An inspiring story and an excellent performance

I probably would not have enjoyed this nearly as much if it were read by anyone other than Penn Jillette. The book was oddly entertaining for a weight-loss chronicle, and Penn adds his own flare to the experience. Laugh-out-loud moments abound, and the entire experience inspires me to follow in his oversized footsteps!

Great book, disappointing production.

My only complaint about the book was the random fanfare. I loved the story and the narrator, but the producer seems to have been at the comfort station when this got finalized - what's up with those trumpets every so often in random places?

Story is fine, narration is abysmal

The story here was acceptable - it moved along quickly and was engaging. But the narrator just bugged me. He sighed, breathed heavily, made mistakes, totally messed up sarcasm, and really took away from the story. It felt like someone forgot to edit it. I was really disappointed by this.

An engaging story abominably narrated

I found the story itself to be interesting and engaging. The literary style felt like it was written by a fifth-grader, but I was willing to overlook that. I found myself engaged the whole time. However, there is one MAJOR problem -- the narration. Eric Summerer was just fine and had only a minor part, but my real gripe was with Erin Moon. 90% of her reading was fine, but she has a thing for pronouncing some words with a fake French accent that drove me up the wall. Seriously, why does she speak in an American accent for 99 words, then say one faux French word? It was like running over an animal on the freeway - it pulled me out of the story and grated on me to no end. Without that, the book would be a whole star higher in my rating, but as it stands, all I will remember about the book a year from now is Erin's grating narration.

Uninspired and very tortured

So far I have enjoyed these witch books, but this one was unfortunately not very good. The plot was extremely tortured and the story was not compelling at all. All conflict was heavily manufactured. The time travel element forced the story to revisit parts of The Witch's Daughter, but did so in a very forced and false way that was as unbelievable as it was unimpressive. As sequels go, this is a bad one.

Also, the reader did a bad job this time. I have enjoyed her other narrations, but in this book it was often very difficult to tell who was narrating (Elizabeth or Tegan) because she did not do distinctive voices. The point of view often shifts but it isn't until later that you realize that the point-of-view character has changed. I wish she had done more distinctive voices.

The book was interesting from its premise. The story was engaging and it wasn't boring at all. But when I was done with it I realized that absolutely nothing happened. It was all set up build up and then it was over. I hope the Amazon television show will be more engaging.

Deeply Disappointing Dexter

What disappointed you about Dexter Is Dead?

Most of the book was fantastic. However, the last hour or so, the ending, was so anticlimactic that it almost made me wish we had left Dexter's fate uncertain in Final Cut. The ending is undeserving; this is not how Dexter should have gone down. It felt like Mr. Lindsay got bored of the story and jettisoned it.

Would you ever listen to anything by Jeff Lindsay again?

Yes. I loved the Dexter books. I just think Mr. Lindsay owes his fans a different ending.

Which character – as performed by Jeff Lindsay – was your favorite?

Dexter

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

Yes. Lindsay's wit and charm are there right up until the start of the final chapter.

Any additional comments?

We want out hero to go down swinging; violently vindicated...not from an almost unknown hand. We need a different ending, please.

Annoying narrator + unfortunate abridgment - AVOID

What disappointed you about High Five?

This is bad...just from the start it's bad. First of all, it's an abridgment, which is really an abomonation. The book wasn't that long to begin with, so I don't know why someone felt the need to abridge it. And since Audible doesn't seem to carry the full version, this is what I was stuck with. But the performance is just horrible. Rhe narrator has a grating accent -- it is just as annoying as possible to listen to her. But worst than that, she is lifeless and emotionless. I had grown used to C.J. Critt and her whimsical interpretations of the characters. I am looking forward to Lorelei King as well. But this woman is just bad. I will never listen to another book that she reads. A computer voice would have been better!

Would you be willing to try another book from Janet Evanovich? Why or why not?

Absolutely! I have adored the Stephanie Plum series so far. I can see that better narrators are on the horizon, so this will be just a bad moment in a long-lived relationship with this author and this series.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Lifelessly. It was as exciting as watching the map on an airplane that shows you where you are. Her performance detracted from the story.

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Irritation and disappointment -- I couldn't get past the narrator's accent, grating voice, and lifeless performance.

Any additional comments?

I was looking forward to this book and the fact that Audible didn't carry the full version and used such a poor choice as a narrator really offended me. I'm tempted to ask for my money back.
