Disappointing
Revisado: 12-31-06
This audio version of the movie "Morocco" omits the wonderful nightclub scenes. I enjoyed hearing the voices of Dietrich and Gable, but three advertisements for soap cut into the running time.

Dolls...red or black; capsules or tablets; washed down with vodka or swallowed straight. For Anne, Neely, and Jennifer, it doesn't matter, as long as the pill bottle is within easy reach.

Good reader, plot like a romance novel
Revisado: 02-06-06
This reader develops a distinct tone and accent for each character and has a pleasant, deep voice. For example, the lovely, doomed Jennifer North draws out the sweetest notes from the reader. But I didn't enjoy the book because the writing is thin and monotonous and the characters are stilted and unreal. The early parts about Broadway in the 1940s are interesting, but there's little otherwise to hold the reader's interest, except perhaps the explicit descriptions of sex, which might shock a 10-year-old. The most original thing about this book is the completely unhappy and depressing ending, another reason to skip it.

From John Updike to Sarah Orne Jewett to James Thurber, New England has been home and muse to many of America's finest writers. Stories of New England: Then and Now gathers 12 classic pieces that span the generations, painting a distinctive portrait of the last 2 centuries of the historic region and its people. In addition to Updike, Jewett, and Thurber, this one-of-a-kind collection includes short stories by Susan Glaspell, H.P. Lovecraft, Rebecca Cummings, Howard Frank Mosher, Rebecca Rule, Susan M. Dodd, Rowland E. Robinson, Mary Wilkins Freeman, and Lawrence Sargent Hall. All of these authors lend their unique talents and perspectives to this varied, ambitious compendium of great New England fiction.

I enjoyed this collection of stories by authors whom I knew (like John Updike and Sarah Orne Jewett) and others whom I was glad to discover. The readers, male and female, do a great job of personifying the main characters/narrators. You may not like every story, but there is a great variety: comedy, memoir, mystery, and two children's stories.
