In the waning days of the turbulent 1970s, in the wake of unsolved child-killings that have shocked Detroit, the lives of several residents are drawn together with tragic consequences. There is Hannah, wife of a prominent local businessman, who has begun an affair with a darkly charismatic stranger whose identity remains elusive; Mikey, a canny street hustler who finds himself on a chilling mission to rectify injustice; and the serial killer known as Babysitter, an enigmatic and terrifying figure at the periphery of elite Detroit.

Wanted to Like It More
Revisado: 08-29-23
I found myself in a love/hate relationship with this one. I enjoyed the plot of the story - it goes to some very dark places and examines some very fragile and unhappy characters...these parts were all very well-written. It took some time to get there. The opening of the novel was very stretched out and repetitive and the story starts out as something that doesn't seem to fit the book's description and then explodes into an exploration of depravity.
Giving it three stars overall because of the slow start and then what turned into a very slow ending. I also had a hard time with the protagonist, Hannah. Given her plight, I felt badly of the way I felt toward her, but after some reviews here, I saw that I wasn't alone. I think that my dislike of the main character stemmed not only from the way the character was written, but the way the narrator read her voice--which was very grating at times.
Overall, it was a good listen overall, but I wasn't bowled over, as I had anticipated I would be.

Historia
A decade ago, Emily Carlino vanished after her car broke down on a California highway. She was presumed to be one of serial killer Ronny Lee Jessup’s victims whose remains were never found. Writer David Thorne still hasn’t recovered from losing the love of his life, or from the guilt of not being there to save her. Then David meets Maddison Sutton, beguiling, playful, and keenly aware of all David has lost. But what really takes his breath away is that everything about Maddison, down to her kisses, is just like Emily.

Best Listen in Awhile! A+ Narration
Revisado: 11-14-22
I absolutely loved this one. Part Silence of the Lambs, part science fiction, part love story - at times I wondered how it was all going to come together and then it did in a very satisfying conclusion. I was worried approaching the ending, but Koontz pulls it off. If you're looking for a great listen with A+ narration, this is it! In all honesty, the narration definitely brought more life and layers to the story than if I had read it in print. Five stars for this one from me.

The new Bates Motel is a tourist attraction, a re-creation of the infamous murder site, and the developers are already counting their profits. But there’s a new exhibit that nobody expected: the bloody corpse of a teenage girl crumpled in the front hall, stabbed to death. Among the avalanche of press and publicity is reporter and true-crime book writer Amelia Haines, who is studying the original Psycho killings.

Better Than Psycho 2 but...
Revisado: 11-10-22
This one is better than Psycho 2 (which is completely terrible on all storytelling levels). Sadly, for many pieces of this one to make sense, you need to make it through Psycho 2. The story, however, is Psycho in name only. There's the house, there's Fairvale, there's some Bates thrown in for good measure. It's all wrapped in a nice little mystery but overall it just is. As a huge fan of the first Psycho novel and Hitchcock's film, I'm very curious why Bloch went in the direction that he did with the sequels to his most popular piece of writing. As he did wonderfully with Psycho and then pretty disastrously (in my opinion) with Psycho 2, he weakly relies on somewhat thin psychological commentary in order to help achieve the overall climax of his story.
On a positive: The narration on this one is great and the performance made the novel very listenable. So if you are into this genre and like a good small town murder mystery with great narration, add this one to your list.

Revisado: 10-25-22
Season One is not available, so I went straight into season two. While this is a horrific crime, I feel like there wasn't much information regarding the religious/demonic aspect that seemed to be substantiated. Some of the story details regarding the exorcism seemed vague. Some leaps taken. A bit referencing The Exorcist is thrown in for good measure.

When the police are called to an affluent home in the middle of the night, they learn a seemingly normal 14-year-old boy has attacked his family. The boy exhibits signs of demonic possession, and even more troublingly, he knows too much about the Sweet 16 killings. Father Jason Crowder, a young priest assigned to the case, must marshal his courage in order to save the boy and the entire city from the forces of evil. But this is a darkness mankind has never encountered before. It craves more than blood. And it won’t rest until it possesses Father Crowder’s soul.

