Enjoyed the vivid story telling, evocative imagery, masterfully weaved plot, and timeless truths embedded therein. This book is a keeper.

The book is written with a latent naturalist, modernist, and irreligious bent, and author’s presuppositions and inclinations toward select scientific findings that support those presuppositions make it difficult to get through as a Christian, or person who believes in the inerrancy, infallibility, and inspiration of the scriptures.

The apparent inconsistencies between the archeological record and biblical writings seem to either stem from a biased selection of either with the authors tactic to “disrupt” and “amuse” perhaps even at the expense of truth.

Explicitly Roman Catholic, A string of Introductory Biographical Narratives

This string of biographical narratives seemed theologically light and gave what seemed to me a superficial treatment of successive church fathers in support of the Roman Catholic faith.

It seems this work would be most edifying to the devout catholic lay person who wishes to get "the lay of the land" before diving deeper into the church fathers.

I would not recommend for am evangelical or reformed seminarian except perhaps to see the church fathers from a catholic perspective.

All that being said, the author did paint a vivid picture of each father, allowing the reader to "put a face to the name," and perhaps laying a foundation for more in depth study.
