I was hoping this would be a deep dive into BioShock, not BioShock Infinite. Most of the material is interesting but occasionally very dull. The worst part is that each chapter is written by a different author, so every single chapter discusses the plot twist, re-introduces characters, and feels very repetitive.

This book is fan service but completely ignores legitimate issues with the game. It only focuses on the masterpiece moments, over and over again. By the time you're half way through it, you've pretty much heard it all. Every other chapter is about a specific area of the game, which is interesting, but only good information if you really don't know anything about it... Very strange for the targeted audience. I had such high hopes for the book, but the good news is the final chapter about the characters and their lore was phenomenal.

This book had its moments of greatness but holy cow, other parts are insufferable. At times, one of the narrators seems to have been edited over his own pronunciation. As if he said a name correctly once, and then just copied and pasted it elsewhere. Of the 8 cultures covered, only 3 were really great (Egyptian, Norce, Japanese). Chinese and Indian felt borderline offensive at times, while Greek was bafflingly rushed. For example, many classic myths are omitted but for some reason the story of Hades and Persephone is told three times in a row. It reminded me of someone trying to increase their word count on an essay by rephrasing the same thing over and over again. Simply put, I don't recommend this because of how rare the highlights are compared to the slog.

I did not know what to really expect but this book blew me away. It was endearing and intense. At times the names and places are difficult to keep track of, but the important ones stick. At the conclusion of it, I think I found my new favorite book.

The biggest and most obvious issue with this book is it's not about the "Console Wars," it's more about "Sega is the underdog and Nintendo is the enemy." It seems more about Sega of America's CEO than anything else, and the point of view changes constantly, even mid chapter. Sudden shifts will happen such as starting at a cafe with two characters having a conversation and then the story will veer into their flashbacks for 20 minutes without ever getting back to the main characters presented. It feels sloppy at times and confusing because it's hard to know who is important and when something is a quick aside or a major plot point. I also can't help but be annoyed every time the narrator pronounces Mario as May-rio. It's a constant distraction, along with how many of the voices sound too similar. In a book littered with Japanese accented characters and nerds, it sometimes feels like he only has one voice for each stereotype and it comes across as lazy at times. I enjoyed it but it just wasn't what I was hoping for.

As someone who is interested in psychology and treatments in general but not specifically trauma, this book is more focused than I expected. This seems like it would be a great resource for someone who has suffered trauma and helping learning strategies for dealing with it. Unfortunately it just didn't resonate with me but it's definitely the right book for many, many others.

The author does a wonderful job of letting you see the case through his eyes, after setting the stage of who the victims are and who the alleged killers may be. It's certainly not his fault, but there are so many names and people involved that I was confused at least 25% of the time about who-did-what, which is only made worse by nicknames being used to describe some people. Again, no one's fault, but just be aware of that frustration. The final few hours also dragged with life updates on key players that was interesting but went on far too long in my opinion. Scott Brick is phenomenal as always and it's solely because of him that I even decided to try this one out. Overall, I'm very glad I did!

Best Leadership Book I've Ever Had

At first I wasn't sure if I was going to connect with this book because I'm pretty unfamiliar with the military and that entire ecosystem of leadership principles. I'm also not a huge fan of top-down management styles. However, this book was fantastic at shattering that perception and really makes you second-guess why certain organizations have not adapted with the times. Hearing it in the author's voice also adds an air of credibility to the entire narrative. As someone who works in human resources and teaches leadership courses, this will be at the top of my recommendation list for those who are wanting to grow.

This is the first audiobook I have ever had to slow down the play speed on. I listed at 80% because my goodness it can be hard to keep up with the narrator. The story is overall pretty good but the tineline is confusing in some parts. Unfortunately it feels like the main characters are just keeping tension between them for the sake of it, which ruins the immersion.

Stephen Fry is extremely entertaining in his reading and writing. It seems to miss a number of really noteworthy stories (Hercules, Jason, Odyssey, etc.), but those may be in his other works. Minor complaint overall!
