Historia
The moment my husband showed me Cliffside - a sleek and modern glass home perched on the edge of the jagged Big Sur clifftops - I fell in love. And right there and then I made a pact with myself. I am never leaving this house. But when my husband was killed on the perilous roads leading up to the house, weeks after we moved in, I had a decision to make - leave the home I love and start a new life or stay and shut myself off from the world? I am never leaving this house.

Not my cup of tea.
Revisado: 09-09-23
This book was ok.
There were elements that reminded me of “Misery” and even a little nod to Edgar Allen Poe in some regards. I thought this was an interesting way to structure the suspense, though it was pretty exhausting and slow paced in the first three quarters of the book.
I liked the last 25% as the book finally reached the climax. But the fact that the protagonist is so obviously being drugged, and she didn’t realize it, is really frustrating. Many of the characters including herself, describes her as naive, and my goodness, yes she was. It was very frustrating.
I predicted quite a few of the surprises, but there were lots of twists and turns. Overall, not my cup of tea. It was slow and frustrating, and I didn’t care for any of the characters.
As an added note, did anyone else feel like the narrator switched between saying “Juan” and “Quan?” I got super annoyed at this. Perhaps trivial, but another aggravating detail.

Historia
Investigative journalist Laura Chambers is back in her tiny hometown of Hillsborough, North Carolina, the one place she swore never to return. Fired from The Boston Globe, her career in shambles, she reluctantly takes a job with the local paper. The work is simple, unimportant, and worst of all, boring - at least until a missing girl turns up dead, the body impeccably clean, dressed to be the picture of innocence. Years earlier, 10-year-old Patty Finch left home and never made it back. But for the people of Hillsborough, Patty was just the beginning.

Revisado: 03-30-21
I really enjoyed this book. I was not hopeful and it really surprised me. The author has a great voice and his choice of words is rarely, if at all cliché. I was impressed! Mysteries can really get predictable and trite, and I felt like this one was unique and kept you guessing!

I adore Ann Patchett, but this was not my favorite
Revisado: 11-06-20
The story was intriguing in some ways, though it offered very little “payoff” in terms of character development. While I appreciate the concept of switching the point of view on the three protagonists and getting inside each of their brains, I felt very unsatisfied by the end of the book. Perhaps that was Patchett’s intention, but I still didn’t like it. I felt the hurt from each character and how frustrating it was to continually receive the bare minimum from a mother figure.
As far as the narration, I HATED the music. I would imagine this is a remnant of the “book on tape” times of yore, but omg, it was so distracting and not pleasant to listen to.

Each page turn reveals impossible truths about the world, and January discovers a story increasingly entwined with her own.

Just can’t do it.
Revisado: 10-12-20
When I read the description, I thought it sounded like a great story and couldn’t wait to dive in. The title is also great. I couldn’t make it through the first quarter of the book because the writing is kind of pretentious and wordy. Too much telling, not enough showing. I’m sorry. I hate writing negative reviews. I just couldn’t do it. It was exhausting.

Not really my favorite.
Revisado: 06-05-20
I enjoyed the first book in the series, but this follow up was mediocre. I am sorry to say, because I would have liked to have liked it. The first book, while a little more “predictable,” had charisma and lots of fun details. In the second book, I didn’t really empathize with any of the characters or want to “root” for them. I understand that “second book syndrome” is a real thing and hope that book 3 will have more to sink my teeth into.

Pretentious and long-winded
Revisado: 12-30-19
I just was not a fan. I can’t believe I made it through the whole thing. I don’t normally leave bad reviews on principle. But lord. The production value was good in terms of narrators, and I’m thankful they separated each storyline with a different voice, but frankly, this book was EXHAUSTING.
Everything took a paragraph to describe what should have taken 10 words. Several times, I shouted to my car stereo, “OH MY GOSH! THIS FREAKING BOOK! Get ON with it!!”

A good “beach book” for sure
Revisado: 08-07-19
This is not just a fluffy book to mindlessly enjoy. It’s well written and it ties in some interesting historical storylines. It was a tad predictable, but overall very enjoyable. I loved the characters and was very hooked on each arch for each character. These kinds of stories always help me learn more about history than textbook summary- it’s always helpful to have characters to invest in to help understand historical context. This book certainly provides that.

Unexpected and lovely
Revisado: 07-17-19
I really enjoyed Animal Dreams and I feel it works in nicely with Kingsolver's oeuvre. I was impressed with both the subject-matter and the way in which the story unravels. I try to listen to all of Kingsolver's works because she almost exclusively does the narration, and I feel like in most instances, she truly captures the tone of her heroines. In this book, she explores grief and confusion in a unique way that I think a lot of women can relate to.

Historia
Beloved author Elizabeth Gilbert returns to fiction with a unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love. In 1940, nineteen-year-old Vivian Morris has just been kicked out of Vassar College, owing to her lackluster freshman-year performance.

Very consuming story
Revisado: 07-17-19
I found myself sitting in my car to hear the next bit of the story. I loved it and I could tell that Elizabeth Gilbert really enjoyed writing it. It took me a little bit to get used to the "long letter" format, but once I did, it was a great way to illustrate this woman's life. It came together nicely.
