Historia
Lucy Barton is a writer, but her ex-husband, William, remains a hard man to read. William, she confesses, has always been a mystery to me. Another mystery is why the two have remained connected after all these years. They just are. So Lucy is both surprised and not surprised when William asks her to join him on a trip to investigate a recently uncovered family secret—one of those secrets that rearrange everything we think we know about the people closest to us.

Dull story. So dull.
Revisado: 08-01-22
Stout’s words barely qualify as writing, her characters are barely alive on the page, the reader presents the main character in the most superficial manner, and the “Oh, William” refrain is particularly grating in the recorded version. It is more patronizing and ridiculous with each utterance.
Also grating: the self-referential writer (the main character) many times saying: “but I have written about that before and won’t say anything about it again.” As if promoting sales of earlier books.
Why do people love such anemic work? Strout’s popularity is a mystery to me. So many sentences are so worthless than one could think: did a computer write this based on a best-seller algorithm?

I couldn't imagine a better story to listen to or a better actor as a reader. Such quality in both areas. I was sad for it to end, and that has not been common in my Audible experience.

Historia
The story of Lady Chatterley and her love for her husband's gamekeeper outraged the sensibilities of Edwardian England. Lawrence had already been dismissed as a purveyor of the obscene for the attitudes to sex that he had shown in The Rainbow, which had been fiercely suppressed on its publication in 1915. Chatterley, written in several versions around 1928 in Italy in the final part of Lawrence's life, was a deliberate choice on the author's part to address sex head on.

I am not sure there could be a better reader than this great actor, and the writing – – it's DH Lawrence so it's brilliant.

such a terrible reader it's not even worth it
Revisado: 05-02-16
Don't let authors read their books. They are not actors. I have no idea if this is a good book because the read is so boring and thin and annoying. Writers should write and actors should act. To take the cheap way out and have a writer read his own book was a very bad decision. He could not be worse. Again, it might be a good book, but who wants to stick around and find out with a read like this

Historia
The story begins in 1962. On a rocky patch of the sun-drenched Italian coastline, a young innkeeper, chest-deep in daydreams, looks out over the incandescent waters of the Ligurian Sea and spies an apparition: a tall, thin woman, a vision in white, approaching him on a boat. She is an actress, he soon learns, an American starlet, and she is dying. And the story begins again today, half a world away, when an elderly Italian man shows up on a movie studio's back lot - searching for the mysterious woman he last saw at his hotel decades earlier.

So predictable. Listen to it at a fast speed
Revisado: 04-02-16
I found this book so predictable, so listening to it at a very fast speed certainly helped. If I had listened to it at the normal speed, my brain would've collected cobwebs.
