Not a bad story, but a very enjoyable listen
Revisado: 04-02-19
Enjoyable, funny space opera with a lot, a lot of technical space babble.
One note: I don't love R.C. Bray as a reader, despite having listened to him many times. He's a bit dry and monotone sounding. This R.C. Bray is funny, lively and really, really great.

Too .... milquetoast. Grover Gardner has the voice of 1950s promotional videos. I kept waiting for him to say: “and now your new dishwasher is ready for use.”

The reader is lovely, and the writer chooses her words so perfectly. A very kind book; it s balm for rough days, to steal a phrasing.

Ok.
Revisado: 12-17-18
Nice inclusive adventure with a good premise, that is somehow under-used.
The romance is a bit overdone, and Rhys and Aalocar’s seems more like a woman’s idea a gay relationship rather than how it actually happens. When gay men fight, it sounds a lot more like men fighting than a man and woman fighting.
But still a pretty good book. I’d recommend it, but not rave about it.

Historia
Three years after her fateful journeys through the forbidding mountains of Vystrana, Mrs. Camherst defies family and convention to embark on an expedition to the war-torn continent of Eriga, home of such exotic draconian species as the grass-dwelling snakes of the savannah, arboreal tree snakes, and, most elusive of all, the legendary swamp-wyrms of the tropics. The expedition is not an easy one.

I am enjoying these books
Revisado: 11-04-18
Well-paced adventure tale, smart, a bit sassy and humorous, progressive and interesting. And read by Kate Reading, who could make your phone bill sound fascinating and dramatic. Hopefully, in reality, it is not. Your phone bill, I mean.
As long as Marie keeps writing them, I'll keep buying them, and always look forward to my time with Lady Trent.

Historia
Jazz Bashara is a criminal. Well, sort of. Life on Artemis, the first and only city on the moon, is tough if you're not a rich tourist or an eccentric billionaire. So smuggling in the occasional harmless bit of contraband barely counts, right? Not when you've got debts to pay and your job as a porter barely covers the rent. Everything changes when Jazz sees the chance to commit the perfect crime, with a reward too lucrative to turn down.

Meh
Revisado: 11-30-17
It’s a fantastically uninteresting story. Ms. Dawson is fine, sort of passable, but adds very little. I love her on TV, but she’s not amazing here.
The story is also alright, but deeply forgettable. It’s not bad, but when the sounds stops, it’s over, no thinking about it afterwards. If you have lots of credits and money isn’t a care, buy it. If your credits are precious, move on.

Historia
Bob Johansson didn't believe in an afterlife, so waking up after being killed in a car accident was a shock. To add to the surprise, he is now a sentient computer and the controlling intelligence for a Von Neumann probe. Bob and his copies have been spreading out from Earth for 40 years now, looking for habitable planets. But that's the only part of the plan that's still in one piece.

Profoundly Sexist and Lacking in Story Structure
Revisado: 05-29-17
What would have made For We Are Many better?
The technobabble in this series is kind of engaging, and the reader is good, but these are bad books.
- the first one is a prologue; it lack build up, and has no climax, at all.
- the book is centrally about Bob and his digital clones. Most of the dialogue and action is about their interactions. There's nothing sexist about that. But all the replicants (even those not Bob) are all male. All the world leaders are male. Even the alien leaders are male. In the Bobiverse, women are cardboard cuts outs with implied wombs. It's weird.
- there is a strange unquestioning assumption of human tribalism and inter-tribal warfare that never gets questioned or addressed, even though it caused an extinction level event on Earth.
- One has the impression that Dennis Taylor thinks Bob is an evolved male, but he's really, really not.
Did Ray Porter do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Yes. All the main characters are Bob; they are impossible to differentiate, but other characters get their own voices.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from For We Are Many?
I would have sent it back and suggested that he revisit his single sex approach. And add a real mystery or challenge in the first book.
Any additional comments?
this book is good for white male techno-geek atheists that don't like women and don't demand a lot of thinking or self-awareness from their stories.

History happens all around you. And, occasionally, to you. I could have been a bomb-disposal expert, or a volunteer for the Mars mission, or a firefighter, something safe and sensible. But, no, I had to be an historian. It began well. A successful assignment to 17th century Cambridge to meet Isaac Newton, and another to witness the historic events at The Gates of Grief. So far so good.

With his talent for divining the future, Alex Verus should have foreseen his friends' reactions to the revelations about his previous life. Anne Walker no longer trusts him-and has also cut all ties with the mage community after getting kicked out of the apprentice program. As a favor to Luna, Alex's own apprentice and Anne's best friend, he checks in on her only to be told to leave her alone. Then Anne gets kidnapped.

More nuanced than Dresden
Revisado: 12-23-14
I like these. The books take a while to hit their speed, but the character development is good, the main protagonist is not a traditional hero - he doesn't set himself to die for the greater good; he's for the most part just trying to survive.

Historia
Alex Verus is part of a world hidden in plain sight, running a magic shop in London. And while Alex's own powers aren't as showy as some mages, he does have the advantage of foreseeing the possible future-allowing him to pull off operations that have a million-to-one-chance of success. But when Alex is approached by multiple factions to crack open a relic from a long-ago mage war, he knows that whatever's inside must be beyond powerful.

Listenable
Revisado: 11-30-14
Not bad, not great. Quite a few basic logic errors that kind of threw my appreciation of the story off (its a fantasy novel, the author can make up his own rules, but then he/she should then follow them). But good enough to give the second book a shot. Reader was decent and added to the experience.
