This book was everything it promised to be, and I learned a lot from it. However, I had to turn the volume way down because I felt like I was being shouted at. The narrator reads everything like he's a radio or TV announcer, overdramatizing every word and enunciating like it's breaking news. I found his narration style extremely distracting and off-putting. Someone quieter and more soft spoken would have been a much better choice.

Much as I love the subject matter of this book, this narrator is not professional and has a lot of problems with pronunciation. She mangles almost every major medical term, and she also can't pronounce the word "relevant". She keeps saying "revelant" instead. How did this ever get past your editors?

other examples:

DSM-V is pronounced "DSM five", not "DSM vee".

It's "micro-glia", not "mi-crog-lia". Pronouncing this term wrong distorts the entire meaning of it, because microglia are miniature glia.

there are no backslashes in web addresses, only forward slashes. This is a common mistake but editors should catch it.

There were other pronunciation mistakes, but I forget them at the moment.

It really seems like this narrator doesn't understand all of what she's reading, and didn't bother to do the research to find out what the terms she didn't understand actually mean or how they are pronounced. and the editors definitely didn't catch it. This audiobook needs to be recorded or at least corrected., if Audible cares at all about professionalism or scientific accuracy.

This upcoming holiday season, if you're looking for a heartwarming and hilarious tale of Christmas and zombies, allow me to suggest Christopher Moore's "The Stupidest Angel". It's now among my favorite of his books. You'll appreciate it more if you read "Island of the Sequined Love Nun" and "The Lust Lizard of Melancholy Cove" first, though, since it's more or less a direct sequel to both. (It features most of the characters from both books, later on.)

However, I do have a bone to pick with the narrator of the audiobook version. "Raziel" is not hard to pronounce: "RA-zee-el". Exactly how it looks.

The narrator not only mispronounces it and puts the emphasis on the wrong syllable, he also can't decide which wrong pronunciation he likes. He cycles between "ray-ZEEL", "ra-ZEEL", and "ra-ZHEEL".

As if this weren't bad enough for a professional voice actor, he also mispronounces the obviously Spanish-derived town name "San Junipero" as "San Yoo-NIPPER-o". As anyone who's ever had thirty seconds of Spanish will tell you, J makes a "h" sound. Never a "y" sound.

The worst part is he does a great job of acting out the characters and reading the story... But every time he thinks he can just invent whatever the hell pronunciation strikes his fancy, I want to reach through my stereo and strangle him. This pulls me right out of the narrative, and whoever directed the audiobook really should have caught it. Very unprofessional.

All that being said, I would definitely buy it again and I see myself listening to it again in the future. But it's best to know what you're getting into, especially if you're interested in language like I am.
