Kind of a weird story...
Revisado: 11-22-17
This was a weird story. I feel like it had great potential, but it took some strange turns and I'm not entirely sure what the message was supposed to be in the end. The daughter who has trained her whole life to take over the family business ends up not being "the one" who is meant to. And then she triggers a curse with her actions (doing something that was forbidden by great great grandma) which results in a whole lot of punishment raining down on her. The other daughter who never cared for the business and has been away from home for 15 years ends up taking over because she's the one who's actually meant to, and then there's a weird twist where suddenly it's time for everyone to find a partner and procreate? But don't worry, they all end up happy in the end!

It was a good, entertaining story.
Revisado: 07-16-16
Not a great story, but good. I finished it, and I liked it much better than The House in Quill Court. I am not crazy about the narrator, though she does an excellent job. It's just that the main character of the story is a young woman and it somehow bugs me that the narrator has an elderly voice. It doesn't bother me at all with the other characters, but It makes the protagonist seem a bit stuffy sometimes. My biggest beef with this story was that, try as I might, I could never completely bring myself to like the main character Susannah. Its partly her voice, but I liked her more in the beginning, and then she began to annoy me at times throughout the story. Still, it was not a bad listen and I think I will try more of Charlotte Bett's now.

This started out great....and then it got weird.
Revisado: 05-25-16
The writing is top quality and the story is interesting, the characters all had me emotionally involved, especially for the first half. but deeper into the story, things take a turn. I ended up not quite finishing the book, though I was very close to the end and had already figured out the ending when I stopped listening. I just didn't like or care about the main character anymore. It went from being a complex tale of Victorian lesbian romance gone wrong, to straight up hardcore erotica. almost too graphic for my taste, and let's just say, that's pretty graphic. It was such a change from how the first half of the story seemed, I felt like I was almost listening to a different book. the narrator was great. Still love the author. But not my favorite book.

you really can't go wrong with Paula Brackston, if you like this genre. she always keeps me engaged and interested till the end. I enjoy the strong female characters, and the narrator does a very good job.

Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Loved it to the end!
Revisado: 10-22-12
This is a unique tale, and I dare anyone not to get sucked into it immediately. I had it in my library for a long time and never listened to it...I don't know why. But once I finally gave it a chance I was hooked. The movie's got nothing on the book, as usual, although it does stay fairly true to the story. The narrators were both great, also, and I loved how he did different voices for the characters that really worked for them. Sometimes I don't like when narrators do character voices, but these were very good and fitting.

Educational and Interesting at the same time
Revisado: 10-22-12
I love historical fiction and although I realize this book is more of a biographical history of the Duchess of Devonshire than a fictional novel, it does not disappoint. It's a good "story" of her life, based on well researched facts and letters, but it doesn't bore one to death. In fact, I could hardly stop listening. That's either a testament to Georgiana's fascinating life and exploits, or the author's writing ability, or both. Either way, I highly recommend it.

A Good and somewhat gritty Historical Fiction!
Revisado: 10-22-12
I thought this book was great. It was different than what I expected, but it held my interest until the end. There were some rather strange elements...but nothing that I felt detracted from the story. It was neither too much nor too little of anything, but had just enough of everything that I like: it was descriptive, atmospheric, told a good story, and it had sex, violence, warfare, and interesting details of life in the renaissance.

I like the idea but...
Revisado: 10-04-11
This book sounded great, and had good reviews, but I am about halfway through and I have to say I am disappointed. The writing is great, the plot is very exciting, the characters are good, but it's just kind of boring. Everything is 'on the surface' in this book. The author does not really get very deep into things, I keep having this feeling like I WANT to know them all better but the story keeps a polite distance between the reader and the characters. Maybe it's the reader, I'm not sure, but I don't know if I'll continue this series as eagerly as I jumped into the Lady Julia Grey mystery books.
