Historia
It was four o'clock in the morning. A young woman pushed through the hospital doors. Staff would later say they thought the woman was a new mother, returning to her child - and in a way, she was. She walked into the nursery, where a baby girl lay sleeping. The infant didn't wake when the woman placed her gently in the shopping bag she had brought with her. There is CCTV footage of what happened next, and most Australians would have seen it, either on the internet or the news.

Unusual and slightly slow start, but let yourself be drawn in! Tears at the end. As others have said: hard to describe, but memorable! Great performances by both the male and female narrator.

Historia
In Argus, North Dakota, a collection of people revolve around a fraught wedding. Gary Geist, a terrified young man set to inherit two farms, is desperate to marry Kismet Poe, an impulsive, lapsed Goth who can't read her future but seems to resolve his. Hugo, a gentle red-haired, home-schooled giant, is also in love with Kismet. He’s determined to steal her and is eager to be a home wrecker. Kismet's mother, Crystal, hauls sugar beets for Gary's family, and on her nightly runs, tunes into the darkness of late-night radio, sees visions of guardian angels.

Oof. Far from her best.
Revisado: 11-23-24
I stuck through this based solely on my past enjoyment of her books, but this one was pretty underwhelming. The narrator's annoying voices for the teenaged characters didn't help, but really, the story itself was weak and disjointed. Some beautiful language and intriguing events, but it felt written by someone distracted, almost. Skip those one and check out her others!

Historia
Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission - and if he fails, humanity and the Earth itself will perish. Except that right now, he doesn't know that. He can't even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it. All he knows is that he's been asleep for a very, very long time. And he's just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

Awesome performance! Third listen over a few years.
Revisado: 03-20-24
I actually fell asleep watching The Martian movie, but somehow this story--which I imagine is very similar first-person, mostly introspective narractive, kept me engaged the whole time! I know some feel Ray Porter "over-acts" as a narrator, but this style suits him perfectly. I've listened to this more than once... love the Rocky/Grace and Grace/Strat dynamics. Highly recommended!

Ten-year-old Charlotte Bowen has been abducted, and if Luxford does not admit publicly to having fathered her, she will die.

FABULOUS narrator, reading smart mysteries full of characters built with so much heart (and even humour!)... what more could we want!? Incredible series... I laughed and cried in this one. Stay til the end for the full payoff. Excellent!

Historia
A body always tells a story - but this child’s was a blank page. Rita reached for the lantern. She trained its light on the child’s face. "Who are you?" she murmured, but the face said as little as the rest of her. It was impossible to tell whether, in life, these blunt and unfinished features had borne the imprint of prettiness, timid watchfulness, or sly mischief. If there had once been curiosity or placidity or impatience here, life had not had time to etch it into permanence. Only a very short time ago, the body and soul of this little girl had still been securely attached.

Historia
"Wuthering Heights" is Emily Brontë's only novel. It was first published in 1847 under the pseudonym Ellis Bell, and a posthumous second edition was edited by her sister Charlotte. The name of the novel comes from the Yorkshire manor on the moors on which the story centers (as an adjective, "wuthering" is a Yorkshire word referring to turbulent weather). The narrative tells the tale of the all-encompassing and passionate, yet thwarted, love between Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw.

Narration is fabulous, but story? Meh.
Revisado: 05-19-18
The prose itself is great; Bronte proves herself a master craftswoman. However, the subject matter is so dark, and the characters' lineage and plot so meandering that it doesn't make for an easy or particularly enjoyable listen. Paulson does a fabulous job with the voices. I'll look for more by her for sure.

Not my favourite Austen, but Stevenson could...
Revisado: 05-02-18
... read me the phonebook and I'd be spellbound. She brings such life and energy to Austen's works in particular that I can't help but feel Jane herself would be pleased. The consistent accents and vocal mannerisms make these large cast stories just brim with depth and fun. I'd actually started Mansfield Park with another reader and abandoned it before seeing Stevenson had read it. You might try another Austen for your first, but even moderate fans will be glad they downloaded this one.
