Historia
The United States of 1797 faced enormous challenges. The father of the new nation, George Washington, left his vice president, John Adams, with relatively little guidance and impossible expectations to meet. Adams was confronted with intense partisan divides, debates over citizenship, fears of political violence, potential for foreign conflict with France and Britain, and a nation unsure that the presidency could even work without Washington at the helm. Making the Presidency is an exploration of the second US presidency, a period critical to the survival of the American republic.

Did not like author's butchering of pronunciation. Author did not spend much time applying the facts to her thesis that Adams was a groundbreaker

Historia
A work of extraordinary range and striking originality, The Gun, the Ship, and the Pen traces the global history of written constitutions from the 1750s to the 20th century, modifying accepted narratives and uncovering the close connections between the making of constitutions and the making of war. In the process, Linda Colley both reappraises famous constitutions and recovers those that have been marginalized but were central to the rise of a modern world.

Just Meh
Revisado: 12-05-21
While there were interesting sections here and there (Napoleon's contribution to Constitutions was surprising), there were little things I noticed that aggravated me
1. the use of the term "Constitutonal Technology" to describe the form of Constitution writing I found to be inapplicable to that process.
2. overuse of the word "capacious" and the term "long 1860s" I found aggravating. I researched the latter thinking maybe it was a term of art I did not know but found nothing.
3. Narrator calls Moscow "MosCow" then switches back to "MosCo" at the end.
Interesting enough to finish but not by much

I love wartime research books like this one and it did not disappoint. A variety of stories and characters make for a great experience. Tuxedo Park and 109 East Palace by Jennet Conant in a similar vein also highly recommended

Down and Out in Paris and London was Orwell’s first published full-length work and is a heartfelt insight into often forgotten members of our society. From the impoverished districts of Paris to the streets of London, Orwell recounts his experiences on the bottom rung in some of Paris’ most famous kitchens, his time on the streets of London with a colourful cast of characters, and offers biting social commentary on everything from accommodation and privilege to diet and language.

Orwellian take on poverty
Revisado: 05-05-21
It's bad. You learn it from his stories and his philosophies on how it can be combatted. The stories of life as a so-called tramp (homeless in today's world) and the degrading tales of working a menial job are heartbreaking at times. It is a testament to Orwell's genius that this book is still relevant nine decades after the events it describes. The narration is wonderful in the scope of accents performed. Any fan of Orwell's more renowned works should enjoy it.

Historia
In ancient Rome, all the best stories have one thing in common - murder. In one 50-year period, 26 emperors were murdered. But what did killing mean in a city where gladiators fought to the death to sate a crowd? In A Fatal Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Emma Southon examines a trove of real-life homicides from Roman history to explore Roman culture, including how perpetrator, victim, and the act itself were regarded by ordinary people. Inside ancient Rome’s darkly fascinating history, we see how the Romans viewed life and death and what it means to be human.

Brutally funny
Revisado: 04-25-21
Only a British author could lighten the mood of a litany of the myriad ways Romans killed each other.. Emma Southon uses a curse filled style to describe Roman's odd ideas about the taking of human life and the State's role in regulating it. This is full of gore in its graphic descriptions which I would consider it's only drawback. Get this only if you like dark humor and British slang

In the most ambitious one-volume American history in decades, award-winning historian Jill Lepore offers a magisterial account of the origins and rise of a divided nation. In riveting prose, These Truths tells the story of America, beginning in 1492, to ask whether the course of events has proven the nation's founding truths or belied them.

Beautifully written, inconsistently read
Revisado: 10-31-20
I am a great fan of Lepore's writing in the New Yorker as well as her New York Burning book. The pronunciation of sociology like it is spelled sosheology notwithstanding, Lepore's attempts to read quoted passages are wildly inconsistent and hard to listen to. Believe everyone who says the reading is bad and at 29 hours it can be a slog, but overall I recommend it. The writing is that good.

Historia
This book - the first comprehensive transatlantic history of the rise of neoliberal politics - presents a surprising answer. Based on archival research and interviews with leading participants in the movement, Masters of the Universe traces the ascendancy of neoliberalism from the academy of interwar Europe to supremacy under Reagan and Thatcher and in the decades since. Daniel Stedman Jones argues that there was nothing inevitable about the victory of free-market politics.

Dense piece of scholarship
Revisado: 04-14-20
An excellent summary of the development of neo-liberal thoughts and practices. Friedrich Hayek formulated the free market theories of political thought. Milton Friedman translated those thoughts into policies that formed the basis of Ronald Reagan's and Margaret Thatcher's ideas whose effects can still be felt today.
If any listener feels bogged down by some of the housing policy sections, skip to the last chapter for a riveting and incisive conclusion. Though boring in those sections, slog through them and you will be rewarded.

Historia
In the late nineteenth century, people were obsessed by one of the last unmapped areas of the globe: The North Pole. No one knew what existed beyond the fortress of ice rimming the northern oceans. On July 8, 1879, the USS Jeannette set sail from San Francisco to cheering crowds in the grip of "Arctic Fever." The ship sailed into uncharted seas, but soon was trapped in pack ice. Two years into the harrowing voyage, the hull was breached. Amid the rush of water and the shrieks of breaking wooden boards, the crew abandoned the ship.

Remarkable Adventure
Revisado: 03-12-20
You can tell from the title where this is going to go in terms of hardship for the crew of the USS Jeannette. I read some reviews before selecting this audio book about the excessive level of detail that the author provides and having finish this book I can understand that criticism.
I enjoyed the background of financier and notorious playboy and publisher James Gordon Bennett and of many of the crew. My criticism would be in the level of detail towards the end of the book when the crew is struggling to survive after they have had to abandon the ship. the descriptions of the injuries that the cruise sustain are hard to get through and I think could have been edited better.
in the end this is remarkable tale of survival and dedication among friends and crewmates.

Excellent
Revisado: 02-03-20
To read Sarah vowell write is a pleasure. To listen to her takes some getting used to as she speaks with a slight lisp. For me this was quickly overcome by the snarky beauty and hilarity of the prose.
I can't say I agree with some of the other voice actors speaking just a few lines in the middle of Sarah's narration, but as an overall experience it is wonderful. Casting Nick Offerman as George Washington was and ironic treat considering his role of the anti government local government official Ron in Parks and Recreation.
I am an avid reader of history and this really expanded my knowledge base.
