Historia
A particularly unpleasant murder - that of a very old woman in a housing project - rocks the town of Lafferton. The murderer has left a distinctive "sign" on the body and at the scene of crime. A couple of weeks later, a similar murder occurs, and a month or so later, so does another. Initial investigations discover that the mysterious "sign" left on the body was the calling card of a suspect who was charged with several murders in the northwest of the country, tried but acquitted on the grounds of insufficient evidence.

Starts slow but worth it
Revisado: 07-28-15
Great story after the initial few chapters which feel very random. It all works out to a rather predictable ending but the telling of the story is good and not so dark that you wonder who you are for reading/listening to it in the first place.

Historia
Oslo in November. The first snow of the season has fallen. A boy named Jonas wakes in the night to find his mother gone. Out his window, in the cold moonlight, he sees the snowman that inexplicably appeared in the yard earlier in the day. Around its neck is his mother’s pink scarf. Hole suspects a link between a menacing letter he’s received and the disappearance of Jonas’s mother - and of perhaps a dozen other women, all of whom went missing on the day of a first snowfall. As his investigation deepens, something else emerges: he is becoming a pawn....

Can't get enough of this series
Revisado: 02-10-15
I have become a huge fan of the Nordic mysteries/police thriller/dark action genre. And the Harry Hole series is by far the best. Why more of the series has not been translated and read for audible is beyond me. I have resorted to listening to the same books more than once. I would prefer to be listening to the yet to be translated books, so get with the program Audible!

lyrical mysterious mystery
Revisado: 12-21-12
I can not stop listening to Tana French's books. Each is a mystery, each is told from a detective's perspective, each has a twist to the ending. There the similarity ends. Each story weaves the listener into a world that I didn't want to leave. I had to listen to the books at almost one sitting/listening. I could not put the books down. Much of that also has to be the narrator's expertise. I am hesitant to buy the hardback books as gifts as for me the narrators did such excellent jobs. I rarely write reviews but Tana French and the narrators have won me over. Each is more excellent than the other. The Faithful Place is a heartbreaker but the "good" guys win in the end. That of course depends on who you consider a "good guy".

This is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man's search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend.

Simple, complex, subtile, wise. You will be missing a great treat and great performance if you let this one slip by.

"If Robert Littell didn't invent the American spy novel," says Tom Clancy, "he should have." In this spectacular Cold-War-as-Alice-in-Wonderland epic, Littell, "the American le Carre," takes us down the rabbit hole and into the labyrinthine world of espionage that has been the CIA for the last half-century. "Ostensibly a single novel, The Company can also be listened to as an anthology of cracking good spy stories," says ( Publishers Weekly).

The best of reads
Revisado: 06-13-11
Want to know about the beginnings of our intelligence agencies? Want a tight, taunt, well written espionage novel sprinkled with enough real facts, emotional underpinnings and understanding of the complexity of subjects to make a long read worth it? This is THE BOOK. Few books in my life are worth 5 stars. I have read thousands of books. This one gets it in my world.
Don't let the date of publication deter you. History is history. A great espionage novel a great espionage novel. Great novels are rare. Savor it.

Dissapointing yet I listened to the whole thing
Revisado: 06-12-11
This book is like cheap ice cream in the fridge. It's the only thing there. Too late, or too tiresome to get something else.
Trivial, pointless, good trap of characters designed to ensnare romantic women into listening or reading through a plane ride. The kind of book where you leave the book in the pocket in front of you, or some other suitable place, thankful for the diversion, disappointed that nothing was learned other than to not read/listen to another in series unless desperate, or totally depressed and don't want to think.
