Historia
We all feel it—the distraction, the loss of focus, the addictive focus on the wrong things for too long. We bump into the zombies on their phones in the street, and sometimes they’re us. We stare in pity at the four people at the table in the restaurant, all on their phones, and then we feel the buzz in our pocket. Something has changed utterly: for most of human history, the boundary between public and private has been clear, at least in theory. Now, as Chris Hayes writes, “With the help of a few tech firms, we basically tore it down in about a decade.”

Excellent in every way. Chris has done us all a great service, putting the internet and all forms of media into proper perspective. I’m old enough to remember the transition from Friedan calculators to computers, first at work, then at home and in hand. Brave new world that threatens to devour us! Never miss his show on MSNBC, and hope the in-studio Friday night versions can return sometime soon. Thanks for giving us this book. Loved it!

Historia
When, at age forty-six, Nancy Pelosi, mother of five, asked her youngest daughter if she should run for Congress, Alexandra Pelosi answered: “Mother, get a life!” And so Nancy did, and what a life it has been. In The Art of Power, Pelosi describes for the first time what it takes to make history—not only as the first woman to ascend to the most powerful legislative role in our nation, but to pass laws that would save lives and livelihoods, from the emergency rescue of the economy in 2008 to transforming health care.

A true profile in courage
Revisado: 08-30-24
Amazing life, amazing woman, and thank goodness she was in the right place at the right time. Narration was better than I expected, since in an interview setting on various media she always seems so guarded in her responses and speaks so carefully. But here, reading her own words, the story flowed effortlessly and I was entranced from beginning to end. Thank you, Nancy, for your courage to do the right thing….for the children.

Historia
Anthony Fauci is arguably the most famous–and most revered–doctor in the world today. His role guiding America sanely and calmly through Covid (and through the torrents of Trump) earned him the trust of millions during one of the most terrifying periods in modern American history, but this was only the most recent of the global epidemics in which Dr. Fauci played a major role. His crucial role in researching HIV and bringing AIDS into sympathetic public view and his leadership in navigating the Ebola, SARS, West Nile, and anthrax crises, make him truly an American hero.

An American Hero
Revisado: 07-26-24
As a physician-in-training who not only lived through the AIDS epidemic but experienced the loss of a family member and my kids’ gymnastics coach to this rotten disease, I was most interested in in the behind-the-scenes look at things I only learned from afar at the time. This book will serve as the most important look at the world of epidemiology and immunology probably ever written, and be read by students for years to come. What a lesson in perseverance and intestinal fortitude it is! With all my heart I am grateful to Dr. Fauci for his guidance through COVID and I am so glad he was in the right place at the right time when we needed him. I’m only sorry he didn’t have a President who understood science and cared about people and would listen to him as this epidemic began. He dealt with that topic with remarkable restraint. Thank you Dr. Fauci, and may you have a wonderful retirement teaching others by your example. Especially enjoyed how you spoke slowly and clearly so that the listener could follow the intricate details that most lay people would otherwise have a hard time understanding.

Historia
MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan isn’t one to avoid arguments. He relishes them as the lifeblood of democracy and the only surefire way to establish the truth. Arguments help us solve problems, uncover new ideas we might not have considered, and nudge our disagreements toward mutual understanding. A good argument, made in good faith, has intrinsic value—and can also simply be fun.

This is an audiobook to cherish, to give to those you love, and to listen to again and again. I plan to do all those things. I could simply not stop listening once I’d started it, and now I want to listen to it again. Filled with helpful examples, this book will benefit any person, since there’s not a one of us who doesn’t need to learn how to argue better. As an expert witness, I spend a lot of my time preparing reports and then trying to convince a jury I know what I’m talking about and that I’m right. I’ve gone to a number of conference sessions over the years on how do that better, but none so good as this. Thank you Mehdi. I cannot wait to see what your next adventure in bringing us the truth of a subject will be!

