Historia
One gorgeous autumn day, Harrison discovers that his wife—the sweet, funny, loving mother of their three daughters, a woman “who’s spent just about every Sunday of her life in a church”—is having an affair with a family friend. This revelation propels the hysterical, heartbreaking events in How to Stay Married, casting our narrator onto “the factory floor of hell,” where his wife was now in love with a man who “wears cargo shorts, on purpose.” What will he do? Kick her out?

Riveting
Revisado: 04-02-24
Riveting is a weird word for this book, but it is riveting. It’s the first word that came to mind. I listened and finished in two days flat. So gut-wrenchingly honest and just as hopeful. Start today and you’ll finish tomorrow. It’s worth your time.

Historia
American evangelical Christianity has lost its way. While the witness of the church before a watching world is diminished beyond recognition, congregations are torn apart over Donald Trump, Christian nationalism, racial injustice, sexual predation, disgraced leaders, and covered-up scandals. Left behind are millions of believers who counted on the church to be a place of belonging and hope. As greater and greater numbers of younger Americans bleed out from the church, even the most rooted evangelicals are wondering, “Can American Christianity survive?”

An Honest and Hopeful Book
Revisado: 11-28-23
Russell Moore is a stand-out character. He reminds me of Paul, as he could also say “follow me as I follow Christ.” He is aware of his shortcomings and freely admits them, while at the same time freely boasting in Christ and resting in his identity in Him. It gets so wearisome listening to Christians who seem to think they have a charge to take up some sort of fight for God. I think they’ve forgotten that God does not need their help; it is a twisted and worldly view of strength. What a joy to watch Russell stand firmly in His faith, girded with spiritual armor, loving his neighbors well. His speech is always kind and gracious, never belittling others or tearing them down. I would say he is meek, like our Savior: truly strong, steadfast, and self-controlled. I will read this book again and will commend it to others. It is honest and hopeful and important for our age.

Historia
Our greatest need is to be recognized—to be seen, loved, and embedded in rich relationships with those around us. But for the last century, we’ve displaced that need with the ease of technology. We’ve dreamed of mastery without relationship (what the premodern world called magic) and abundance without dependence (what Jesus called Mammon). Yet even before a pandemic disrupted that quest, we felt threatened and strangely out of place: lonely, anxious, bored amid endless options, oddly disconnected amid infinite connections.

Historia
How did a libertine who lacks even the most basic knowledge of the Christian faith win 81 percent of the white evangelical vote in 2016? And why have white evangelicals become a presidential reprobate's staunchest supporters? Jesus and John Wayne is a sweeping account of the last 75 years of white evangelicalism, showing how American evangelicals have worked for decades to replace the Jesus of the Gospels with an idol of rugged masculinity and Christian nationalism.

Great book
Revisado: 02-02-22
This book was so fantastic; I highly recommend that everyone read it, especially if you consider yourself an evangelical. But the narrator was probably one of the worst narrators I have ever heard on audible.

Historia
Gibbs has become a popular blogger and frequent speaker at education conferences. In this series of frank reflections on an unlikely career, Gibbs contemplates what it means to be a good teacher, how great books can change lives (and how one particular book, The Consolation of Philosophy by Boethius, changed his), and why effective education is primarily concerned with the acquisition of virtue....How to Be Unlucky presents a one-of-a-kind case for ancient ways of thinking about teaching in our contemporary world.

Beautiful!
Revisado: 11-26-19
This is a phenomenal read. It’s not a quick read by any stretch, so give yourself the time to really consider Gibbs’ words. Work through this slowly and, better yet, in conversation with a friend or two. I kept a commonplace book as I read, because there were so many quotes I wanted to remember. I highly recommend!

Historia
Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

Haunting and beautiful
Revisado: 11-08-19
This was a wonderful read. Hard to listen to at times because of the pain. As a mother of two, I will never understand the harsh and wreckless treatment of children. It truly boggles the mind. As a Christ follower, it pains me deeply to see abusers use His name to inflict pain and power over others. That is not from God. I am so glad Tara was willing to tell her story. What amazing triumph. And what a tender and brave soul she is.

Historia
Following Jane from her childhood as an orphan in Northern England through her experience as a governess at Thornfield Hall, Charlotte Brontë's Gothic classic is an early exploration of women's independence in the mid-19th century and the pervasive societal challenges women had to endure. At Thornfield, Jane meets the complex and mysterious Mr. Rochester, with whom she shares a complicated relationship that ultimately forces her to reconcile the conflicting passions of romantic love and religious piety.

Historia
Making conscientious choices about technology in our families is more than just using Internet filters and determining screen time limits for our children. It's about developing wisdom, character, and courage in the way we use digital media rather than accepting technology's promises of ease, instant gratification, and the world's knowledge at our fingertips. And it's definitely not just about the kids.

Historia
It’s easy to dream about the “perfect” church - a church that sings just the right songs set to just the right music before the pastor preaches just the right sermon to a room filled with just the right mix of people who happen to agree with you on just about everything. This audiobook is a call to embrace the uncomfortable aspects of Christian community, whether that means believing difficult truths, pursuing difficult holiness, or loving difficult people - all for the sake of the gospel, God’s glory, and our joy.

Lovely
Revisado: 12-15-18
This book is so lovely. I am challenged and encouraged in myriad ways to push through frustration and discomfort in church and with fellow believers. Brett has honored Christ with this work; Jesus calls us to die to ourselves and love one another. His writing will exhort you to do just that.
