Historia
In the 1970s, the ultimate trip for any backpacker was the storied “Hippie Trail” from Istanbul to Kathmandu. A 23-year old Rick Steves made the trek, and like a travel writer in training, he documented everything along the way: jumping off a moving train, making friends in Tehran, getting lost in Lahore, getting high for the first time in Herat, battling leeches in Pokhara, and much more. The experience ignited his love of travel and forever broadened his perspective on the world.

Historia
Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Drove around just to keep listening
Revisado: 10-06-23
This is the most riveting and gut wrenching book I've listened to or read in years. I drove around often just to finish chapters then did not want the book to end. Kingsolver's use of local language, local customs and the words and scenes associated with poverty and the drug use underworld are amazingly done to tell a story that while having you rooting for Demon has you realizing that too much of America lives like Demon and his family and friends. And Thurston's narration makes each word and each scene come to life just as though one was in Virginia's Appalachian Mountains participating in the drama alongside Demon. With these two together you truely see the world through a young impoverished boy fighting to make it in a culture stacked against him. Now I am left to wonder how Kingsolver knew such details of lives and language like this and if there will be a sequel. This audio book is a must listen to.

In his first book, broadcaster Ari Shapiro takes us around the globe to reveal the stories behind narratives that are sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking, but always poignant. He details his time traveling on Air Force One with President Obama, or following the path of Syrian refugees fleeing war, or learning from those fighting for social justice both at home and abroad.

An uncanny and incredible ability to recognize a story, listen to a story, and tell a story, including his own. This is not the type of book I normally read but I could not put it down. What a life and what a story teller.

Historia
There is no question that the United States faces dangerous threats from without; the greatest peril to the country, however, comes from within. In The Bill of Obligations, bestselling author Richard Haass argues that, to solve our climate of division and safeguard our democracy, the very idea of citizenship must be revised and expanded. The Bill of Rights is at the center of our Constitution, yet the most intractable conflicts often emerge from cases that, as former Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer pointed out, “are not about right versus wrong. They are about right versus right.”

Study civics and be cival. Be engaged
Revisado: 09-06-23
A good book with critical lessons and advice. Our behaviors and habits and those of the people we elect and how we/they accept or don't our obligations and norms will determine if America survives as the beacon of democracy. The current path we are on is not promising and requires real substantive change. The author makes several compelling points and offers actions that will redirect us to a better path.

Historia
Trauma is a fact of life. Veterans and their families deal with the painful aftermath of combat; one in five Americans has been molested; one in four grew up with alcoholics; one in three couples have engaged in physical violence. Dr. Bessel van der Kolk, one of the world’s foremost experts on trauma, has spent more than three decades working with survivors. In The Body Keeps the Score, he uses recent scientific advances to show how trauma literally reshapes both body and brain, compromising sufferers’ capacities for pleasure, engagement, self-control, and trust.

Historia
It was early evening and a new acquaintance had come to retrieve his daughter from a play date. Instead of driving up in a minivan, he arrived by water, tacking his sailboat smartly across a squiggly channel in the marsh, throwing a rope overboard, and zipping back home, his gleeful daughter riding in the wake. Who knew you could do such a thing? And how could you resist befriending a man such as that?

Revisado: 09-09-22
This is a wonderful book about growing up, about wonderful summers, and about beautiful friendships. I thank Mr McGrath for making me laugh, making me cry, and making me remember so many of my own fond childhood memories. Now I am inspired to live the rest of my summers, whatever ones God grants me, like I did when I was a carefree child and I'm also inspired to make sure that my children and grandchildren have very fond memories and experiences like I have had.

Historia
Stops Along the Way tells tales of 10 red-headed Catholic children raised on a farm in the ’60s, just 70 miles from our nation’s capital, yet so rural that they could be welcomed by both the KKK and a diminutive black man who would become part of the family; attending high school in the ’70s in another country on another continent alone with two brothers, free to explore mysterious castles and watch gripping bullfights while enrolled in a school built in the Middle Ages.

fun, eye ppening and reminiscent
Revisado: 05-26-22
this book takes the reader to many enjoyable places and shows the reader just how far we have moved away from our spirit of values and spirit of community. As I listened I could remember myself as a little boy having a wonderful experiences in our family and in the community. I could likewise remember my own time in the Iberian Peninsula. But real eye-opening is just how far American society has moved away from what made us great and made being in our families and our communities so enjoyable. I miss my childhood, I miss my country, and I miss my Catholic faith.

Historia
In both Europe and North America, populist movements have shattered existing party systems and thrown governments into turmoil. The embattled establishment claims that these populist insurgencies seek to overthrow liberal democracy. The truth is no less alarming but is more complex: Western democracies are being torn apart by a new class war. In this controversial and groundbreaking new analysis, Michael Lind, one of America’s leading thinkers, debunks the idea that the insurgencies are primarily the result of bigotry and reveals the real battle lines.

Will change your paradigm on politics in the econo
Revisado: 11-17-20
This is an excellent book to get a different take and create a different paradigm on what's wrong with our political parties, immigration and our economy and where it is headed in the US and Western Europe. As the author said if changes are not made we are on the path to becoming a high-tech banana republic like Brazil with wealthy managerial elite living in gated communities surrounded by angry working class people. This is not a book that's good for Republicans or good for Democrats as the author points out there are serious issues to be found in both parties and the problems they have created. The main part of the book that readers have to learn to deal with is that it's full of technical details and research that can get deep and boring at times.

Historia
New York Times reporter and best-selling author John Branch takes listeners to the magnificent red soil and rocky arroyos of southern Utah, where the Wright family of Smith Mesa have for generations raised cattle and world-champion saddle-bronc riders - some call them the most successful rodeo family in history. Filled with vivid scenes of cattle ranching and the high drama of rodeo, The Last Cowboys follows three generations of Wrights through the seasons as they are battered by drought, the falling price of beef, and rodeo's ever-present risks of serious injury.

A wonderful break during this crazy year
Revisado: 08-10-20
This wonderful book provided some relief from a world gone a bit crazy from the pandemic, riots, and too much politics. The book offers wonderful insights into the life of modern cowboys and how they work a ranch and perform in the rodeos. When you read this book you'll want to be a cowboy at least for a little while. Like every little boy this man always wanted to be a cowboy. Now after reading this book I really want to give it a try and know just how much work it would be.
