Historia
When Robert D. Krebs joined the ranks of Southern Pacific Railroad in 1966, the industry had been in decline for decades, and the future of trains was in peril. Despite these obstacles, Krebs fell in love with the rugged, competitive business of railroads and was determined to overcome its resistance to change and put rail transportation back on track. Riding the Rails details Krebs' rise to a position of influence in the recovery of America's railroads and offers a unique insider's view into the boardrooms where executives and businessmen reimagined transportation in the US.

Business, Not Railroads
Revisado: 04-24-23
It is ironic that Mr. Krebs told the story of his first days working for the railroad as that of a young man who did not know what he was doing. I felt the same way throughout this book; at no point were the processes of assembling trains, switching cars, and dealing with line congestion explained in any meaningful way. What is “intermodal”? Was there a renaissance freight after he started in 1966, or a decay? The book is only for business-oriented readers, not for a railroad buff, not for the general public. Though the delivery was creditable, it has all the flavor of a retiree keeping you at a long lunch to tell you about his work history. I wish it had been wider in scope, but I turned it off about 85% of the way through.

Historia
Until about 1800, the West and the Islamic realm were like two adjacent, parallel universes, each assuming itself to be the center of the world while ignoring the other. As Europeans colonized the globe, the two world histories intersected and the Western narrative drove the other one under. The West hardly noticed, but the Islamic world found the encounter profoundly disrupting.

A Useful Perspective
Revisado: 03-07-22
This was a splendid and most useful perspective on the parallel histories of Islam and the industrialized west. History can be told from many standpoints; take any family vacation, and ask each member to write three paragraphs on how it went. Behold, there are multiple histories, each correct in its own viewpoint. In this book, we see the underlying causes rather than the inflamed headlines. Bravo!

Historia
The politics of the 1950s revolved around two primary leaders, one Republican and one Democrat both moderate, and both willing to compromise to move the nation forward. The Republican leader was President Dwight Eisenhower. His two administrations changed American politics. Ike’s desire to be president of all the people, to run his administration down the middle of the road, to be a modern” Republican, set the stage for what the Republican Party would be for decades to come.

Good Exposition, Hasty Editing
Revisado: 05-07-21
It’s really a good and worthwhile listen, shining a strong light on the Johnson Eisenhower relationship, and on Johnson’s misunderstanding of hell mistakes have changed in creating a portfolio on which to run for president. Some of the editing proves loose and hasty, and there are errors which do jar anybody who knows better. For example, Robert Taft is at one point said to have died in 1958, five years after he actually died. Richard Nixon is said to have been elected to the Senate in 1948 instead of the actual 1950. Mistakes like this cast doubt on the rest of the scholarship.
