Rollercoaster of terror

Porzig is great at throwing twists and turns and disturbing moments in along with humorous character quirks and jabs at groups such as news reporters and ghost hunters. This series is a non-stop thrill ride you won't want to put down. Stevens is a good narrator, and while almost too expressive, that's hardly anything to complain about with all the robotic drones of narrators out there. She is great at accents and languages and characterization. Overall, this is a brilliantly crafted series and I love that it's now all combined into one. A great read/listen for the Halloween season, or any time if you love creepy tales.

Keeps getting better!

In the third installment of the Darkness Unbound series, the author's voice and method of storytelling have improved even more, and the narrator's tones and characterizations have improved as well. While I was still taken out of the story by certain pronunciations (like "approociate" for appreciate), it's clear that Stevens reads ahead before recording, which is something all good narrators should do, lest they speak a character's line in the wrong voice. She handled this switching back and forth well, and again tackled accents with ease. I still appreciate her way of yelling without yelling, as well. Thanks for not deafening me. 😉

The characters in this third installment were, dare I say, even more fleshed out and memorable than in the other books, and I especially loved the fact that one of the characters was an author. It's fun when authors write about authors, because, even when they aren't the main character, I can see little pieces of the author in them - their dreams, their struggles, their accomplishments - and being an author myself, I can't help but relate to them. I also loved the return of a certain ghost hunting group (and the mention of PRS!) - and all the wonderful jabs that brings. These books are dark, but they certainly are not devoid of humor!

By the time I reached the end (with a smile on my face, thanks to a certain guest appearance or two), I was sad that it was over. But my smile returned when the preview for book 4 started. I was worried Porzig would stop at 3 books, but apparently the saga will continue. I can't wait to see what happens next. This series keeps getting better!

A heart-pounding step up

Once again Porzig wows with twists and turns and gut-wrenching violence in this second installment of Darkness Unbound. Stevens does a good job reading, maybe even better than last time, but I did find myself stifling laughter at her pronunciations of certain words. Nonetheless, she again does a good job of voicing the characters (although I thought one of them sounded a bit too similar to a certain demon -but hey, there are only so many voices one can make, and she has just about covered them all) - I really do love how she does that silent yell when a character yells. Gives the feeling of urgency without being deafening. Again there were some repeating words here and there, but overall I think Porzig stepped it up even more this time around, adding even more detail and action, and even a little humor. I was especially impressed with the final few scenes. The description of a certain character also matches the cover perfectly, which I loved. If you like scary, heart-pounding thrillers with some mystery thrown in, check this book out. Can't wait for the next one. Especially after that preview at the end ;)

An Intense Thrill Ride

Porzig has created a strong and believable cast of characters with Darkness Unbound: Lady In Black. It starts off a bit slow but then picks up the pace in a big way. For much of the story I thought I had the plot pegged, but then it surprised me. I had chills by the end, and wanted more. The narration by Stevens was at times too expressive (if that's possible) but she did a wonderful job of changing her voice to represent each speaker, tackling even accents and languages with ease. As a team, Porzig and Stevens sent chills down my spine on a few occasions. While there are some repeating words and phrases now and then, overall the story is good and held my attention, which can be hard to do. Recommended for anyone who wants an intense thrill ride with a touch of religion and horror.

Lighthearted and hopeful, with a needed message.

What made the experience of listening to Dying to Forget (The Station) (Volume 1) the most enjoyable?

I rarely find the time to read, so I thought I could listen instead, while working on novel illustrations. Turns out, I was right. Still took forever to get through it, but I got through it much quicker than I would have been able to by actually reading. Kimberly Woods speaks with a clear voice, enunciating every word; & with a soft & calming tone, making it a great read for right before bed (although that's not when I listened to it, but if I could I would). I think her voice embodied the character of Piper well, & she did a good job of keeping up with the humor in the novel, causing me to giggle on multiple occasions.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Dying to Forget (The Station) (Volume 1)?

"Fire... Fire! Fire! Fire!" - Perfectly acted out by the reader, and had me literally laughing out loud.

Have you listened to any of Kimberly Woods’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This was the first time I'd tried listening to an audio book, but after this, I will definitely be trying more audio books in the future. There were a few times when I wished I could speed it up a little because it went a bit too slow for me personally, but nonetheless, I could tell she really immersed herself in the story, which in turn made me feel more immersed in the story too.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I wasn't sure about dying to forget at first, but a few pages in I was crying. CRYING. Over a book. Because I relate to Piper. I have been there. Drugged & raped. & a cutter. & even suicidal. Thankfully that's all in the past now (I've healed a lot since then & even founded a support group called RISE (Rape Incest & Suicide Education) Definitely recommended for teens & for anyone who has been through any kind of abuse or trauma. You will cry, you will laugh, & you will find healing in its pages. This is why all books should be written - to uplift, encourage, & empower people.
