A lot of the reviews give this book a hard time but honestly I think their problem is they were expecting something different and got mad when this wasn't it. This isn't a hard, sifi, reble with a cause, dystopian mystery, it's a slice of life piece set in space that doesn't prioritize straight cis-gendered people. Sometimes they use non-genderspecific pronouns when returning to people, its truly not that hard to understand. While it is firefly equse with a small crew on a long haul ship that cares for each other that's really where the similarity ends. There is an entire original universe and culture within this book and I don't get why some of the reviews are Big Mad. Of course there are legitimate criticisms to be made mainly with the voice acting. The actress herself is not unpleasant to listen to it's just that she tries to do accents for languages that dont actually exist and isnt the most consistent. Then, and this where the main problem is, there is the audio editing itself. It sounds like there were several takes of certain passages and the editor spliced them together without really trying to blend them at all so in the middle of a sentence the cadence will suddenly change and the emphasis is completely different. yall know the saying "you never notice the editing unless it's bad"? Honestly if you've ever seen a bad youtube jumpcut and are used to it you be fine. over all I liked thos book and will look for more of the series in the future :)

major spoilers ahead this is for folks like me who want to know if this will be a transphobic read or not. When reading the description it describes Luke as "a woman living as a man" but upon reading Luke does more that "live" as a man. Luke has been dressing, acting, and calling themselves a man since early adolescence. first out of necessity but by the time the story begins Luke activitly thinks of themself as a man and only realizes they are when confronted with their physical needs... This... isnt a "woman who lives as a man" this is a transgender man. I continued the book because I was very confused by what the author was saying: is bio gender what we are or can we identify as what we are most comfortable as living? When Nora discovers Luke is a Assigned Female At Birth she spends the rest of the narrative telling luke "it's okay you're a woman you dont have to be ashamed of it" which if you are trans like me will recognize as anti-trans terf rhetoric. it was enough to where I almost stopped listening but then luke is like "this is how I live most comfortably. this is who I am" and Nora stops saying stuff like that. in the end Like embraces their more feminine side while still presenting as a man but when with Nora will call themselves a woman. it's obvious that the author is trying to get both perspectives of someone who is trans just living their life but not the most healthy and someone who has never heard of such and thing and also is set in a time when terms like "transgender" and "gender identity" didnt exist. in the end I couldn't tell if the author is a well intentioned person who doesnt know all the bits and pieces they are talking about of it they're a term saying trans people are confused. the narrative doesn't berate Luke for living the life they which is nice but all in all I dont trust like that. Also the one part where there are Native Americans they are pretty much caricatures of "savage forest people" so that's just kinda racist. overall left me feeling confused and unsatisfied be cautious if you are trans.

I already knew a bit of trivia about the 1920s art and culture so coming into this book with that background knowledge I was delighted to listen. this book looks at the era of the roaring twenties with a lens that understands that with all the glitz and glam came atrocities committed against people who were not white straight ablebodied men. The author strikes a great balance between the hopeful ideals of a nation at the daennof a new era and the harsh reality of how it got there on the backs of people deemed "lesser". not to mention the exciting mystery and great interpersonal relationships that kept me thinking about every characters own story in the narrative. the voice work deserves it's own review entirely ms January said "oh I can just do every 20s accent I want huh" and ran. lots of great transatlantic gibberish that's just fun to listen to. I'll definitely be catching the next books in the Diviners series
