Historia
Francis Ford Coppola is one of the great American dreamers, and his most magnificent dream is American Zoetrope, the production company he founded in San Francisco years before his gargantuan success, when he was only thirty. Through Zoetrope’s experimental, communal utopia, Coppola attempted to reimagine the entire pursuit of moviemaking. Now, more than fifty years later, despite myriad setbacks, the visionary filmmaker’s dream persists, most notably in the production of his decades-in-the-making film and the culmination of his utopian ideals, Megalopolis.

Great Book-Terrible Narration
Revisado: 02-02-24
This was a great profile on Francis Ford Coppola. I have read many books on him and I learned a lot of new material here.
The problem is the narrator has no idea how to pronounce most of the names associated with this. Sometimes pronouncing someone’s name differently in the same sentence, including the subject of the book. Really takes you out of it. Unfortunate.

Historia
The Missing JFK Assassination Film is not the typical JFK assassination book. This book does not attempt to answer the question of who killed John F. Kennedy; instead it addresses why we should question the actions of those involved and why the truth was withheld from the people. Though copies of Orville Nix's film exist, the original film is missing. Why? The FBI confiscated Orville's camera for several months, then returned it in pieces. Were these actions sinister, or were they just examples of governmental incompetence?

Pretty Much More of the Same
Revisado: 03-01-23
This is a conspiracy book, plain and simple. While the story of Orville Nix is a very interesting one, most of this is colored by the author’s very obvious biases. There are also some issues with some clear hindsight conversations that literally could not have happened when the author says they did. Example, the night of the assassination when they refer to Oswald saying he was a patsy. That hadn’t happened yet. If the author is wrong or misleading about little things, how do you trust the big things?
The author is definitely not a fan of LBJ, no question.
Chalking up everything that happened at any point that day to possible conspiracy is a bit much.
Interesting book but not to be taken too seriously.

You know the films. You know the characters. You may even know the man behind the glasses. But do you really know the events and happenings that most changed Harold Lloyd? That define him? The turning points in his life and career? From birth to death, Harold Lloyd grew and evolved because of the things that were happening around him, and he was always aware of the importance of these events.

Perfect Intro to Lloyd
Revisado: 02-22-23
Also good if you don’t know much. The author truly has a love of her subject, and the narration is excellent as well. After this book you come away feeling as if you truly knew Harold Lloyd and will want to rediscover his films, or seek them out to watch for the first time.

Historia
In 20 years of show business, Lucille Ball had only modest and sporadic success. Her TV program, I Love Lucy, was her last chance to fulfill the ambition that had sustained her through the frustrations of her professional life and the anguish of a failing marriage. The role of Lucy Ricardo revealed her true gifts, but it changed her life immeasurably. This definitive portrait of Lucille Ball is based on the recollections of fellow performers, her closest friends and family, and Lucille herself.

Good Book, Lackluster Delivery
Revisado: 12-08-22
I highly recommend this book. You really get to know Lucille Ball from the very beginning.
I would have liked a little more behind the scenes on certain aspects of the various television shows, but this is a minor quibble.
The narrator sounds like she is bored most of the time. Which makes moments where she wails or cries while describing something very jarring.

Danny Gallagher leads listeners up to that infamous day in October 1981 when Rick Monday of the Los Angeles Dodgers hit a home run off of Montreal Expos pitcher Steve Rogers in the ninth inning, giving the Dodgers a berth in the World Series. Listeners will be taken back to 1976 when a five-year plan for winning the National League championship was set in place by the Expos with the hiring of experienced manager Dick Williams.

Good history, terrible delivery
Revisado: 09-13-22
This was a good history of the 1981 Expos season and their playoff series with the eventual World Champion Dodgers. Ostensibly about the Rick Monday home run, the book climaxes a bit too early, with the playoff series ending about halfway through the book.
The problem is the narrator. I had read a review that mentioned mispronounced names. I figured I could get past it. I was wrong. If they couldn’t get a narrator that knew baseball or even had a cursory knowledge of the era he was narrating, then someone should have sat this guy down and taught him how to pronounce these names. I’m not talking about obscure players of the era. This narrator mispronounced (sometimes different ways in the same paragraph) the following names, among others: Willie Stargell, Mike Scioscia, Jerry Reuss, umpire Paul Runge, and scout Mel Didier. It’s very distracting and completely takes you out of the book.
One of the few books that I’ve listened to on Audible that I wish I read the book the old fashioned way instead.
