Historia
In 2014, Theranos founder and CEO Elizabeth Holmes was widely seen as the next Steve Jobs: a brilliant Stanford dropout whose startup “unicorn” promised to revolutionize the medical industry with its breakthrough device, which performed the whole range of laboratory tests from a single drop of blood. Backed by investors such as Larry Ellison and Tim Draper, Theranos sold shares in a fundraising round that valued the company at more than $9 billion, putting Holmes’s worth at an estimated $4.5 billion.

One of the best books I've read in a long time...
Revisado: 05-13-20
This book hooked me from the first chapter and I could not stop listening!! What an intense and intriguing story, masterfully written in such a way that even non-medical folks like myself could understand the ins and outs of the healthcare scandal that unfolded. Will Damron's measured yet dynamic narration gives the story depth and feeling. Seriously an amazing book.

Historia
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

Narration was not for me...
Revisado: 04-05-20
Honestly, the story seems great - but I can’t get over the narration and accents. The accents for characters put on by the narrator feel silly and cringe-y and over the top, and totally pull me out of the story. I’ll probably get this on Kindle so I can read the story without the audio, but this one is an exchange for me.

This book is ridiculous in the BEST way...
Revisado: 04-07-19
Absolutely loved this quirky, unusual book! The superficiality, cattiness, and chicness of working in the fashion world mixed with the gory details and twisted inner workings of a killer? Love it. The main character is so weird but pulls you in and by the end of the book you're basically on her side, cheering her on! Literally felt like I was reading "The Devil Wears Prada" mixed with "Sharp Objects." It's a refreshing change of pace in both the chick-lit and the thriller/suspense worlds, where the same plot lines are often recycled to death. If you like both chick-lit and thrillers, this is 100% for you.

It drove her colleague Lizzie mad, but she couldn't stop looking. They were never really friends - and yet Lizzie knew everything about her. Or did she? When chance and a terrible mistake pull Lizzie back into Becca's orbit years after they lost touch, she'll realise that you can't always believe what you see online...and that finding out the truth might be the worst thing you can do.

Not bad, but not great...
Revisado: 04-07-19
I'll say one thing for "Friends Like These" and that is the plot twist was unique for sure. This premise had a lot of potential but somehow, the storytelling fell short. The characters feel underdeveloped, and the storyline is clunky. I almost threw in the towel about a third of the way in based on the odd main character (she just makes really dumb decisions and you want to shake her) but kept listening to see what would happen. I'm glad I finished it, but I probably wouldn't recommend it unless you have absolutely nothing else to read in the thriller-suspense category.

Terrible Protagonist (and NOT in a good way)
Revisado: 03-08-19
From one chick-lit loving millennial to another, do yourself a favor and skip this book. The protagonist is seriously the WORST. And I don’t mean she’s understandably flawed and written in such a way that you’re meant to dislike her - I mean that she’s self-absorbed, dumb as a box of rocks, does irrational things and somehow she’s the heroine of the story. Other characters are ultra flat, lacking any buoyancy or interest. I had such high hopes for this book due to the unique plot but nope. The narrator was fine, but decent narration can’t save a terrible storyline. Ugh.

Twist and turns all over the place!
Revisado: 08-06-18
What a great read. I was expecting a light summery chick-lit book, but wow! A summer mystery, decadent and flowing and perfectly paced. I kept thinking that I’d figured out the plot but in reality, I’d had no idea what happened until the very last 30 min of the book - the sign of a well-written mystery. Excellent writing, excellent narration.

What a gem!
Revisado: 07-05-18
This book was a perfect little look into the ups and downs (mostly downs) of training for a marathon. The author’s dry and self-deprecating humor is perfectly paced and very relatable, and the narrator’s performance is really great - good timing on the jokes, great inflection. I bought this on a whim and am glad that I did so! Definitely worth a listen.

Meet Zoe and Greg Milton, a married couple who have let themselves go a bit. Zoe was a stunner in her college days, but the intervening decades have added five stone, and removed most of her self-esteem. Greg's rugby-playing days are well and truly behind him, thanks to countless pints of beer and chicken curry. When Elise, a radio DJ and Zoe's best friend, tells them about a new competition, it seems like the perfect opportunity to turn their lives around.

Hilarious and Unusual!
Revisado: 05-10-18
So...I never leave reviews, but "Fat Chance" totally deserves one. This book is hilarious, pure British humor. The writing is smooth, the premise is very unusual (which makes it stand out!) and the narrators are great. Definitely recommend this book to someone looking for 'elevated' light fiction. I've listened to it twice now!
