I’ve listened to this three times. The narration transports me to Coventry, puts me in the bookshops, drops me into France as a battleground witness.

Excellent! Stacey Glemboski is a favorite, and I listened to this set to honor her recent passing. Her voice for the old curmudgeon is pure gold. I highly recommend this impactful story and the telling of it.

Perfect narration, heartwarming story. Pretty amazing how a such short story can give you all the feels.

Started out laugh-out-loud funny then grew into a story with depth and heart. Jorjeana Marie does a stellar job in this role, even better than she did as Isadora. Alex Kydd is fantastic and reminds me of Andrew Eiden. Hope Alex does more work in this niche genre. He really brought Dallas’s character to life. Thanks to Courtney Walsh for a really great story.

I’m 20 hours in and am so disappointed in the lack of apocalypse. I loved the Edge of Collapse series and decided to try another apocalypse series by this same author. This one is 90% murder mystery/CSI. Not what I thought I was purchasing.

The authors use of obvious body functions is pointless. “She blinked” “He swallowed” “She frowned”. Worse, the narrator voiced the coughs, gulps, and little laughs. Very distracting. A sweet elderly lady I take care of would benefit from these descriptions but the general crowd doesn’t need them.

Some of Tessa Afshar's audiobooks are my favorites. I can't get past chapter 5 and regret purchasing this title because the narration is too distracting. The female sounds twice the age, and the male reads like a news anchor. Bread of Angels is so lovely...please bring her in for book two!

The plot is fabulous, the setting is comfy-cozy, and the narration deserves a standing ovation. Bravo!

More cons than pros

I liked that a sensitive topic (child assault) didn’t go into too much detail. However, enough detail that it will trigger some readers. Dee Henderson has done her crime research and delivers that part very well. This book is strictly about solving cold cases, so not as much action as you might prefer. The characters are never in danger, for example.

My biggest issue is the conversational dialogue. Everyone is parenting each other, and not just the parents (of adult children). Some advice is solicited, but the characters constantly advise as if no one can think for themselves. It’s constant, folks. Even worse, the narrator makes Ann sound like a grandma, and the boys’ mom like a great-grandma.

Gail Shalan's voices crack me up

I've listened to the whole series and am back for a second run. I hope the author uses Gail Shalan for all of her future work. She makes listening to the whiney main character a joy, and all the other ages/genders perfectly believable.

Of course, the best narrator is only as good as the writing. The author is witty, skilled, and creative. One of my favorites.
