The Frozen River by Ariel Lawhorn is a compelling historical mystery that delves into the life of Martha Ballard, an 18th century midwife. The novel is set in Maine, 1789, and a man is found dead in the frozen Kennebec River. Martha Ballard's role as a midwife and healer, places her at the heart of the community's secrets and her diary becomes a key piece in the unraveling of the truth behind the alleged rape committed by two respected gentlemen, one of whom is now deceased.
Lawhorn's narrative is richly detailed, with vivid storytelling and multilayed characters. This novel is not only a mystery; but a tense and tender story of the injustice of women during early America. Martha Ballard is a woman who refuses to be silenced, making the Frozen River a must-read for anyone interested in women's history and early America. I listened on Audible and thoroughly enjoyed the narration by Jane Oppenheimer and Ariel Lawhorn.

Go As A River by Shelley Read is published by Spiegel & Grau. With a publication date of February 28, 2023, for this stunning debut novel, I give 5 stars. The story follows Victoria, a young woman growing up in the 1940s. In the small town of Iola. Inspired by true events, the novel explores love, loss, and the power of nature. The writing is beautiful and evocative. The characters are well-developed and memorable. This is a book well worth picking up and reading or in my case listening to. The audiobook is wonderfully narrated by Cynthia Ferrell with 9 hours and 58 minutes of listening time. At the same time, the print book is 320 pages long. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys coming-of-age, literary fiction reads.

When We Had Wings it is an historical fiction book ; but yet some parts of the read are truth. I had the pleasure of listening to Audible with narration by Saskia Maaleveld. In this read we have three authors that are writing about three World War II nurses who are stationed in the South Pacific. Each author wrote about untold stories of women during World War II. Meissner wrote the story of Penny, Lawhorn about Lita and McMorris wrote about Elaine. They were stationed / assigned to Manila in 1941. Penny is a US Army nurse, Eleanor is a US Army nurse and Lita of Filipina nurse. They are at a welcome meeting where the immediate sparks of friendship begin. We will read about how they made it through the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. Along with the horrors they would see and encounter with the Japanese and occupation of the Philippines. Nothing is more heartbreaking than the treatment of POWs and civilians during wartime. They are separated many times being placed at different hospitals and prison camps. These three think they will never see each other again. We will follow them as they cling to the hope of that meeting happening. These three females will suffer from tropical disease, mental and physical abuse along with becoming very malnourished. This read is so well written and the narrator tells the story magnificently that one can get caught up in the stories of all these women, as if one is right beside them. The Angels of Bataan are about women just like our nurses. I highly recommend you read this historical novel or the Audible version. You will walk away feeling you've learned a great deal about the unshakable strength of the human spirit and sisterhood.

I enjoyed listening to the "Nurses Secret ,"by Amanda Skenandone . The narration by Vanessa Johansson was very well done.

This book is based on the little known story of America's first nursing school of the 1880s, in New York's Bellevue Hospital. We are introduced to Una, who goes from a grifter to a nurse as our leading lady. Skenandone's writing style will have the reader thinking they are part of the story.

Uno would not have gotten past the interview at Bellevue if they knew her backstory of life on the streets. She is street smart along with being able to read and judge people on the turn of a dime. She can be an asset or your nightmare, whichever one she needs to be to survive.

Are Una's old habits hard to break? She realizes that if she's hired as a private duty nurse her street smarts can be of some use in the homes of the rich, or so she thought. Una didn't think about the development of a friendship or romance could change her plans. Uno begins to realize she actually loves nursing, helping her patients get better and that others would return the kindness to her and not expect anything in return.

This read was researched wonderfully and the writing reveals this. The reader will receive an education of 19th century life in New York, along with the development of many great wonders in medicine. it is easy to forget Una warning to solve the murder of her friend and of one's happening in the ghettos. Thus the ending will be of a surprise to you and you can only find it out by reading the Nurses Secret.

One thing the reader will realize is, like Uno we are all survivors. She helps us see that even when tragedy is part of our lives, it doesn't mean we are not to value ourselves or we are not worthy to others .

"The Unknown Beloved", by Angie Harmon is a book of tales of the 1930s in Cleveland during the depression and at the height of poverty and mobster rule. This tale is loosely based on real life T-man Michael Malone. This is an historical read and as you are reading the book you understand the thorough research that Harmon did to gain the insight into a dark chapter of our history. Not much is still known today about the men in the shadows like Elliot Ness, his T- Men teamer - like the elusive Michael Malone.
Harmon has touched on a great deal with her book The Unknown Beloved. She wants her readers to be able and talk about the unknown and the lovelessness of society that dies every day. We could all look at everyone through the eyes of her character Dani. Enjoy the read you'll never forget it.

In The Last Ship Home by Heather Webb the reader is transported back to 1902 on Ellis Island. Webb has so gracefully put in words so that one can imagine themselves among the immigrants and moving along the streets and subways of New York City. The reader will follow the lives of Francesca and Alma, you'll see how their friendship blossoms as they encounter sexual harassment, death and rape and of course the read is also heartwarming. The reader will enjoy the message that every story has more than one side. We can base our own life experiences with these two ladies. We all worry about how we are received by others. Most importantly it is that life isn't always black and white.
