Historia
Does George Washington still matter? Best-selling author Nathaniel Philbrick argues for Washington’s unique contribution to the forging of America by retracing his journey as a new president through all 13 former colonies, which were now an unsure nation. Travels with George marks a new first-person voice for Philbrick, weaving history and personal reflection into a single narrative.

I had read the reviews. I didn’t realize how long the personal tidbits would be. The parts about the history of the towns and George Washington were interesting but it was more about the author’s personal life

Historia
The Brothers York is the story of three remarkable brothers, two of whom were crowned kings of England and the other an heir presumptive, whose antagonism was fueled by the mistrust and vendettas of the age that brought their family to power. The house of York should have been the dynasty that the Tudors became. Its tragedy was that it devoured itself.

Now I understand why Richard III was reviled
Revisado: 05-18-23
I’ve been confused by all the kings named Edward and Henry. This has helped a lot. The author explains who the characters are and what their roles were in the events in England in the last half of the 15th century.

Historia
From one of Outside magazine's "Literary All-Stars" comes the thrilling true tale of the fastest boat ride ever, down the entire length of the Colorado River and through the Grand Canyon, during the legendary flood of 1983. In the spring of 1983, massive flooding along the length of the Colorado River confronted a team of engineers at the Glen Canyon Dam with an unprecedented emergency that may have resulted in the most catastrophic dam failure in history.

I should have believed the one star reviews
Revisado: 08-19-21
Booooring. Arrrgh. I had to listen long enough to write a review. Audible said I had not listened to enough of it to write a review. It’s not put you to sleep boring, it’s just shoot me boring. He uses so many words I forgot what he was talking about. (I think he forgot what he was talking about while he was looking up words in a thesaurus). Now I know the meaning of “word salad”.

Historia
With the country in the grip of the Black Death, brothers John and William fear that they will shortly die and suffer in the afterlife. But as the end draws near, they are given an unexpected choice: either to go home and spend their last six days in their familiar world, or to search for salvation across the forthcoming centuries - living each one of their remaining days 99 years after the last. John and William choose the future and find themselves in 1447, ignorant of almost everything going on. The year 1546 brings no more comfort, and 1645 challenges them further....

This is different
Revisado: 06-30-20
This is a very interesting story written by a historian. It is not religious. It makes you think. The concept is novel. If you could pick 5 days (but only one in each century) what would you choose? The plague (and war with France), the turmoil of Henry VIII’s reign, Charles I, George II, (are we still fighting France?), Queen Victoria and new technologies, and finally Hitler. It is sort of “a day in the life” of each century for a small town in England. It is not a history but there is historical information. I have listened to a lot of books on the history of England so I don’t know how much that influenced my appreciation of the story. I think someone who doesn’t know anything about English history would enjoy the story. “The story” could be set in another country and still be thought provoking

Historia
New York Times-best-selling author Ron Powers offers a searching, richly researched narrative of the social history of mental illness in America paired with the deeply personal story of his two sons' battles with schizophrenia. From the centuries of torture of "lunatiks" at Bedlam Asylum to the infamous eugenics era to the follies of the anti-psychiatry movement to the current landscape in which too many families struggle alone to manage afflicted love ones, Powers limns our fears and myths about mental illness and the fractured public policies that have resulted.

Waste of time
Revisado: 02-26-20
I only made it through the first couple of chapters. The book is about the author. He said he wanted to tell a story, but if he did I ran out of patience before he started. He used a lot of words and didn’t really say anything. He talked about legislation but did not say what it was.
The only problem I have found with audiobooks is you can’t scan through the boring parts. This book may get better but I don’t want to waste my time trying to find out. I think the topic is important and I would be interested to learn more about mental illness. Perhaps an editor would have helped

Historia
The Second World Wars examines how combat unfolded in the air, at sea, and on land to show how distinct conflicts among disparate combatants coalesced into one interconnected global war. Drawing on 3,000 years of military history, Victor Davis Hanson argues that despite its novel industrial barbarity, neither the war's origins nor its geography were unusual. Nor was its ultimate outcome surprising. The Axis powers were well prepared to win limited border conflicts, but once they blundered into global war, they had no hope of victory.

Everything you never thought to ask
Revisado: 10-29-19
This is not “another WWII book.” Hansen gives answers to questions I never thought of. An encyclopedia of WWII rather than a history.
I enjoyed the audible version, but the hard copy would be a required addition to a history library. I was hesitant about buying this since I have read so many books about the war, but this is nothing like any other book I have read or listened to.
Thank you Mr. Hansen

In the first of three essays included in this audiobook, Bill Bryson decides to move his wife and kids back to his homeland, the United States, after nearly two decades in Britain. But not before taking one last trip around Britain, a sort of valedictory tour of the green and kindly island that had so long been his home. The result is a hilarious social commentary.

What did the 5 star reviewers read?
Revisado: 03-26-19
This is so boring I couldn’t get through chapter 2. I kept hoping for something interesting, but there wasn’t anything there. I can’t believe I wasted a credit. I would rather read (listen) to junior high school essays. I have enjoyed a couple of other books by Bryson, so I don’t understand what happened.

A story of celebrity
Revisado: 03-06-19
Ms Williams gives a lot of details that help understand the way people lived in the 18th century and what was going on in England at the time America was beginning. Some people may think there’s too much detail, but it’s necessary to understand the times. People were just as fascinated by celebrities as they are today. There were no photographs but they used cartoons and paintings in the same way.
I bought this because I enjoyed Becoming Victoria and I was not disappointed.

Historia
In 1819, a girl was born to the fourth son of King George III. No one could have expected such an unassuming, overprotected girl to be an effective ruler - yet Queen Victoria would become one of the most powerful monarchs in history. Writing with novelistic flair and historical precision, Kate Williams reveals a vibrant woman in the prime of her life, while chronicling the byzantine machinations that continued even after the crown was placed on her head.

The back story
Revisado: 02-25-19
Some reviewers seemed to think this book should have been more about Victoria. I thought it was great that she gave us the information on what led up to her reign. No one is interested in the Georges, but you need to know what was happening in order to appreciate Victoria. I had thought she was not well educated or socialized. Now I see that she was well prepared to become queen in spite of (or because of) the way she was raised. Well done Ms Williams!

Revisado: 08-05-18
I've never read Jane Austin, although I have seen some of the movies. I really enjoyed this book. You really get an insight into her family's life and life in England at that time. It made me want to read one of her books.
Well done, Lucy!
