Historia
Generations of Montrose women—Augusta, Victoria, Willow—have lived together in their quaint two-story bungalow in California for years. They keep to themselves, never venture far from home, and their collection of tinctures and spells is an unspoken bond between them. But when seventeen-year-old Nickie Montrose brings home a boy for the first time, their quiet lives are thrown into disarray. For the other women have been withholding a secret from Nickie that will end her relationship before it’s even begun: the decades-old family curse that any person they fall in love with dies.

I loved how they tried to protect each other
Revisado: 06-23-24
The Black Candle Women spent their whole life protecting each other over something that may or may not have existed. Their inability to communicate almost destroyed them.

Historia
Real Americans begins on the precipice of Y2K in New York City, when twenty-two-year-old Lily Chen, an unpaid intern at a slick media company, meets Matthew. Matthew is everything Lily is not: easygoing and effortlessly attractive, a native East Coaster and, most notably, heir to a vast pharmaceutical empire. Lily couldn't be more different: flat-broke, raised in Tampa, the only child of scientists who fled Mao’s Cultural Revolution. Despite all this, Lily and Matthew fall in love.

More Time
Revisado: 05-22-24
This was a good listen. I got lost in the story once or twice and had to go back and re-listen. Outside of that it has a good storyline. In a nutshell, they needed more time to make decisions for themselves and for others. Time we do not have. It’s a good read/listen. I do recommend it.

A book EVERYONE should read
Revisado: 02-25-23
This book is a great “read“. (I listened to it.) I had to stop and cry, and and catch my breath as I would be holding it, The events as told through a child’s eyes are far more gripping and telling than from any adult.
I don’t know how to put what I feel into words.
I do know migrating to “La USA” should never be that hard nor that dangerous for anyone. I don’t know the answer to the question of how to change (for better or worse) the current state of the system. I do know it can’t continue in its current state.

Revisado: 06-07-22
Honestly, I was upset when I realized the change in the story. I got over it. I loved the complicated Finn and Diana. I loved the ending even more. It took me a “day/night” to finish this audiobook. I couldn’t put it down.
Enjoy!

Historia
Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening, her husband, Gabriel, returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face and then never speaks another word. Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety.

Historia
Isabel Allende reconstructs the painful reality of her own life in the wake of the tragic death of her daughter, Paula. Narrated with warmth, humor, exceptional candor, and wisdom, this remarkable memoir is as exuberant and as full of life as its creator. Allende bares her soul while sharing her thoughts on love, marriage, motherhood, spirituality and religion, infidelity, addiction, and memory - and recounts stories of the wildly eccentric, strong-minded, and eclectic tribe she gathers around her and lovingly embraces as a new kind of family.

She does not disappoint
Revisado: 06-01-22
I have loved Isabel Allende’s writings from the first time I read “House of Spirits” for my Latin American 101 class my first semester of college - eons ago - then “Portrait in Sepia”.
Life has finally slowed down and I’m catching up. I’m seriously behind. I have yet to read anything she writes not suspenseful, funny, sad, and leaving me wanting more.
She’s worth every second of your time, whether it be via audio or text. She’s a wonderful story teller.
I highly recommend anything she writes. You’ll not regret it.

Historia
In Chinese, the word for America, Mei Guo, translates directly to “beautiful country”. Yet when seven-year-old Qian arrives in New York City in 1994 full of curiosity, she is overwhelmed by crushing fear and scarcity. In China, Qian’s parents were professors; in America, her family is “illegal”, and it will require all the determination and small joys they can muster to survive. In Chinatown, Qian’s parents labor in sweatshops. Instead of laughing at her jokes, they fight constantly, taking out the stress of their new life on one another.

“Secrets…”
Revisado: 05-29-22
I cried, laughed, gasped and set dumbfounded by Qian’s recollection of her life in America.
While reading this book I was completely ashamed at the way Qian and her family were treated, legal or not. How ashamed we, as Americans should all be because people only come here for the American dream and we treat them less than dirt?! Something’s really wrong here.
I dare everyone to read, listen to it, what ever medium you use. Don’t listen as background noise. Really listen. Her recollection could be about the person you work with, eat lunch with, your children go to school with, etc. A kind smile would go a long way.
I chose the book because I loved the cover. The truth which is on its pages are heartbreaking, truthful, and eye opening.
I loved this book!
Thank you Qian Qian. Thank you.

Historia
When the 160 men of Charlie Company were drafted by the US Army in May 1966, they were part of the wave of conscription that would swell the American military to eighty thousand combat troops in Vietnam by the height of the war in 1968. In the spring of 1966 the war was still popular, and the draftees of Charlie Company saw their service as a rite of passage. But by December 1967, when the company returned home, only thirty men were not casualties.

I’m in awe
Revisado: 08-14-21
I’m in awe at how accurate this book is. As the daughter of a Vietnam vet, I can attest to the PTSD. My father passed it on to all of his children. We don’t do this. We don’t do that. We always make sure we are in a position to get out, etc, etc. The only difference, btwn my daddy and most vets, my daddy became a Pentacostal preacher. He talks about Vietnam now and then. I set and listen. This book Is like listening to my daddy. May God bless those who go to battle and return a changed man and woman.
