I thought for sure this was a book of poems written and read by Kendrick. Lesson learned.

Historia
Jessi Hempel was raised in a seemingly picture-perfect, middle-class American family. But the truth was far from perfect. Her father was constantly away from home, traveling for work, while her stay-at-home mother became increasingly lonely and erratic. Growing up, Jessi and her two siblings struggled to make sense of their family, their world, their changing bodies, and the emotional turmoil each was experiencing. And each, in their own way, was hiding their true self from the world.

Would have been a higher rating if they left the first two hours out.

The history of their parents seemed to have very little to do with the story.

Thank goodness for Audible’s speed control.
Revisado: 01-16-24
I was so grateful to be able to speed up the agonizingly slow narration. I would have much preferred a few more stories vs a handful of very long stories.

Michelle was in the death chamber as some of the United States' most notorious criminals, including serial killers, child murderers and rapists, spoke their last words on earth, while a cocktail of lethal drugs surged through their veins.

Could have done without the male narration. Otherwise a good book.
Revisado: 12-27-23
Why he had to say his name every time is changed from female to male is beyond me. We know who it was. And then I found myself tuning out of those parts.

Historia
The Arthur G. Dozier Boys School was a well-guarded secret in Florida for over a century, until reports of cruelty, abuse, and “mysterious” deaths shut the institution down in 2011. Established in 1900, the juvenile reform school accepted children as young as six years of age for crimes as harmless as truancy or trespassing. The boys sent there, many of whom were Black, were subject to brutal abuse, routinely hired out to local farmers by the school’s management as indentured labor, and died either at the school or attempting to escape its brutal conditions.

She was a good narrator but did not hold my attention. It seemed like she kept saying the same things over and over, just in different ways.

Historia
Susanna Kaysen takes on another taboo subject: her vagina—which suddenly and inexplicably starts to hurt. The Camera My Mother Gave Me takes us through Kaysen's often comic, sometimes surreal encounters with all kinds of doctors—internists, gynecologists, and "alternative health" experts—as well as with her boyfriend and her friends as she seeks a cure—but nothing works. As sex becomes more and more painful, Kaysen's relationship with her boyfriend disintegrates and she turns to her best friends, her wicked sense of humor, and her wry self-reflection to cope.

Somewhat interesting story but a couple of things that really turned me off.
Revisado: 07-12-23
The editor should have easily removed the word “said” at least 100 times. It was unnecessary and really made it sound like elementary writing. And hearing so much about the boyfriend - his unending needs and complete disregard for her situation - was pretty unbearable. Lastly, authors should not always be narrators. Very flat.

Historia
In a small, unnamed town in the American South, a church congregation arrives for a service and finds a figure asleep on a pew. The person is genderless and racially ambiguous and refuses to speak. One family takes in the strange visitor and nicknames them Pew. As the town spends the week preparing for a mysterious Forgiveness Festival, Pew is shuttled from one household to the next. The earnest and seemingly well-meaning townspeople see conflicting identities in Pew, and many confess their fears and secrets to them in one-sided conversations.

Great narration of a pointless book
Revisado: 10-12-22
This book started with a good premise and could have gone in so many directions, but it went absolutely nowhere. There was all this mystery and build up, followed by way too much conversation, that ended up being for no point at all. Thankfully it wasn't longer, because 6.5 hours was enough to lose on such a pointless book. Do not waste your time or money.
