Historia
Twelve-year-old Bird Gardner lives a quiet existence with his loving father, a former linguist who now shelves books in a university library. His mother, Margaret, a Chinese American poet, left without a trace when he was nine years old. He doesn’t know what happened to her—only that her books have been banned—and he resents that she cared more about her work than about him.

I couldn’t finish this book.
Revisado: 08-28-24
I don’t know what it was about this story but I just could not get invested in it. I kept trying to listen to it and I never really cared about the characters or what was happening. Maybe it was the delivery. I don’t know. I ALWAYS finish books but I gave up on this one.

Boring
Revisado: 08-01-23
I always finish books. However this story is so boring and I didn’t realize it was a Christian novel. I wish audible did a better job and making that known when you buy it. I can’t return this since I bought it at a discount but I definitely would have if I could. It’s like a summer hallmark movie - totally not for me.

It was ok
Revisado: 06-19-22
I think this book could have been more interesting and more descriptive. It wasn’t bad but I never found myself enthralled. It also felt reminiscent of other stories and/or the tv show Lost.

Historia
Reaching back to the Gilded Age, when that legacy first began to come undone, Alexandra has written an unflinching, mordantly funny account of neglect and class anxiety amid the ruins of a once prominent family. More than an insider's look at a decaying American institution, The Astor Orphan is the debut of a thrilling new voice able to render the secret pains and glories of childhood afresh.

It was just getting interesting and then the end..
Revisado: 06-18-21
I wanted to like this - it had an interesting premise, but for me, it just sort of ended when I was getting most interested in the main character. There was potential here but I wanted more.

Historia
By all appearances, Frank and Maggie share a happy, loving marriage. But for the past six months, they have not spoken. Not a sentence, not a single word. Maggie isn’t sure what, exactly, provoked Frank’s silence, though she has a few ideas. Day after day, they have eaten meals together and slept in the same bed in an increasingly uncomfortable silence that has become, for Maggie, deafening.

Not bad but not thrilling
Revisado: 11-10-20
I found it difficult to warm to the characters in this story. Particularly to Eleanor. The story wasn’t bad but I’m not sure I would choose to listen to this again.

Welcome to the most tumultuous summer of the 20th century. It's 1969, and for the Levin family, the times they are a-changing. Every year, the children have looked forward to spending the summer at their grandmother's historic home in downtown Nantucket. But like so much else in America, nothing is the same.

Story was just ok
Revisado: 08-20-19
The story was ok. But it wrapped up too quickly and was too perfect at the end. And some of the issues the characters were dealing with felt too much like the year 2019 than 1969. Not my favorite Hilderbrand book.

So-so. Would not recommend.
Revisado: 04-20-18
The story is ok. I’m glad I bought this at a special $1.95 rate because that’s really all it was worth.
One thing I particularly dislike about books that have email letters to be read is the need to read the date, the time, who it is from and who is receiving it. It is redundant and annoying to hear over and over again that the letter is from one of the girls and that it was sent pacific or east coast time. Definitely takes away from the enjoyment of the story no matter what book is being read.
The characters in this book do not have enough depth to be interesting. There are a few funny moments but generally their conversations felt vapid and self indulgent. Perhaps others will enjoy this story but generally I would say it isn’t worth the time.

So-so - hard to get into.
Revisado: 12-09-17
I think this book had a lot of potential and the characters were interesting but somehow I just never became all that invested in them. I found it to be pretty boring overall with a few parts that kept me going on. Narration was good I thought.
