Extraordinary!
Revisado: 10-17-22
I don't read a lot of fantasy but was familiar with the author's work so trusted it would be well written and I was not disappointed. Compelling characters, an intriguing plot, and an interesting and unique magic system made this novel difficult to put down. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

The series keeps getting better
Revisado: 06-09-22
I've enjoyed all three books in this series, but think this third one might be the best. Kunsken continues to dazzle us with an imaginative, terrifying, amazing and hopeful distant future for humankind. I'm definitely looking forward to the next book in the series and have no doubt it will be worth the wait.

Historia
A towering genius who'd already solved the problem of death by making memory recording possible, Cassia leads a team of scientists and problem solvers to a station floating in the harsh winds of Saturn. Their mission: to grow interstellar ships using nanobots in the planet's material-rich environment. She called them "monsters" to help sell the project to a skeptical public. Little did she know how prophetic that name would become.

This is my favorite kind of science fiction. It packed an emotional punch, the "future" science was solid, good pacing and characterization. Highly recommended.

Historia
Brazilian investigator Rosalia Morais, and her husband, revered American spacer Nicolau Aames, are building a life together in Mars’s Maxwell City, the fastest-growing settlement on the planet. Good news: there are no natural predators. Bad news: there are humans. That means the crime rate is growing, too. To ensure public safety, Rosie’s appointed by the mayor as the Red Planet’s first chief of police.

A realistic mystery on a realistic Mars
Revisado: 02-08-21
Martin Shoemaker is a master at the hard science fiction mystery tale and this sequel to The Last Dance is no exception. I enjoyed seeing the red planet and Nick Aames through Rosalia's eyes, because she is one of Shoemakers most interesting characters. The tension builds slowly as clues, relationship cracks and conspiracies are all revealed through science and good old fashioned police work. He pulls everything together in the end for a satisfy read and a vision of a future Mars that isn't a utopia but most definitely a place I would like to live.

Historia
In space, mutiny means death - that’s why Inspector General Park Yerim is taking her investigation so seriously. The alleged mutineer is Captain Nicolau Aames, whose command of the massive Earth-Mars vessel Aldrin has come under fire. The vast System Initiative says he disobeyed orders, but his crew swears he’s in the right. En route to Mars, Park gathers testimony from the Aldrin’s diverse crew, painting a complex picture of Aames’s character: his heroism, his failures, even his personal passions.

I want to go!
Revisado: 11-27-19
The cycler ship Aldrin is populated by a crew so believable they seem like someone you know or would at least like to know. The interactions between these characters were powerful and complex, dragging me into the narrative quickly, so when we find they are all in trouble for supporting the actions of their mutinous captain I was immediately invested. And the scale of the issues and associated mysteries needed a space ship captain that was bigger than life and Nick Aames' persona fits the bill perfectly. Shoemaker's did his homework and that shows in this realistic and accurate portrayal of humanity's near future in space. It makes me want to go into space even more...yes even if I were commanded by Nick Aames.

Tirren, heir to the ruler of Thiery, has raised his half-Elven son in a land that hates and fears the Elves, but his son’s struggle for acceptance is only one source of Tirren’s pain. The other is his unfading desire for Yslaaran, the Elven woman who 18 years ago captured him in a spell, seduced him, and vanished. She returned only once more - to hand him his infant son.

I read mostly science fiction, so am very particular about those fantasy novels I decide to read, but was familiar with the author's work and gave this one a shot. I'm glad I did. It was an enjoyable investment of my time. I was engaged almost immediately with interesting and believable characters, then enthralled by a vividly painted fantasy world, that avoids the tired tropes associated with magic and elves. The smart and exiting plot is told from multiple POVs and unfolds beautifully to a logical and satisfying conclusion. Highly recommended.

Carey is the AI we all need.
Revisado: 04-22-19
I love well-thought-out stories about AIs and Martin L. Shoemaker's debut novel didn't disappoint. Telling a story filled with emotional impact is difficult enough and doing it in an effective and believable manner from the perspective of an artificial intelligence is nearly impossible, yet this tale does it extremely well. Shoemaker carefully and skillfully weaves his understanding of technology with a powerful empathy and love of family, to create an artificial intelligence like no other. A quiet and thought-provoking story that gives me hope we will all have a Carey in our future.

Historia
Belisarius is a quantum man, an engineered Homo quantus who fled the powerful insight of dangerously addictive quantum senses. He found a precarious balance as a con man, but when a client offers him untold wealth to move a squadron of warships across an enemy wormhole, he must embrace his birthright to even try. In fact, the job is so big that he'll need a crew built from all the new sub-branches of humanity. If he succeeds, he might trigger an interstellar war, but success might also point the way to the next step of Homo quantus evolution.

My kind of SF
Revisado: 12-07-18
Loved this book. One of the best I've read all year. The author created a very rich, dark and interesting future for humanity, and one filled with amazing characters. Marie was my favorite. What a loose cannon! The complexity and imagination reminded me of books like "Hyperion" and "The Reality Dysfunction." Good stuff! More please.
