Historia
Funny and touching, Behind You Is the Sea brings us into the homes and lives of three main families—the Baladis, the Salamehs, and the Ammars—Palestinian immigrants who’ve all found a different welcome in America. Their various fates and struggles cause their community dynamic to sizzle and sometimes explode: The wealthy Ammar family employs young Maysoon Baladi, whose own family struggles financially, to clean up after their spoiled teenagers. Meanwhile, Marcus Salameh confronts his father in an effort to protect his younger sister for “dishonoring” their name.

The richness of the story and Marcus and his father
Revisado: 02-10-24
Did not like Marcus as a cop and felt this real sadness and empathy for his dad. The stories of all the parents and grandparents were nice. Hiba s grandparents were a real soft spot for me. Really easy listen

Historia
A daughter and mother: two women miles, years, and dreams apart. One defies traditions and expectations. The other conforms to them, even in a new land. Their emotional distance grows while the daughter, now a wife and mother herself, comes to better understand the woman she’s become and why, as she ruminates on inherited trauma, the need to forgive, and the lengths she’ll go to free herself from the past.

Made me think of my mom
Revisado: 02-09-24
I really loved seeing the empathy this woman has for her mother. To see her hurt and her pain too but still she has her heart open to her mother even tho it’s not easy. What a great healing experience.. good story.

Historia
Cyrus Shams is a young man grappling with an inheritance of violence and loss: his mother’s plane was shot down over the skies of the Persian Gulf in a senseless accident; and his father’s life in America was circumscribed by his work killing chickens at a factory farm in the Midwest.

Arian Moayed served with his voice. Really great read.
Revisado: 02-04-24
The characters were all very good. The story was really easy to get into and to follow. It made me more curious about what Iran was like during the time Cyrus’ mother and father and uncle lived prior to his being born. Really great novel I cannot wait for more.
Please someone hire Arian Moayed to read more books

Historia
On a hot day in Bethlehem, a 12-year-old Palestinian-American girl is yelled at by a group of men outside the Church of the Nativity. She has exposed her legs in a biblical city, an act they deem forbidden, and their judgement will echo on through her adolescence. When our narrator finally admits to her mother that she is queer, her mother's response only intensifies a sense of shame: "You exist too much," she tells her daughter. Told in vignettes that flash between the US and the Middle East, we trace her progress from blushing teen to sought-after DJ and aspiring writer.

The main characters past /intergenerational trauma

This was really well thought through. I felt her relationships with her mother, father, girlfriends , boyfriend s… that was so intense. Her obsessions and self destructive tendencies were so hurtful. Her mom was hurtful and yet her mom has her own problems… this is a really great book.

Historia
When Springville residents—at least the ones still alive—are questioned about what happened on prom night, they all have the same explanation . . . Maddy did it. An outcast at her small-town Georgia high school, Madison Washington has always been a teasing target for bullies. And she's dealt with it because she has more pressing problems to manage. Until the morning a surprise rainstorm reveals her most closely kept secret: Maddy is biracial. She has been passing for white her entire life at the behest of her fanatical white father, Thomas Washington.
