Historia
In 2014, Lacy Johnson was giving a reading from The Other Side, her “instant classic” (Kirkus Reviews) memoir of kidnapping and rape, when a woman asked her what she would like to happen to her rapist. This collection, a meditative extension of that answer, draws from philosophy, art, literature, mythology, anthropology, film, and other fields, as well as Johnson’s personal experience, to consider how our ideas about justice might be expanded beyond vengeance and retribution to include acts of compassion, patience, mercy, and grace.

Fascinating research presented beautifully

I’m completely fascinated by the science of endurance, and this book satisfied my curiosity from every angle. The studies and stories were extremely interesting, and the delivery was perfect for listeners outside the science world. I was sad to see it end.

Historia
"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.

Revisado: 05-18-16
Thank you Rebecca Traister for this book! As a 40-something divorced mother of five, I have struggled to find my identity outside of my traditional marriage. This book feels like a roadmap or at least guideposts to how to be a woman at this phase of my life! I am also sharing what I am learning with my two adult daughters. It's empowering to have a modern compendium of excellent women to turn to in 2016!

Tame but good
Revisado: 04-26-16
After listening to Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights, I found Agnes Grey tame by comparison. However, I enjoyed Anne Bronte's quiet and thoughtful story of a level-headed woman who makes her way in the world with poise and grace.

Revisado: 04-19-16
Juliet Stevenson perfectly sums up my feelings about Wuthering Heights at the end of her narration. I loved and romanticized the book as a young girl, but as an adult I see the tragic selfishness of the couple that leads to so much misery. Stevenson does s beautiful job as narrator.

Narrator's voice is very distracting.

Great content but the narrator used strange cartoonish voices when ready quotes. It was very distracting and took away from the power and authority of these amazing women.

Historia
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

A Vindication of the Rights of Woman

Historia
In A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, Mary Wollstonecraft tackles the wasted potential she sees in women, refusing to see them as inferior to men; she decries their limitations and suggests that they are worthy of an equal standard of education, and that they should be taught to develop their own reason, not simply how to gain a man. Written in 1792, at the height of the French Revolution, A Vindication is an eloquent and persuasive response to the prevailing attitudes of the time.

Revisado: 02-14-16
I am amazed at how relevant Wollstonecraft's work is today. I became aware of my own ignorance with regard to the subtle oppression still felt by women over 200 years after this book was written. I'm glad I took the time to study this work more closely.
