The Manipulator. I can manipulate the emotions of anyone who lets me. I will make you hurt, make you cry, make you laugh and sigh. But my words don't affect him. Especially not when I plead for him to leave. He's always there, watching and waiting. And I can never look away. Not when I want him to come closer. The Shadow. I didn't mean to fall in love. But now that I have, I can't stay away. I'm mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves. I'll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine. And once she is, I'll never let her go.

Really?
Revisado: 09-27-24
I picked this title based on great reviews. I am surprised. There is some story hidden between extremely graphic sexual content and even more disturbing abusiveness. I am not one who minds hearing detailed sexual encounters but am greatly opposed to someone attempting to turn sexual violence into romance.
I thought this was trash. If I'd have known, I'd of left it in the bin

Epic, but then again...was it?
Revisado: 07-11-24
There was so much substance to this book! In the end, it finally captured my heart and made me want to run back to the beginning and relive the early days of these characters...but no, wait...there is too much tragedy in each phase of their lives!
This is a fascinating story. Each time the author approaches horrific events, he jumps forward in time then you learn of the tragedy almost third-hand. Seems like an effort to downplay some of the horrific events that actually happen in the story. It's sort of brilliant because it leaves you guessing what direction the author is taking the story, but also a bit discombobulating. Once your mind catches up to the plot, the author has already launched the next big twist. Some of it is so subtle, you learn more from what is not said, than what is said. I see why other reviews say they feel like they need to read the story rather than listen; or that they want to listen again.
My great rating is for originality and because I feel the author wrapped the entire story together so well. Your questions all get answered. Well done!

Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice.

I loved this story. It has so many great threads of story line being woven right to left, up then down and viola...here we are tied up nice and tidy!
Masterfully written, it makes you feel you are living in the same time frame as the characters. The Authors note at the end is not to be missed. Great job! Thank you for the hours of entertainment!

The worst narrator ever. I had to force myself to finish this book. The entire storyline is so lame...almost no action. Whole story could be told in an hour. The dialogue between characters is so lame...very teeny bopper-ish. The narrator smacks her lips, swallows loud and pauses inappropriately. I was breaking out in an anxious sweat.

Historia
One sunny August afternoon, the residents of Cedar Close throw their annual summer barbecue. Children play in the cherry-tree lined street, tables are laden with food, and the wine is flowing. For Laurie Mills, it’s her first time meeting the neighbours. And it’s the first time she discovers her husband, Robert, is having an affair. Cedar Close has always been a nice place to live - a quiet suburban street where everyone looks out for one another and bad things don’t happen. Until late one evening, when Robert Mills is found dead in his bedroom.

A sad waste of time when there was so much potential.
Revisado: 03-19-24
This author has great potential to write a real story. I was definitely sucked in and was hoping for some intrigue, perhaps some sexual tension that gets worked through in a healthy way. But no. Once the story turned to sex, it was totally disgusting. I don't know if the author thought the audience would be more forgiving if she waits for the girl's 18th birthday, but it was all the more disappointing and disturbing that this little 18 year old is simply a sexual outlet for these three horn dogs. So sad because I thought the book was going a completely different direction when they celebrated her birthday.
I'm not sure I will finish the remaining six hours. I'm so disappointed that the father figure is as disgusting as the young male characters. What a horrible place for this young girl who has lived a disappointing life already.
The female narrator is great. The male narrator is horrible.
I can't figure out why this book got such high star reviews, obviously I didn't read the narrative reviews...I should have.

Ken Follet is still one of my favorite authors
Revisado: 10-23-23
But, I could barely stand the "sing-songy" rhythm of the narrator. It distracted me from the story and perpetually annoyed me.
I didn't feel as invested in the characters as I did earlier versions, but in his usual fashion Ken Follet is able to thread some realism into the storyline. I always enjoy that.
This is one book May may have enjoyed much more had I simply read it to myself. It's difficult to be such a big fan and submit such a poor review. Sorry

What an incredible story teller is Abraham Verghese! I happened upon his second book, "A Covenant of Water", first. I enjoyed it so much, I had to find another one of his and I'm here to tell you; it did not disappoint. The book is so entertaining, interesting and informative! I love his style of writing and of course the narrator was a perfect fit! I can't say enough, except to say, you must also read/listen to his other works. I know I shall be looking for more! Great job! Thank you for a delightful read!
