Historia
After years away from her family's homeland, and healing from an affair with an established director, stage actress Sonia Nasir returns to Palestine to visit her older sister Haneen. Though the siblings grew up spending summers at their family home in Haifa, Sonia hasn't been back since the second intifada and the deaths of her grandparents. While Haneen stayed and made a life commuting to Tel Aviv to teach at the university, Sonia remained in London to focus on her burgeoning acting career and now dissolute marriage.

So many gripping story lines!
Revisado: 08-27-23
I read The Parisian and loved it. Enter Ghost may be completely different, but the common themes of searching for self and national identity, the challenges of love and family run across both books. Sonja is a reflective and fascinating narrator whose honesty and reflexivity I could not get enough of. Gammas makes every scene come alive with detail so the story is a film running before our eyes. The turmoil of Palestine and the heartless occupation is the backdrop and the foreground.

Historia
Opal is a fiercely independent young woman pushing against the grain in her style and attitude, Afro-punk before that term existed. Coming of age in Detroit, she can’t imagine settling for a 9-to-5 job—despite her unusual looks, Opal believes she can be a star. So when the aspiring British singer/songwriter Neville Charles discovers her at a bar’s amateur night, she takes him up on his offer to make rock music together for the fledgling Rivington Records.

Dynamic story of music and poetic Justice
Revisado: 07-12-23
I really did think this was about two actual performers and tried to find them online. Learning that they were really fictional actually did not make it any less real. The author has captured several decades of culture and political thought in a delightfully fascinating story with twists and turns that are unpredictable. The characters are so vibrant, so well delineated that it is hard to put this book down ….and extremely well performed.

Gripping story with fascinating characters, and a great portrait of New York City
Revisado: 06-20-23
It was hard to stop reading or listening or accurately to this book the depth of character development of the two main characters kept me thinking when I wasn’t hearing the novel what would become of them. What would they decide to do next? I appreciated the riddle and paradox of gentrification and displacement of neighborhoods, especially low income neighborhoods of color as a backdrop, an anchor really for the story. A great read it will have you thinking about the story and stories, even after you finished the novel.

Took me a bit to get into the rhythm then fell in love.

Viramontes describes the sounds, smells my feelings, the fairy soul of each of your characters. It’s a reader you begin to inhabit their daily lives because of the incredible attention to detail that literally puts you in their shoes. It’s hard to read this wonderful book or hear it without being a changed person.

So appreciate the story that has deep political meaning and it’s told in such an interesting way. I appreciate all the character sketches and the humor and tragedy.
