Historia
Vernon Subutex was once the proprietor of Revolver, an infamous music shop in Paris, where his name was legend throughout Paris. By the 2000s, however, with the arrival of the internet and the decline in CD and vinyl sales, his shop is struggling, like so many others. When it closes, Subutex finds himself with nowhere to go and nothing to do.

Despentes is an amazing author
Revisado: 08-02-22
I'm not much for fiction, but I downloaded Vernon Subutex 1 because it was about a record store owner.
I've worked for over 30 years in the music business, and Despentes describes all the types of people that I've run into. In this case, they're French. Even if you don't care about obscure music and the people who love it, listen to this book. Ms. Despentes has been called a modern Emile Zola, they're right. Every character has their back story and thoughts described with insight and knowledge of human nature. I look forward to the English translation of Vernon #2 & #3.

Historia
From master historian William C. Davis, the definitive story of the Battle of New Orleans, the fight that decided the ultimate fate not only of the War of 1812 but the future course of the fledgling American republic. It was a battle that could not be won. Outnumbered farmers, merchants, backwoodsmen, smugglers, slaves, and Choctaw Indians, many of them unarmed, were up against the cream of the British army, professional soldiers who had defeated the great Napoleon and set Washington, DC, ablaze.

Mispronounced names and locations
Revisado: 06-02-22
I grew up in New Orleans with January 8th an annual holiday in my family. I loved the author's research into events before 1814-1815. I've read other books by the author and though they were sometimes bogged down with details, they were worth the effort.
Here's my complaint. The narrator (probably through no fault of his own) mispronounces so many names and locations, I could not bear to listen. I stopped the audio after 2 hours. I'll buy and read the book, but I won't go back to the audiobook.

Historia
The Roman Republic was one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of civilization. After its founding in 509 BCE, the Romans refused to allow a single leader to seize control of the state and grab absolute power. The Roman commitment to cooperative government and peaceful transfers of power was unmatched in the history of the ancient world. But by the year 133 BCE, the republican system was unable to cope with the vast empire Rome now ruled.

From the publishers that brought you A Game of Thrones comes the series that inspired George R.R. Martin’s epic work. France became a great nation under Philip the Fair - but it was a greatness achieved at the expense of her people, for his was a reign characterised by violence, the scandalous adulteries of his daughters-in-law, and the triumph of royal authority.

Revisado: 11-02-15
What other book might you compare Shakespeare's Tragedies to and why?
Harold Bloom: Shakespeare: The Invention of the Human. Brilliant insights into what Shakespeare means to us today.
Which character – as performed by Professor Clare R. Kinney – was your favorite?
Prof. Kinney effectively weaves dialogue from the plays throughout her lectures.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
In the final lecture about Shakespeare's last works, she was obviously touched by the plot of The Winter's Tale and the redemptive power of the spirit to move past tragedy.
Any additional comments?
I would have paid college tuition to attend this series of lectures. Don't miss it.

Southern Gothic
Revisado: 09-06-15
Is there anything you would change about this book?
The narration was a distraction, not a help to the story.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Fake southern accents. Shifting accents made it hard to distinguish the 5 major characters.

Historia
Shakespeare's seven great tragedies contain unmistakable elements that set them apart from any other plays ever written. In Romeo and Juliet, Shakespeare embodied in the character of Juliet the world's most impressive representation ever of a woman in love. With Julius Caesar, the great playwright produced a drama of astonishing and perpetual relevance.

The fictionalized account of Louisiana's colorful and notorious governor, Huey Pierce Long, All the King's Men follows the startling rise and fall of Willie Stark, a country lawyer in the Deep South of the 1930s. Beset by political enemies, Stark seeks aid from his right-hand man Jack Burden, who will bear witness to the cataclysmic unfolding of this very American tragedy.

Revisado: 11-16-09
There's a reason Robert Penn Warren was named Poet Laureate. This is the great American novel. As a Louisiana native, the story made a lasting impression on me. I'll never think about my home state again without remembering Willie Stark & Jack Burden. Top notch production and narration bring out the beauty and rhythm of the language.

A winner of the National Book Award, The Moviegoer established Walker Percy as an insightful and grimly humorous storyteller. It is the tale of Binx Bolling, a small-time stockbroker who lives quietly in suburban New Orleans, pursuing an interest in the movies, affairs with his secretaries, and living out his days. But soon he finds himself on a "search" for something more important, some spiritual truth to anchor him.

One of the best pieces of Southern literature.
Revisado: 09-18-09
Being from New Orleans, and Gentilly in particular, I must point out that Mr. Hurt mispronounced some local names. However, this didn't detract from his narration & the book itself. Listen to it & let it sink in.

Revisado: 09-18-09
Friedman, the brain behind STRATFOR, a private intelligence service, lays out the next century. This is geo-politics on a grand level. Russia waning, China in turmoil, Poland vs. Turkey, Japanese moon bases, and Mexico reclaiming Texas. It makes me look at today's headlines in a different fashion.
