparison. Centered around one lonely character and his relationship with alien species.

There wasn't a lot of conflict and what there was felt artificial. Still giving it 5 stars because the world building made up for it.

Satisfying ending. In fact, this is my favorite read this year.

Always love a Shusterman story. They stick with you. It's YA fiction but it doesn't shy away from being real and gritty. People die! I think about water differently now.

I love Julia Whelan! I was looking for more books she narrated when I came across My Year of Rest and Relaxation.

I'm not sure why I stuck with it until the end, but it was pretty terrible. My worst listen in years. It's about a self destructive woman fixated on her own ennui. drugs, drugs more drugs. all downers. she should be dead. she isn't. the end.

I couldn't listen to this because there was a dead baby in the beginning. I'm trying to get pregnant and it's just not the right time for me to hear this.

I only listened to 5-10 minutes of this book. The accents were purposely overdone, I get it, for humor, but it just felt like listening in to some B- high school students on marijuana for the first time. Probably entertaining to themselves, but not to a third party. I felt like I wasn't in on the joke.

Gave the overall/story a 3 star mark, which is my way of saying I can't rate it, and don't want to skew based on my dislike of the delivery.

Good escape with an underdog. Very entertaining read. I usually like a larger "world building" type of story, but the confines of this novel worked.

Slight nitpick in that the conflict between two of the main characters felt forced. Forced as in unmotivated, or motivated at a 2 dimensional level.

I connected with the main character and one of her friends. I am hoping to read more about that relationship. That friend has departed, but in a way that sounds like they'll be back for more adventuring.

Overall the overarching story is too war driven. We are telescoped down through a series of mini skirmishes, slightly complicated intrigue, toward a "final battle" type of ending. I'm not a reader who cares about war, bravery, winning, etc. It's unfortunate for me that I can't have the characters without this storyarch. I'll probably try the third book.
