No saving grace in this memoir

I listened to hear her tales of working with Batali, Bourdain and her own story. Her pace in speaking is slow with little inflection. Written like essays which is fine; could have used more editing. Joan should have had her license taken away. She should have done better with her patient or referred her out to someone who could really help her. Sadly, I kept waiting for Laurie to have some sort of saving grace but that really never happened, which I am sure is true. Unfortunately, Laurie had so little growth over such a long time that negatively affected her son and husband, I had a hard time screwing up empathy for her. This was a difficult, depressing listen. I felt she had so little growth and remorse. Author may have been remorseful, but she didn’t write it that way. I cheered for her all the way, I kept hoping she would turn her life around, and in the end, she disappointed. Laurie, like all active addicts, are liars. She never convinced me she was no longer a liar. Learning about the underbelly of the restaurant/food world was fascinating. She is an excellent writer, seemingly a natural.

Passionate storytelling

Enjoyable and illuminating historical storytelling. The narrator is passionate about improving the acceptance of good mental health in Ireland and also remembering those who suffered terribly in asylums in the past. Thoughtfully written and performed.

SOOOOOOOOOO informative!

I am an American female born in 1967. That tells you everything you need to know about me and my exposure to diet culture and fat shaming. This audio was so well researched and gave me so much good information about GLP-1. I am starting shots this week. This should be required listening before anyone starts taking a GLP-1.

Milo’s owner is the most committed dog owner I’ve ever heard of.

I love a good dog story, and this isn’t one I’ve heard before. Anne is a very forgiving woman and determined, almost to a fault.

Interesting characters of a certain age

I am 57 years old, and this book included a character similar to me. The story made me look forward to getting even older, which is truly unusual.

A most interesting life

I’m left, as a Southern American, thinking that I.M. and myself grew up not only in different countries but on other planets. I understand the words but the life is completely foreign to me which is what makes the story so very interesting and captivating. He lists more friends and outings than anyone I’ve ever heard of and yet expresses such darkness and loneliness. He speaks of having children; he should not. He’s not cut out for it. This is not meant to be a negative view. I.M. is a genius and his life will be full, fuller, fullest without progeny. Great listen.

Such a fun listen!

I’m 56 years old and this was a funny, quick listen. Kaye Winslet does a wonderful job with narration and voices. There are quite a few eye winks for adults. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
