Expertly Narrated, Some Fantastic Stories
Revisado: 07-28-24
The narrator is far and away the highlight of this audiobook. He gives each character a unique voice, and the performance is just excellent.
The stories are mostly good. I greatly enjoyed the Night Lords one, and Rylanor getting some semblance of revenge was just…chefs kiss.
Do yourself (and the rest of us) a favor, get this book, then leave a review saying you want more of this narrator in the 40K audiobooks.

Historia
The planet of Caliban exists much as it has for thousands of years - the knightly orders protect the common people, fighting back the beasts that lurk in the depths of the seemingly endless forests. Young Zahariel and Nemiel aspire to join the greatest of the orders, led by the example of mighty Lion El'Jonson and his vision of a peaceful and unified world. But the coming of the Imperium brings new concerns and a new destiny for the Lion as part of the Great Crusade, and the sons of Caliban must decide if they will follow him to glory among the stars.

A Really Good Pre-Heresy Tale
Revisado: 10-11-23
While this book is part of the Horus Heresy series of novels, the events take place well before the start of the Heresy, though that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying this book.
Others have described the plot better than I could. It’s a story of Caliban, and several of the figures who would go on to become well known in Dark Angel lore in the times to come. Lion El’Johnson is at his rage-filled best, particularly later in the story. Zahariel, who’s point of view we follow throughout, provides us a good view of the closing days of the Great Hunt, when all of the great beasts of Caliban were hunted to extinction, as well as the coming of the Legion and the Emperor to Caliban to retrieve their lost Primarch.
The performance is very well done, particularly Lion El’Johnson’s voice. The tone and pacing kept me hooked, and I powered through this novel in nearly a single sitting.
Only taking away one point from the story because the ending felt rushed, and poorly explained, though as a Dark Angels novel, some secrets are to be expected I suppose.
While not my favorite book of the Heresy so far (Fulgrim holds that honor for the moment), it is easily #2 on my list.

“Do you know me?”
Revisado: 08-17-22
Grimaldus, Reclusiarch of the Black Templars, asked the Guardsmen that defended the walls of Helsreach on the first night of the war that question. But it’s a question that could have been asked of the reader of this book as well. We are introduced to Grimaldus here, and watch his rise from bitter, reluctant leader of a Black Templar crusade in defense of a doomed city, to the legend that he is in Warhammer lore. And what a journey it is.
The story is excellent, and I will not spoil it here. It must be experienced on its own. The characters are grim, as any in a Warhammer setting would be, but there are also moments of comedy, levity, and yes, even hope. Most of the named characters, and certainly the named Astartes, are given their moment to shine in the story. But make no mistake, this story isn’t for the squeamish. The descriptions of the combat between the Imperium and the xenos invaders are details and gory, so be warned going in.
The performance of the audiobook is also stellar. It took me a moment to get used to it, as the narrator, who I was till now unfamiliar with, was not a voice I expected for a book like this. But he gave an excellent performance, and I was hooked from beginning to end.
I cannot recommend this book enough to fans of Warhammer, the Black Templars, or just fans of dark and grim science fiction. Give it a try.

Excellent Book, Decent Performance
Revisado: 08-15-19
Red Rising is an excellent story. Yes, many elements of this book exist in other places as well, but here, they are blended and woven together into something new, and Pierce Brown has created what should be considered a masterpiece in the Science Fiction genre.
The performance is decent. The voices that the reader uses to portray the different characters are really my only issue with it; I get that it's necessary to differentiate speakers during dialogue heavy scenes, but in some cases, the voices were so similar it was still hard to distinguish who was speaking.
Definitely give this a listen. I can't recommend thos book enough.

Historia
The Roman Republic was one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of civilization. After its founding in 509 BCE, the Romans refused to allow a single leader to seize control of the state and grab absolute power. The Roman commitment to cooperative government and peaceful transfers of power was unmatched in the history of the ancient world. But by the year 133 BCE, the republican system was unable to cope with the vast empire Rome now ruled.

Educational and Entertaining
Revisado: 11-29-18
A lot of people can find history a chore...boring, dry, and tedious. Well, this book, and the audio performance by the author, are none of those things. The pacing is excellent. The material is far from boring. The audio book takes you through the history of the Roman republic, with all the bloody conflicts, civil wars, and mob activities described in detail. You'll get political history, and military history, which for the Romans were basically the same thing. If you have any interest in Roman history, the republic, its fall, and the rise of the Emperors, give this book a listen.