In the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election, Donald Trump and many around him, including certain other elected Republican officials, intentionally breached their oath to the Constitution: they ignored the rulings of dozens of courts, plotted to overturn a lawful election, and provoked a violent attack on our Capitol.

Liz could have titled this: “No job is worth sacrificing your honor for”
Revisado: 12-16-23
Riveting from the very beginning. Even though I knew much of what was in the book, having watched all the hearings, I still learned much. The audio clips are something you won’t get in the print version, and she used those effectively. Seeing the cowardice of so many Republicans who tell others privately what they won’t say aloud because they are fearful of retaliation from Trump or his misguided supporters reminds me of Benjamin Franklin’s words “We must all hang together or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.” That’s the problem with the Republicans. They aren’t banding together. Liz is no doubt anti-union, but it’s unions who’ve given workers the strength to succeed against powerful employers, Republicans who know in their hearts that Liz is right must band together and follow her courageous example and speak out before it’s too late. Thank you, Liz.

Historia
Ascending to the leadership role of US Attorney for the Southern District, which includes Manhattan and several counties to the north, is a capstone to any legal career: it entails guiding a team of the best lawyers in America in selecting and winning cases that often have global import. Geoffrey Berman was honored to be tapped for the job by Donald Trump in 2018. The manner in which Trump had dispatched his predecessor Preet Bharara was troubling, but the institution was fabled for its independence. Surely he could manage.

So much more than just a tell-all book of the Trump years
Revisado: 04-16-23
Besides answering so many questions I had about his appointment and later exit from the SDNY, this book takes us through a number of fascinating cases and issues his office dealt with during his term: Michael Cohen’s hush money case, the question that almost got put on the 2020 census, the Logan Act case against John Kerry that Trump called for on Twitter, sex trafficking, opioid kickback schemes, Jeffrey Epstein (was it really a suicide?), and Avenatti (just a crook after all?) - and so much more. We are very fortunate that in appointing this Republican, Trump actually DID hire the one of the “best” people. Excellent writing and narration. One of the best “reads” ever.

Just days after Raynor Winn learns that Moth, her husband of 32 years, is terminally ill, their house and farm are taken away, along with their livelihood. With nothing left and little time, they make the brave and impulsive decision to walk the 630 miles of the sea-swept South West Coast Path, from Somerset to Dorset, through Devon and Cornwall. Carrying only the essentials for survival on their backs, they live wild in the ancient, weathered landscape of cliffs, sea, and sky.

I’ll be walking bits of the Southwest Coastal path in Cornwall soon, so that’s what stirred my interest, but now I want to hear more from this talented writer about her and Moth’s further adventures. Read this in part on Kindle and listened in part on Audible which is a good way to do it to learn the pronunciation of the unfamiliar words. So much of her I can relate to — she seems like family!

Historia
In the years leading up to the election of Donald Trump, Congressman Adam Schiff had already been sounding the alarm over the resurgence of autocracy around the world, and the threat this posed to the United States. But as he led the probe into Donald Trump’s abuses of presidential power, Schiff came to the terrible conclusion that the principal threat to American democracy now came from within. In Midnight in Washington, Schiff argues that the Trump presidency has so weakened our institutions and compromised the Republican Party that the peril will last for years.

With leaders such as Schiff, there is still hope for our democracy
Revisado: 10-31-21
This is the first of the many informative books that have emerged following the Trump administration detailing its excesses and corruption that I have been able to get totally caught up in and finish in (for me) record time. His skill with the spoken word during impeachment trial, which caused me to drop what I was doing, sit down on the sofa, and just watch with awe, springs from his skill at writing - so apparent here. This is a book I wish every American could listen to, for Schiff makes a convincing case for why we all must become involved in this fight to save America from the politicians manipulated by 21st century robber barons who seek to end democracy to solidify their power and control to amass more and more wealth at the expense of the rest of us.
