Plot Holes, Inconsistent Character Actions
Revisado: 10-09-22
Listened to the first book, meh. Listened to this, still meh. Glad I didn't spend credits on it. Definitely a, "if you've got nothing better to listen to" series. The author didn't take time to review the first book to make sure she didn't create plot holes or inconsistencies, and it shows. It even had inconsistencies within this books storyline. Too bad; the concept itself is interesting, the writing is not. The narrator is ok. Would probably be good at narrating children's books. The narrator's voice had me thinking this was a young adults book, but no, it isn't listed that way on Audible. Even if it was, I would tell young adults to look elsewhere for better writing.

Historia
From the provocative and hilarious EGOT winner, best-selling author, and host of The View, Whoopi Goldberg, comes the perfect antidote to all those outdated relationship advice books in the world, weighing in on why marriage isn't for everybody, and how the life you want shouldn't be the life everyone else expects you to have. Now, Whoopi will speak openly about why marriage isn't for everyone, how being alone can be satisfying, and how what's most important is understanding who you are and what makes you happy.

A Good Funny Listen
Revisado: 09-17-22
While common sense is often not common, this was a good book of practical advice for people trying to navigate the ins and outs of relationships. And she gave it with typical Whoopi comedy and flair. With the listen, even if all you want to do is get a good chuckle.

Historia
Two women develop a groundbreaking surgery: the Cesarean section. It's a highly dangerous procedure and the research is grueling, but even worse is the vitriolic response from men. Most don't trust the findings of women, and many can choose to deny their wives medical care. Already facing resistance on all sides, Nora is shaken when she meets a patient who will die without the surgery. If the procedure is successful, her work could change the world. But a failure could cost everything: precious lives, Nora's career, and the role women will be allowed to play in medicine.

Enjoyed the Series Tremendously
Revisado: 07-30-22
Borrowed the first book, "The Girl In His Shadow", from the library on a whim, was halfway through it when I decided I needed to hear the sequel as well. I enjoyed the way the narrator voiced the characters, even though they were not wildly different sounding, just inflections and dialects to differentiate them. To my untrained ear, the narrator spoke Italian well, making it enjoyable to listen to this book that mostly takes place in Italy. The author seemed to have researched the time period and medical techniques of the time well, giving authority to her descriptions. Definitely a good listen, but if medical phrases or descriptions of body parts makes you queasy, then this may not be the series for you.

Historia
"Call me Ishmael." Thus starts the greatest American novel. Melville said himself that he wanted to write "a mighty book about a mighty theme" and so he did. It is a story of one man's obsessive revenge-journey against the white whale, Moby-Dick, who injured him in an earlier meeting. Woven into the story of the last journey of The Pequod is a mesh of philosophy, rumination, religion, history, and a mass of information about whaling through the ages.

Hard to Keep With The Story
Revisado: 07-18-22
Struggled through this one. The narrator did a great job, and I'd listen to another book read by him. There were just too many rambling chapters between the actual story, making it hard for me to stay engaged. I found myself repeating chapters over and over because I'd zone out and miss what was being said.
I'm sure there are others who love this book and will recommend it, but I'm not one.

Revisado: 06-27-22
The story and the narration were superb. No one could have done a better job bringing back characters that she made loveable through TV. I'd listen to anything Alex Kingston narrated, she is clear, engaging, and makes you feel through her voice alone.
As to details about the story itself... Spoilers! 😉

Historia
Motherhood isn’t easy, especially when you’re a mother of a Black son. Ten years ago, Cheryl jumped at the chance to send her son, Javonte, to an exclusive boarding school in New England - far away from Atlanta and the violence of the city streets. It was the American dream, or was it? Now settled in Vermont, Javonte is married and well-employed, but Cheryl hardly ever sees him, and when she does, her own son seems like someone she only used to know.

Historia
Our brains do their best to help us out, but every so often they can be real assholes - having meltdowns, getting addicted to things, or shutting down completely at the worst possible moments. Your brain knows it's not good to do these things, but it can't help it sometimes - especially if it's obsessing about trauma it can't overcome. That's where this life-changing book comes in. With humor, patience, science, and lots of good-ole swearing, Dr. Faith explains what's going on in your skull, and talks you through the process of retraining your brain to respond appropriately....

Untuck this recording quality

Glad It Was A Freebie
Revisado: 04-27-22
As others have mentioned, the recording quality is bad. The first couple of chapters have interesting information, as long as you know that her use of the f word is prolific, in places where it's not needed, and just sounds awkward. I curse like a pirate navigating his ship through a hurricane, but this left me scratching my head asking, "what possessed you to use it there?"
it sounds like she's trying to talk as if she's the cool kid, but instead comes off as the really awkward, trying too hard kid. I found myself zoning out quite a lot and having to go listen to something else after only 10 minutes or so at a time. The thought of trying to listen to it after pauses actually made me feel anxious just trying to get through it.
Let's just say it's taken me almost 2 years to finish this. Wouldn't recommend to anyone.

In Manhattan, a young grad student gets off the train and realizes he doesn't remember who he is, where he's from, or even his own name. But he can sense the beating heart of the city, see its history, and feel its power. In the Bronx, a Lenape gallery director discovers strange graffiti scattered throughout the city, so beautiful and powerful it's as if the paint is literally calling to her. In Brooklyn, a politician and mother finds she can hear the songs of her city, pulsing to the beat of her Louboutin heels.

Another Brilliant Story By N.K. Jemisin
Revisado: 04-26-22
I was a bit skeptical about this book, but decided to give it a shot. I'm glad I did. It turned out to be so very good. N.K.'s ability to create interesting worlds and characters paired with the brilliance of Robin Miles as a narrator made this well worth the listen. Robin Miles is so very good at distinguishing character voices, that it's like listening to a full cast audiobook. Definitely on my must listen to again list!

Having never read "Ender's Game", I wanted to see if it lived up to the hype I had heard from family and friends. It did and then some. This version definitely makes me want to read the original book.
