Such a poignant and moving memoir. I’m at a loss for words, but grateful the author was not.

Historia
In 2005, when Lawrence Summers, then president of Harvard, asked why so few women, even today, achieve tenured positions in the hard sciences, Eileen Pollack set out to find the answer. A successful fiction writer, Pollack had grown up in the 1960s and '70s dreaming of a career as a theoretical astrophysicist. Denied the chance to take advanced courses in science and math, she nonetheless made her way to Yale.

Insightful for this woman in STEM
Revisado: 05-10-23
As a woman in a STEM field, I found this memoir insightful. I’ve often wondered “where did I go wrong”, when looking at how much more “successful” my male classmates and colleagues have been than I have. I never felt it was my potential - I graduated cum laude, I finished my professional exams albeit a bit slowly. I’ve wondered how is it a male acquaintance with C’s in college, who passed the credentialing exams even slower than I did, could be a vice president nohereas my A’s and B’s never got me above individual contributor status. I don’t think it’s the quality of my work, I have often been sought after by colleagues for my technical and technological skills, my abilities to problem solve….
Eileen’s work spoke to me. It resonated. I find it to be important and insightful - and as Eileen notes in her epilogue, if it’s so difficult for women to enter these fields, I can only imagine the obstacles for other minorities… and for those who identify as more than one minority.
I can only hope this country and these fields are more accommodating for those who follow me, like my niece.

I enjoy true crime in general, but this was particularly good! So many twists and turns and interesting aspects to the victim and the case. Five stars!

Historia
In 1999, Emmon Bodfish was murdered in his home in the wealthy enclave of Orinda, California, just east of San Francisco. For the young crime-scene analyst Paul Holes, it quickly became the most bizarre and surprising case of his storied career. It was immediately clear how Emmon had died: by being hit over the head with a heavy object. What wasn’t clear was who did it and why.

Historia
Shortly after 9.30 in the morning, a young man walks into Surf City, Bondi’s newest shopping complex. He’s wearing a dark grey hoodie - and a bomb around his neck. Just a few minutes later, he is locked in a shop on the upper floor. And trapped with him are four innocent bystanders. For police chaplain Paul Doherty, called to the scene by Senior Sergeant Boehm, it’s a story that will end as tragically as it began. For this is clearly no ordinary siege. The boy, known as Ali Khan, seems as frightened as his hostages and has yet to utter a single word.

Revisado: 07-08-22
I admit, for much of this book I wasn’t sure. At first I thought I knew how it’d pan out. Then it seemed I didn’t. Then it threw me for a loop. Then at the end of chapter 58, it captured my heart and crushed it.
<paraphrased>
What’s the point? He had spent his childhood trying to please a mother who hated him before he was born. Spent his adolescence paying for a crime that was just a moment of madness. Then he’d done everything he was told, only to be abandoned by his father and falsely accused of his brother’s murder. Then she came along and changed everything, only to change them back. He let the darkness in. He relaxed into it, he wouldn’t resist it anymore. All his life, he had tried to be good. He was done with that now.

Was tempted to give this 5 stars, gripping story and amazing narration - but landed up deducting one star as there were parts that felt disjointed… like wait, where are they, they’re outside now? Inside?

Historia
In this valuable and revealing anthology, cultural critic and best-selling author Roxane Gay collects original and previously published pieces that address what it means to live in a world where women have to measure the harassment, violence, and aggression they face, and where they are "routinely second-guessed, blown off, discredited, denigrated, besmirched, belittled, patronized, mocked, shamed, gaslit, insulted, bullied" for speaking out. Contributions include essays from established and up-and-coming writers, performers, and critics.

Wonderful
Revisado: 05-09-22
I highly recommend “Not that bad”. It was not as painful to listen to as I expected… it was sad, but also felt healing…. And obviously, important.
I’ve never been raped. I’ve been sexually assaulted (more than once) and I think any woman is a victim of “rape culture”, even if they don’t see or admit it. So having never been raped, have never been forced at gun point or knife point, my experiences were “not that bad”…. Yet, bad.
These essays pulled at heartstrings, and yet wrapped me in the warmth of community and understanding. Why should women be grateful we weren’t killed, it wasn’t worse than it was… why should we avoid wearing something sexy or walk at night out of fear and victim blaming?
I feel torn between buying a copy for every young woman (college, high school, middle school, grade school…) and wishing they’d never have to find out or know.
