Historia
Until about 1800, the West and the Islamic realm were like two adjacent, parallel universes, each assuming itself to be the center of the world while ignoring the other. As Europeans colonized the globe, the two world histories intersected and the Western narrative drove the other one under. The West hardly noticed, but the Islamic world found the encounter profoundly disrupting.

A pleasure to read
Revisado: 09-21-22
I rarely write reviews without having finished the book. This is my second read of Tamim Ansary, and I must say he is now one of my favorite authors and narrators. He truly has a way of taking you into the story, reminding that feeling of meeting a new friend in a cafe when visiting an unknown town that takes you into his captivating universe while also feeling like listening to a close relative telling me stories about the world in his voice ancient but bright with wisdom. The little touches of humor and playfulness are just perfect. He knows how to provide information in a way that is interconnected through threads of meaning, laced in a careful and intricate manner that allows you to see the tapestry woven of patterns that forms our history. I hope he can read this message and know that how we are deeply grateful for his work and dedication, I can only imagine all the amount of study that goes into writing such works of art and I hope he will keep blessing us with such masterpieces! In grace

Historia
This fresh perspective on crucial questions of history identifies the root metaphors that cultures have used to construct meaning in their world. It offers a glimpse into the minds of a vast range of different peoples: early hunter-gatherers and farmers, ancient Egyptians, traditional Chinese sages, the founders of Christianity, trailblazers of the Scientific Revolution, and those who constructed our modern consumer society.

A Masterpiece
Revisado: 07-24-22
I am incredibly grateful to have such intellectual masterpiece at the click of a finger. Many thanks to the author for the depth of this integrated wisdom, extracting patterns of meaning across thousands of years, to tell the our meta-story. From detailed, macro vision to a vast, universal understanding. This book brought many insights. I recommend to read the book; The Invention of Yesterday by Tamim Ansary if you enjoyed this read. Also, it reminded me a talk between Jonathan Pageau and Jordan Peterson. I wish the authors could eventually jump on a podcast with him, it would be incredible to witness the conversation that would come out of it.

Historia
Moving from the Paleolithic age to the present, Karen Armstrong details the great lengths to which humankind has gone in order to experience a sacred reality that it called by many names, such as God, Brahman, Nirvana, Allah, or Dao. Focusing especially on Christianity but including Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Chinese spiritualities, Armstrong examines the diminished impulse toward religion in our own time, when a significant number of people either want nothing to do with God or question the efficacy of faith. Why has God become unbelievable?

A Masterpiece

This book was an incredible journey throughout the history of humanity. I felt myself moved and carried through such intricate story-telling. The author's (mostly) neutral point of view allows us to truly feel the shape-shifting nature of ideas through time and understanding the development of belief. I learned so much listening to this book and I hope to find, or write a timeline accordingly so I can better internalize and develop my understanding. Thank you for writing such a masterpiece, I can only imagine the countless devoted hours of passionate research that went in the writing of this great work. 👏🏼