Eh.
Revisado: 09-06-22
Based on the pretty stellar ratings that this title received (as well as the great and creepy artwork for the title), I expected a much better and more enjoyable supernatural horror experience. I stuck it out until the end because the run time was not that long and I was curious where the story was headed. At times, I felt like it was going to turn the corner, but it fell completely flat every time. Moments of characterization were lost by moments of gore that seemed to be over the top for the sake of being over the top. The storyline felt very contrived at times. Overall, it felt like (if you are a comic book fan) Marvel's Venom, but with a demon instead of a symbiote.

Historia
New York Times best-selling author Gavin Edwards, like the rest of us, has always been fascinated with Bill Murray - in particular the beloved actor's adventures offscreen, which rival his filmography for sheer entertainment value. Edwards traveled to the places where Murray has lived, worked, and partied, in search of the most outrageous and hilarious Bill Murray stories from the past four decades, many of which have never before been reported.

Returned This One
Revisado: 08-30-22
I'm sorry...I love Bill Murray as much as the next guy, but this one was just not good. I returned it before being able to complete it. Not only is the narration very difficult to listen to at times, the story is just flat. Stories of Joy, Enlightenment, and Party Crashing are just that: anecdotes of things that Bill Murray has done at various time in his life that...let's face it...no one else would get away with. There is no "tao" here - just bland story after bland story told by a narrator (the author) who sounds like he has a mouthful of wet cotton balls.

Historia
When Elizabeth Taylor was cast opposite Montgomery Clift in A Place in the Sun, he was already a movie idol, with a natural sensitivity that set him apart. At 17, Elizabeth was known for her ravishing beauty rather than her talent. Directors treated her like a glamorous prop. But Monty took her seriously, inspiring and encouraging her. In her words, "That's when I began to act". To Monty, she was "Bessie Mae", a name he coined for her earthy, private side. The press clamored for a wedding, convinced this was more than friendship. The truth was even more complex.

Wonderful Look at Two Hollywood Icons
Revisado: 08-30-22
I could not stop listening to this one and was sad that it had to end. It's a great look at these two Hollywood icons (both in their friendship and in their separate lives). It never became a biography filled with assumptions; it never became "trashy." If anything, it was a very honest and revealing look at Liz Taylor and Monty which discusses their triumphs and their tragedies. Highly recommended for Old Hollywood buffs.

In 1958 Jean Ellroy was murdered, her body dumped on a roadway in a seedy L.A. suburb. Her killer was never found, and the police dismissed her as a casualty of a cheap Saturday night. James Ellroy was ten when his mother died, and he spent the next thirty-six years running from her ghost and attempting to exorcize it through crime fiction. In 1994, Ellroy quit running. He went back to L.A., to find out the truth about his mother--and himself.

Very Dark Places
Revisado: 08-08-22
Great listen, especially if you love Ellroy. The inspiration behind a heavy pulp fiction writer. But it is VERY dark and cringe inducing at times. Heavy on the pulp, heavy on true crime, heavy on depravity.

Glad I Stuck Around...
Revisado: 03-06-22
It took me a bit to get into this one. During the first portion of the story which takes place at the casino, I struggled. For a short audiobook, it felt agonizingly long at the beginning. Thankfully that changed! The book definitely went places I didn't anticipate and as the story and the action picked up, I found that the narration also became better. Loved the last third of the novel and the ending. Ready to dig into the next Bond novel. Giving it three stars due to the rocky start I had with it...

The superhero comic books that Marvel Comics has published since 1961 are, as Douglas Wolk notes, the longest continuous, self-contained work of fiction ever created: over half a million pages to date, and still growing. The Marvel story is a gigantic mountain smack in the middle of contemporary culture. Thousands of writers and artists have contributed to it. Everyone recognizes its protagonists: Spider-Man, the Avengers, the X-Men. Eighteen of the hundred highest-grossing movies of all time are based on parts of it. Yet not even the people telling the story have read the whole thing.

I absolutely loved this book. What a great listen. The writer/narrator is truly passionate about comic books and all things Marvel. When it ended, I really wanted more. As a huge comic book fan myself, I loved getting lost in the Marvel story. This author needs a podcast to keep telling Marvel history as it unfolds.
