Historia
Over the course of the last four years, the American public looked on as the former president faced a series of daunting obstacles to return to the White House. The lingering cloud of January 6, a shadow effort within the Republican establishment to defeat him in the primary, multiple indictments, assassination attempts, and an 11th hour change of his opponent all threatened to derail his return to power at any moment.

Typical liberal booger eater fodder like the author was the fly on the wall at ALL the anecdotal conversations behind the scenes as well as still alluding to many anti-Trump hoaxes as "facts."

Historia
In Great Society, Shlaes offers a powerful companion to her legendary history of the 1930s, The Forgotten Man, and shows that in fact there was scant difference between two presidents we consider opposites: Johnson and Nixon. Just as technocratic military planning by "the Best and the Brightest" made failure in Vietnam inevitable, so planning by a team of the domestic best and brightest guaranteed fiasco at home. At once history and biography, Great Society sketches moving portraits of the characters in this transformative period.

Another home run
Revisado: 07-13-20
Shlaes crushed it in The Forgotten Man and destroys it in Great Society.
Nothing better than a history time based on *reporting facts* and not *creating a narrative* based on the facts.
Has all the details from multiple sources and quotes without the au courant media-style dog and monkey rodeo which characterizes modern "history" books.
Shlaes does not pontificate or spin doctor the *facts*. The reader/listener gets the info and gets to make any decision without the author inserting herself into the timeline.
She profiles presidents without the hagiography associated with an agenda. You get it all the cupcakes and unicorns of triumph with the herpes of failure based on the record.
Àll the presidents presented begin as all politicians based on their altruism but then you get the dark sides of the haughty patrician Kennedy, the knuckle-draggging schoolyard bully LBJ and the insecure backstabber Nixon.

Historia
William Halsey was the most famous naval officer of World War II. His fearlessness in carrier raids against Japan, his steely resolve at Guadalcanal, and his impulsive blunder at the Battle of Leyte Gulf made him the "Patton of the Pacific" and solidified his reputation as a decisive, aggressive fighter prone to impetuous errors of judgment in the heat of battle.

Finally a fair assessment
Revisado: 06-28-20
I appreciate a great recapitulation of an imperfect hero (aren't they all?) and his enormous contribution to the US Navy legacy.
My only critique of the book was the narrator's mispronunciations of Japanese surnames and places. I'm a former Navy linguist who lived in Japan for many years. My educational prissiness was jarred but it didn't interfere with being captivated by this book.
Still a grand slam.

Historia
For the past 30 years, David Mamet has been a controversial and defining force in theater and film, championing the most cherished liberal values along the way. In some of the great movies and plays of our time, his characters have explored the ethics of the business world, embodied the struggles of the oppressed, and faced the flaws of the capitalist system. But in recent years Mamet has had a change of heart.

It's Mamet ergo BRILLIANT!!!
Revisado: 01-13-20
An intellectual house party indictment of Leftist psychosis. Of course anyone who reads Hayek, Sowell and Steele must obviously be a racist homophobe as per doctrinaire social progressivism.
Mamet's use of Latin also defines him as a sychophant of the evil patriarchy.

Story great! Performance sucks balls!
Revisado: 01-08-20
Love Cornwell's body of work but having it read by a winsome Brit who reads like he's reciting a 1950s cookbook makes this a total bore.
The dude lurches between character voices while sometimes using the same voice for DIFFERENT characters or sometimes as a generic voice to express different emotional states!
Ex: Uses "old man" scratchy voice to: sound like a generic old man, one of the *several* older main tribal characters, the younger villain or the younger hero's frustration...sometimes all IN THE SAME PARAGRAPH!
Most accurate description? The alleged narrator sounds like a constipated buffoon in search of a butter knife to get himself relief

Historia
Beyond Shangri-La chronicles relations between the Tibetans and the United States since 1908, when a Dalai Lama first met with U.S. representatives. What was initially a distant alliance became more intimate and entangled in the late 1950s, when the Tibetan people launched an armed resistance movement against the Chinese occupiers. The Tibetans fought to oust the Chinese and to maintain the presence of the current Dalai Lama and his direction of their country.

The dude reading this GREAT BOOK needs to know the function of commas and periods. Reads entire paragraphs and pages like one loooong sentence. Even slowing down the listening speed on the app doesn't help.
Takes great gulps of air throughout prose while tearing through the script with all the emotional intensity of reading the back of a tampon package to 10-year-old boys.

Historia
In the 1950s, a young Indianapolis minister named Jim Jones preached a curious blend of the gospel and Marxism. His congregation was racially mixed, and he was a leader in the early civil rights movement. Eventually, Jones moved his church, Peoples Temple, to northern California, where he got involved in electoral politics and became a prominent Bay Area leader. But underneath the surface lurked a terrible darkness.

Comprehensive incisive decisive of a another religion which makes you want to be an atheist. Fine, Hubbard was a crackpot dealing with his own demons and wrote incessantly to process his damage for others. But the current crop Operating Thetans...these are some creepy people.
I'm from LA and had my first brush with Scientologists in the late 70s. Oh my how dysfunctional we have grown over the years.
