I appreciated everything about this story. I was struck most by the assumption that the enslaved were “dumb” but they knew the whites were dumber. The private language was deeper and articulate. The white slavers expected the language of the enslaved to be that of simpletons.
America has never been “the shining city on a hill”. That’s just a white myth!

The racism of us Americans was disgusting to me. The Black Women who served our country represent the best of America. The slow path thru thick and thin that slowly developed into a strong friendship and later a bond that I believe will last a lifetime was deeply moving to me personally.
I both read and listened to this novel on Audible. The presenter was excellent and had a repertoire of voices that enhanced the experience of this book. I have to believe the speaker is a trained actor. She used different voices for each of the female and male characters. Superbly done.
Thank you.

Well written by the two authors and an exploration of two peoples relationship and the intense political issues and racial issues they had to deal with. We have always been a racist country and I see the parallels of the 1930’s and 1940’s ant the present day America.
There is a behind the scenes look at the Franklin Roosevelt presidency and his reluctance to deal with racism head on. We fought a war against fascism and authoritarianism in Europe and Asia and then mostly a blind eye to fascism and racism jeered at home. Very thought provoking book.

I had both the Audible and a library book version. As an aside, I had trouble keeping all of what seemed hundreds of names of temporary characters. It was impossible with Audible but the paperback version from the library made the book easier to follow.

This book is a data driven discussion on the state of religion in our United States. I am requesting my local library to get this paper back version of this book. There are descriptions of graphs and charts that I need to see visually. I may purchase my own copy if I need it for a book club discussion.

The last chapter ends on a positive note of service to our fellow people of this country. I was able to listen while gardening and doing some tractor work on my property. (I’m retired from my medical practice after 44 years)

The author is a pastor and a political science professor at his local university. WOW! What a perfect combination for the times we are in.

Thank you to the professor for writing this book and to Audible for making this information available to a wide audience.

I never knew the John Brown history and the parallel relationship with Abraham Lincoln. The rambunctious wild man that believed he had a God given right to kill slave holders versus the thoughtful methodical thinker that became president of the United States.
Both had their own path to stop slavery. The writing was superb as was the audio presentation. ( I had both)

Great writing, especially the last few chapters where the Author weaves the book “Hester” into Nathaniel Hawthorne’s book titled: “The Scarlet Letter”. Masterfully written.

Excellent historical review of how the 13 colonies became the United States of America. Emphasis on the development and formation and agreement on the constitution of this country. The speaker was clear and the reading was expertly articulated.
Each paragraph was dense with information. I have both the audio and paperback versions of this book.

Story of a friendship between a Shakespeare Professor and 17 y/o murderer who enters a college level Shakespeare program at age 30 and becomes a changed man and discovered that he must breakout of his own self imposed prison.
The two learned from each other about overcoming life’s difficulties .
I highly recommend this book to people who work in the prison system as well as college professors and all others.
