Historia
Through Maria's Eyes is the based on the true fascinating story of how one Jewish woman was able to survive and indeed triumph during the darkest days of the Hungarian Holocaust. Gizella Kornfield's world collapsed overnight when, one day in March, 1944, her beautiful European city was invaded by the Nazis whose sole purpose was to eradicate as many Jews as possible before the war ended. Gizella assumed a false Christian identity and obtained employment as a maid in the home of an anti-Semitic family.

Good true story, amateur narration
Revisado: 08-18-16
This is a son's BERNIE memoir of his mother's survival in hiding in Budapest during the war. It's personal, and therefore narrow. That's not bad, it's simply the style. A decent story, but could have benefited from a better narrator. Very stilted delivery but a rather pleasant voice. I'm anything but squeamish, but...
Revisado: 07-25-16
While the narrator did his best with this work, it is so grim, so gory, leaving nothing to the readers imagination, and I hope so unrealistic, though I'm sure there's some even worse out in the real world, this book left me bored, somewhat repulsed, and wondering how it got published in the first place. I don't feel it's smart to go into any more detail then the book description. If you're a fan of very explicit child sexual abuse, you just might find some redeeming factors. I'm very hard to make uncomfortable, but this book, I think, was a first. I was given this to evaluate free of charge by audiobookboom dot com

Historia
One cool April day, Mike Pritcher visits the home of his estranged wife, Lael, and takes their son, Ace, for an overnight outing. "She pushed her son's black-rimmed glasses up the slope of his thin nose. He jerked away like a puppy slipping its leash. A giggle, a crunch of gravel, a single wave of a grimy hand, and her only child was gone."

First Jack Olsen fiction for me didn't satisfy
Revisado: 07-15-16
I'm a fan of quality true crime and Jack Olsen fits that bill. I did not realize that this was fiction when I received it. It's not horrible, the female narrator is competent, but the story felt a bit forced and overly long (or perhaps I should say repetitious). If you're a fan of the true crime style, you might enjoy this. I found it competent, but not compelling.

Historia
Jesus of Nazareth has been dead for some 65 years. The eyewitnesses to this extraordinary life have died, often as martyrs, and only a scattered handful remain. Might anyone have resolved to interview those last few before it was too late, it being a matter of mind-boggling importance? What if someone had? Mysterium I: Rome presents the story of a young Roman scholar who determines to do precisely that.

Great premise, but the narrator ruined it for me
Revisado: 07-12-16
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
The subject matter was very interesting, so in that regard, yes, but I could not get past the very deep voice and slow narration. I did not finish the book.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
A different narrator.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
I couldn't focus on WHAT he was saying, only the timbre of his voice. Pleasant voice but not for this purpose.
Do you think Mysterium I: Rome needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
I cannot answer this because I did not finish it.
Any additional comments?
