Enough “will they won’t they”
Revisado: 08-05-24
5 books in and honestly I’m tired of the “will they won’t they” sub-plot. This particular book was too long, had too many characters, and honestly was a difficult to stick with.

The New York Times best-selling author of Magpie Murders and Moriarty brilliantly reinvents the classic crime novel once again with this clever and inventive mystery starring a fictional version of the author himself as the Watson to a modern-day Holmes, investigating a case involving buried secrets, murder, and a trail of bloody clues.

Suffered through this til the end
Revisado: 01-03-24
I can’t say how much I disliked this book. There were entire sections that droned on for 15-30 min that were basically just various celebrity resumes, or insider information on the entertainment industry with regard to screenwriting, or full on book reviews of other works - none of which furthered either the plot or development of the characters, It was a slag to get through, I didn’t think it would ever end, but when it finally did - unsurprisingly it was disappointing.

When Fig Coxbury buys a house on West Barrett Street, it's not because she likes the neighborhood, or even because she likes the house. It's because everything she desires is next door: the husband, the child, and the life that belongs to someone else.

Had no idea erotica could be this boring
Revisado: 10-17-22
This was a slog, it certainly wasn’t a thriller. It drug on, was a best crude erotica, at worst an absolute snooze fest. The wildly explicit sex scenes did absolutely nothing to progress either the plot or character development, and honestly were as difficult to suffer as the rest of the book. Do not recommend.

Lame is as nice as I can be.
Revisado: 03-30-21
Maybe this author was riding on the tails of the success of 50 Shades, I don’t know. But the graphic sexual encounters did nothing to further either character development or the plot so I have to wonder why an otherwise 2nd rate PG story would include them. The book itself was clunky and ham fisted in its attempt to be clever, the “twist” at the end was evident miles away, and the narrator can best be described as droning. Don’t waste your money, and if it’s free, don’t waste your time.

Pete Banning was Clanton's favorite son, a returning war hero, the patriarch of a prominent family, a farmer, a father, a neighbor, and a faithful member of the Methodist church. Then one cool October morning in 1946, he rose early, drove into town, walked into the church, and calmly shot and killed the Reverend Dexter Bell.

Not what I expected
Revisado: 09-12-19
About half this book is an excruciatingly detailed account of a WWII prison camp and has literally nothing whatsoever to do with the actual plot, subsequently, the actual plot - namely why did he shoot the pastor, and why is his wife in an asylum - suffers. Additionally, the ending and supposed reasons given for the above questions are hollow, unbelievable, and frankly, grossly misogynistic. I was completely disappointed and regret wasting a credit.

Historia
When Marshall McEwan left his hometown at age 18, he vowed never to return. The trauma that drove him away ultimately spurred him to become one of the most successful journalists in Washington DC. But just as the political chaos in the nation’s capital lifts him to new heights, Marshall is forced to return home in spite of his boyhood vow. His father is dying, his mother is struggling to keep the family newspaper from failing, and the town is in the midst of an economic rebirth that might be built upon crimes that reach into the state capitol - and perhaps even to Washington.

Too much
Revisado: 03-27-19
The story could have been told effectively in about half the time - there was way too much redundancy and repetition, for example in description of the main character’s relationship with his father and overall state of mind. I get it man, your father blamed you, you blame yourself and you blame him for blaming you, you’re unhappy and have poor decision making skills - can we return to the actual plot now? Also, (and seriously - I’m no prude) there is WAY too much gratuitous and graphic sex. I mean, how did describing the sex scene wherein Jet turns her back and pulls apart her butt-cheeks, further either her character development OR the story?! Also another example of unnecessary repetition, as this scene was described on 2 separate occasions in the book, for no other reason that I could discern other than the author himself finds it wildly erotic.
In the end, the overall plot was just okay, every single main character was a POS, the pacing was awful and Scott Brick was, well Scott Brick - reliable if a bit over dramatic.

Struggle to get through
Revisado: 04-28-18
I like Harlan Coben a lot, I also really like Luke Daniels’ reading. But - I could not stand Angela Dawe. Her nasally voice, the weird and annoying lilt in her voice putting a strong tonal emphasis on and drawing out the last word in every sentence. So if the sentence ended with the word “her,” Dawe will draw it out giving it 2 syllables - “her-er.” It was torturous getting through this book because of her reading. I do not recommend.

Don't understand the negative reviews...
Revisado: 08-07-16
While I wouldn't call this literature, it was a really well written story - nicely paced, characters were completely sussed out, plot was well formed and thoroughly enjoyable. If you're into the genre, then I wholly recommend this book! I have no idea what the nay-sayers are complaining about!

Believe the comments about terrible narration
Revisado: 04-19-16
I could barely make it through this book not just because of the seriously terrible plot (A person who eats hummus doesn't eat meat, and a person who eats meat doesn't eat hummus? Really?! A model can't be Catholic, and her parents get brownie points for not hating black people. Many many more examples exist for why this book flat out sucks.) but the narrator is one of the worst I've ever heard. I think she'd be okay at reading children's picture books - she's so over the top ridiculous in reading dialog, she turns the already tenuously believable characters into ear-splitting caricatures. Ugh, it was an effort to not give up though I'm kicking myself now for sticking it out, the person who you think did it, did it. I think it was supposed to be a twist, but so poorly executed as to be laughable. Save yourself and your credit! Don't do it!

Soooo boring!
Revisado: 07-21-15
The narrator is completely over dramatic, drawing out the end of every sentence giving it the feeling of a b-movie horror show, and this despite that this book contains absolutely zero thrills. Heck, it barely boasts a plot! I kept thinking there MUST be a point to all this, but as the hours continued to whittle down I realized that in face nothing is going to happen. So boring. So disappointing.
