Historia
Michael Freeman is a disabled veteran who had just been fired from his mind-numbing cubicle job, which allowed his opportunistic girlfriend to dump him. Now, he only wants to spend some time at his grandfather's mountain cabin so he can unwind, away from the drudgery of daily life and with a cold beer in his hands. Standing in his way is an ancient spaceship with an emotional AI, nanites that have invaded his body, an international crime syndicate, a suicidal FBI agent on a vigilante mission, terrorists . . . and that's just the beginning.

Historia
As the ash and chaos from Mount Rainier’s eruption swirled and finally settled, the story of the Greenloop massacre has passed unnoticed, unexamined...until now. The journals of resident Kate Holland, recovered from the town’s bloody wreckage, capture a tale too harrowing - and too earth-shattering in its implications - to be forgotten. In this audiobook, Max Brooks brings Kate’s extraordinary account to light for the first time, faithfully reproducing her words alongside his own extensive investigations into the massacre and the legendary beasts behind it.

great adventure
Revisado: 07-23-23
I listened to this series out of order, but it didn't seem to matter. Great novel. The narrator was also good. Would recommend to "creature feature" lovers.
I loved that the monster is on a mission, not stomping around in a rage just because.
Triggers: There is an attempted rape part that might be a trigger for some. The audible player has a 30-second function you could hit a couple of times to skip. But know the rapist gets what's coming to him.

more humor
Revisado: 05-09-23
This storyline kind of reminded me of that one Mission Impossible movie where everything kept going wrong for the team. I actually laughed at some of the dialogue, also.
Court isn't up to par as he has an injury that got infected. That scenario was accurately depicted as my ex-husband had a similar complication (the necessity for the regular administration of IV antibiotics due to an infection in the bone). It takes a while to get better.
It was confusing with so many names, and in turn, they sometimes had code names they were also referred to. In this, it's sometimes better to read a book rather than listen, but I still made it thru. I'll go back and listen again, so I'll probably get it straight. I've listened to the Gray Man series all the way through several times.
There were also so many bad guys this time and with their own agendas.
I'm glad Greaney abandoned the first person narrative he adopted in One Minute Out. That doesn't seem to work well with this type of character.
Snyder is an amazing narrator, and his accents seemed spot on. He also does great female voices without making them sound whiny or bitchy.
Excellent book. Excellent narration.

Revisado: 03-21-23
"she bit her lip" is repeated incessantly. I've actually groaned aloud because of the constant repetition.
There is a lot of world building in this book, and another reviewer pointed that out. However, I think that is necessary, especially in the first book of a series. There's less romance, which is actually kind of nice.
About the two narrators ... In my opinion, one narrator would probably have been better. The female MC had been depicted as kind of whiney, so the male narrator tones that petulance down while the female narrator adds more volume to the whine. If the female narrator could tone down the bratty sounding voice, I think I would have enjoyed having 2 narrators.
The narration speed IS a bit slow, so I speeded up the playback to 1.15, which really helped with that.
The world the author created is quite interesting. I especially like the beginning and how it was written. The listener/reader is immediately pulled into the story. The author could have started the book with the MC as a child or started off the book in the human world, but that would have made the beginning of the book a bit ponderous. Instead, we're introduced to two of characters at an important moment in their relationship, and the world building is gently weaved in in the aftermath.
At this point, I'm looking forward to the rest of the series

a bit formulaic
Revisado: 03-14-23
I enjoy so many of Julie Garwoods books, but this one was a bit meh for me. Near the end, there was the stereotypical misunderstanding that "breaks her heart". And she'll stand up to her warrior husband but not to a mean elderly woman? The heroine's personality seemed to be all over the place.
As for narration:
There were parts that should have been funny (which is one reason I love Garwood) but the narrator didn't have the sense of timing correct. Susan D. is much better at narrating. No offense to Heather Wilds, but her style of narrating has little inflection. Another reviewer mentioned that Wilds reads a battle scene and a love scene with the same lack of emotion. I thought, "Yes! What is up with that?" The narrator reads like she's in a dissociative fugue. It's kind of a bummer.
The beginning of this book held such promise too. The heroine was such an adorable nightmare of a child.

First heard on radio between 4 August 2014 and 9 November 2018, each episode of Home Front is set exactly 100 years before the broadcast date, and each follows one character’s day. Together they create a mosaic of experience from a wide cross section of society, mixing historical fact with enthralling fiction to explore how ordinary people coped with daily life in wartime Britain. We resume the story in Folkestone, where hospital staff face pressure to return wounded men to duty as conscription is introduced.

I'm enjoying this collection as much as I loved the first collection. I just wished they labelled each section by the date like they did for the first collection. It was easier to visualise the time of year, keep track of where I am, etc.

I like Ellis Peters and Mel Starr's medieval mysteries much better but I've blown through their novels quite a few times so I decided to give someone else a try. Priscilla Royal's are pretty good! I really enjoy the narration and the voices that were chosen for each character.
